division champs '04, '10 e.l. champions 2010 ABOUT LAST NIGHT...: Though their opponent scored first for the 10th time in 13 games this season, the Curve snapped a seven-game skid in such contests by rallying early and hanging on late for a 4-3 series-opening Thursday night win over the Richmond Flying Squirrels. Richmond and Altoona traded runs in the first, and Quincy Latimore’s initial home run of the 2012 campaign gave the Curve the lead for good in the second. Altoona tacked on two more runs in the third on a double by Matt Curry in support of starter Brandon Cumpton (1-2). The righty picked up his first win at the Double-A level with six strong innings, scattering seven hits and allowing just two runs. Behind him, Vic Black and Duke Welker combined to pitch three innings of one-run ball with Welker earning his first save of the year. Adalberto Santos and Brock Holt each had three-hit days in the victory. CURVE/RICHMOND SERIES: Meeting for the second time in a week, the Curve will be looking to avenge a series loss to the Flying Squirrels at The Diamond in Richmond from April 19-22. This season, these two clubs will see each other a total of 21 times with 14 of those meetings coming in Altoona. The Curve lead the all-time series between the two 26-22. That mark includes a 15-8 record at Peoples Natural Gas Field. FOR ALTOONA: Right-hander Aaron Pribanic looks to continue Altoona’s good start at Peoples Natural Gas Field. After struggling with command to the tune of six walks in 3.1 innings during his season debut on April 9, Pribanic improved last week, issuing four free passes in five frames but surrendering just two runs on four hits while taking a loss at The Diamond in Richmond. The University of Nebraska product came to the Pirates’ organization as part of a seven-player 2009 deal that sent SS Jack Wilson and P Ian Snell to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for a package of five prospects. Last year, the big righty made 28 appearances (27 starts) for the Curve, going 10-9 with a 3.88 ERA. He fared especially well against the Flying Squirrels, boasting a 2-0 record and a 1.80 ERA in four starts versus Richmond. For more on Pribanic, see page two. FOR RICHMOND: Righty Justin Fitzgerald was on the top side of Pribanic’s loss last week in Richmond. The UC-Davis alum is in his second season with the Squirrels, coming off an Eastern League All-Star honor last year and a California League All-Star nod in 2010. Like Pribanic, whose grandfather Jim Coates pitched for nine seasons and four teams in the big leagues, Fitzgerald comes from a baseball background. His own grandfather, John, played in the Pirates and Cardinals organizations. Last year, the Northern California native went 9-9 with a 3.51 ERA in 27 starts for the Flying Squirrels. The right-hander didn’t fare quite so well against the Curve, going 1-2 with a 5.27 mark in five starts against Altoona. BIG TIME: Pittsburgh Pirates right hander A.J. Burnett will make a rehabilitation start with the Altoona Curve on Satur- day at Peoples Natural Gas Field when the Curve take on the Richmond Flying Squirrels at 6 p.m. This will be the fourth rehabilitation assignment for Burnett, who is suffering from a right orbital bone fracture that he sustained during a bunting drill in Spring Training. His other three rehab starts came in Indianapolis and in Bradenton (two starts). In his career, the right hander owns a record of 121-111 in 300+ Major League starts. RISP-Y BUSINESS: Over the road trip and continuing Thursday, the Curve have had their issues with runners in scoring position. With another six men left on the basepaths in the series opener of four with Richmond, the Curve have now stranded 44 batters over their last six games in 54 innings at the dish. Last night’s 1-for-11 line with RISP made the last six contests a 7-for-54 streak (.130) for Altoona. Thankfully for the Curve, though, Richmond was one AB worse on Thursday in an eventual one-run final, going 1-for-12 in high-leverage situations. THREE’S COMPANY: On a night when the Curve were actually outhit in a winning effort, two Altoona players quietly engineered a solid night at the plate for their club. Shortstop Brock Holt continued his hot start to the season, lifting his average to .326 with a 3-for-4 evening that included a double. Outfielder Adalberto Santos pushed his average to a blistering .391 with three hits and a double of his own. Santos added a run scored. TOUGH GLOVE: The Curve’s early-season defensive struggles reared their heads again on Wednesday night in Har- risburg. Altoona committed three more errors, putting their season-long total at 18, third-most in the league. After an errorless Thursday for Altoona, New Hampshire (23) and Portland (20) remain the only two sides with more miscues in the field. QUALITY: RHP Brandon Cumpton turned in another quality start on Thurs- day night in the defeat of the Squirrels at Peoples Natural Gas Field. Over his last two starts (both quality starts), Cumpton is a combined 1-1 with a 2.08 ERA (3 ER in 13.0 IP) to go along with seven strikeouts and two walks. HOME COOKING: With their nine hits on Thursday night, the Curve are now batting .271 in the confines of Peoples Natural Gas Field through six games. In their seven games on the most recent road trip, the Curve batted .224. Brock Holt, in particular, has hit the ball much better here at home with a .450 clip compared to a .250 mark on the road. GOOD START: After being promoted to Triple-A yesterday, former Curve RHP Tim Alderson tossed 3.0 scoreless innings for the Indy Indians in their game on Thursday morning. It was Alderson’s first appearance above the Double-A level.
