Drinking water

Replaceable by rainwater

Harmer Kessel Rainwater Management Systems offer

supremely sustainable and economic solutions to the

re-use of rainwater for non-drinking applications.

Never Short of WaterThe high cost of providing purified drinkingwater is well known, but much of thewater used by homes and industry doesnot require such a high level of purity – eg,toilet flushing, clothes and car washing, and garden watering.

Natural rainwater can be collected, filtered and distributed for many uses, bringing major environmental andeconomic benefits – as well as addingvalue to a property.

Harmer Kessel Rainwater ManagementSystems will never leave youinconvenienced by a shortage of water.Sensors detect when storage tanks arenearly empty and refill with mains water. When a sufficient quantity of water hasbuilt up, the switch reverts to naturalrainwater mode.

Almost 50% of domestic water consumptioncan be replaced by using Harmer KesselRainwater Management Systems.

The System Choices

Garden Use

Harmer Kessel Rainwater ManagementSystems are a simple solution for there-use of water for outdoor cleaning, watering and bathing. Rainwater filteredand stored underground in an Aqabase®

tank can be automatically turned on atwill to provide all external water needs.

Domestic Use

The Aqabull® and Aqadive® RainwaterManagement Systems are designed forinstallation in single family or multi-family homes. Large applications – eg,blocks of flats and industrial buildings, can be handled using our twin pump unitsor custom designed systems.

Aqabull® pumping systems are installedat ground floor or basement, or in anoutdoor, protected enclosure.

Aqadive® pumping systems are installedat ground floor above the backwaterlevel, or, as with Aqabull®, in an outdoor, protected enclosure.

Effective, Economic, Sustainable

The principle is elegantly simple. Rainwater falling on a roof, is collected, filtered, stored

and distributed around a home or other types of building to fulfil a host of non-drinking

water uses - eg, bathing, wc flushing, car washing, clothes washing, garden watering, etc.

Rainwater falls on theroof and is collectedby the guttering andchannelled into therainwater downpipe.

The rainwater is divertedthrough a filter into anunderground rainwaterstorage tank.

A pumping unit controlsthe supply of storedwater. When anappliance or fitting isswitched on, this isdetected by a pressureswitch, which activates apump drawing water outof the storage tank towherever it is requiredfor use. When theappliance or fitting isswitched off the pumpceases operation after ashort delay.

An overflow pipe allowsexcess stored water toescape to a soakaway orsurface water drain.

Planning and Calculationsfor your SystemConsideration should be given to theinstallation of a rainwater managementsystem at the earliest possible time inthe design process.

Points to consider include:

What type of roof are you proposing –metal, flat, green?

How will this affect your watercollection – quantity, discolouration?

What is the water to be used for –gardens, wc flushing, clotheswashing, etc?

Where will storage tanks be situatedin relation to the collection points?

Where will the water storage facilitybe in relation to the appliances to besupplied?

Where will the pumping facilitiesbe housed?

What is the annual rainfall for thelocation of the planned building?*

What is the volume of surface watergenerated?**

Based on this information a rainwatermanagement system can be designedto maximise the use of freely availablerainwater and reduce the need for use ofmains drinking water.

The piping and cables for an Aqadive® or an Aqabull® unit are to be placed inside an emptypipe (DN 150) which is run with a continuous negative slope and in a frost free area fromthe Aqadive® or Aqabull® unit to the rainwater storage tank.

If this empty pipe enters the home or building below the backwater level it is important toprotect this entrance with a Harmer Kessel DN 150 backwater sealing pipe insert - Ref 85412(for Aqadive®), Ref 85413 (for Aqabull®).

Sample calculation

Single family house,roof area 170 m2.Run-off Coefficient = 1.0

Household with 4 inhabitants

Garden area: 300 m2 of which100 m2 will require watering

The collected rainwater will beused for toilet flushing, gardenwatering, clothes washing andhousehold/outdoor cleaning.

Step 1

Calculate the estimated yearly rainfall collection total.

Step 2

Calculate theannual service waterrequirement (seemethod opposite):

24 x 4 x 365 = 35,040

10 x 4 x 365 = 14,600

2 x4 x 365 = 2,920

plus

60 x 100 = 6,000

58,560 litres

Step 3

More rainwater is collected annually than is required (122,400 litres > 58,560 litres)

The calculated required storage volume is 3,369 litres (see formula opposite)

The optimal rainwater storage tank volume is a 4,500 litre tank

Formula

Horizontal collection area x roof runoff coefficient* x precipitation inlit/m2/year** x filter collection factor***

* See included table

** Consult local rainfall historical data

*** If maintained and cleaned properly the Harmer Kessel System 400 Rainwater Filtercan achieve a filter collection factor of 0.96

Total annual-service water 2 litres/year

The dimensions of rainwater storage tanks arelargely determined by two factors: The rainwater yield

(Rainwater collection area, loss factors and local rainfall figures)

The amount of service water required

(Type and number of consumption points)For economic reasons, a balance has to be struck between the amountof rainwater available and the amount of service water needed. Theavailable rainwater should be utilised and the amount of drinkingwater used to supplement it minimised.

When calculating the amount of rainwater available, use the annualrainfall figures in mm or litre/m2. Ask your local weather centre or consultthe Internet.

When downpipe filters and fine fluidised bed filters or inlet filters areused, the manufacturer’s instructions on the volume flow of rainwaterthat can be used should be followed.

The theoretically storable quantity of rainwater can be calculated asfollows:

The run-off coefficient is used to allow for losses due to the position, gradient, orientation and type of material of the collection surface.

Type of collection surface Run-off coefficient Ψ

Roof surface with a slope > 3 degrees 1.0

Roof surface with a slope <= 3 degrees 0.8

Gravel-covered roofs 0.5

Proven Project Track Record

St Pancras Station, LondonThe £800million extension andrefurbishment of St Pancras Stationdemanded the faithful restoration of SirGeorge Gilbert Scott’s neo-gothic facadesand detailing. English Heritage insistedthat replacement rainwater goods beperfect reflections of the original castiron work.

Alumasc met this challenge with ApexHeritage Cast Iron, making bespokemoulds to create replacementdownpipes, gutters and rainwater headsthat capture perfectly the authenticquality of the beautiful Victorianoriginals.

New Providence Wharf andOntario Tower, LondonA dramatic, futuristic addition toLondon’s skyline, this mixed-use urbanvillage of apartments, offices, retail andleisure spaces and hotel tower, isinterwoven with a complex of greenroofs, water features (including a canal)and podiums. To meet the technical andaesthetic demands of this diverseconstruction project, three premiumAlumasc products were used: ZinCobiodiverse and intensive green roofs,Hydrotech structural waterproofing andDerbigum waterproofing membrane.

Lancashire SchoolsAlumasc provided all the components and technological expertise needed toachieve the advanced waveform metalroof which gives this new sports hall (oneof three, serving schools in the area) itsdistinctive appearance. The dramaticcurvature has been quickly andeconomically achieved by using theArmaseam ‘zip-up’ aluminium roofingsystem (also available in copper, stainlesssteel or zinc) with Alumasc rainwatergoods and Skyline fascias and soffits.
