The Wiltshire Rural Housing Association is committed to developing sustainable, new and refurbished, affordable rental properties in Wiltshire. The innovative and energy efficient Daikin Altherma air-to-water heat pump was specified to supply central heating and hot water services in a new WRHA development of 10 two bedroom homes in Codford, Wiltshire. The installation, completed in December 2007, satisfies local planning authority requirements regarding the incorporation of low to zero carbon renewable technologies.

Reason for selecting Daikin Altherma:

With no mains gas available and other options considered environmentally undesirable by WRHA and the

local planning authorities, Daikin Altherma, manufactured by Daikin Europe N.V and supplied by Space

Air has been successfully applied in other Wiltshire developments. The WRHA were satisfied that Daikin

Altherma met their sustainable housing objectives, reduced construction costs associated with conventional

fossil fuel systems, and offered considerably lower user operating costs and carbon footprint than the

available alternatives.

This substantial, classic Surrey home on a private, gated estate near Guildford suffered from poor insulation, original single glazed windows and an oversized, inefficient gas boiler. The owner chose to replace the boiler with an energy efficient, environmentally friendly alternative and selected the Space Air Daikin Altherma having had previous knowledge of Daikins quality products. The owner has established in a short winter period that his energy bills have greatly reduced and has since replaced his gas fired swimming pool heating system with an Daikin Altherma ‘packaged’ unit, also supplied by Space Air.

Mulberry Lea is an attractive development of 36 homes in Upwell, Norfolk designed and built by James Development Company Ltd.The site, recently completed, includes detached 3,4,5 and 6 bedroom luxury properties and a terrace of 2 bedroom social housing. Each property features the Daikin Altherma air-to-water heat pump, manufactured by Daikin and supplied by Space Air. One property also includes Daikin comfort cooling, also supplied by Space Air.

The owners of this very large barn conversion in Hertfordshire selected multiple Daikin Altherma systems to serve underfloor heating and hot water storage. The conversion incorporates many state of the art and innovative features including Daikin Altherma which has been unobtrusively installed making use of adjacent outbuildings.

Space Air launched Daikin Altherma in the Channel Islands in 2007, it immediately attracted the attention of several developers and private householders as the dominant alternative systems are bulky and expensive oil or LPG fired systems or direct electric heating. Additionally the Channel Islands offer reduced electricity tariffs for heat pump installations. This private residence was one of the first in Jersey to have an Daikin Altherma installation.

The Daikin Altherma system can satisfy your heating requirements on its own or working in conjunction with your existing system, should you wish to retain it. The owners of this stone built semi-detached property in Fife wanted to keep their 5.5kW wood burning stove as a back up system, but replace an existing Gas-fired boiler with the Daikin Altherma to handle the main heating and hot water demand. Retaining the installed radiators reduced the system costs.

This is another stone built cottage in Fife, Scotland which featured a 9Kw wood burning stove and an oil-fired central heating boiler. The owners decided to replace the oil-fired system as this was costly to run and maintain. It was not necessary to replace the existing radiators, so the installation costs were minimised.

Daikin Altherma offered a seasonal energy efficiency more than 21/2 times better than the existing oil-fired

Space Air first launched the Daikin Altherma system at the Ecobuild show in 2005 and exhibited the Daikin Altherma system, manufactured by Daikin Europe, the following year at the Ideal Home Show. A local Builder from the Shetland Islands visited both shows, where he was able to see the system in full operation and speak to Space Air directly about the after sales and technical support that could be provided. This convinced him that the Daikin Altherma system, supplied by Space Air, was the best solution to operate his own home underfloor heating.

Electricity is the most commonly used fuel on the Shetland Islands. Daikin Altherma is a low energy

consumption inverter controlled heat pump system, ideally suited to this new build application. As Daikin

Altherma does not involve combustion there is no need to include flues or ventilation saving on the overall

build costs. Refrigerant pipework connects the outdoor heat absorber unit and the indoor hydrobox boiler

which does involve special skills, otherwise Daikin Altherma simply plumbs into the wet central heating

system in the same way as with boilers.

The Daikin Altherma heat pump system has been supplied by Space Air for all the heating and hot water for the newly built high quality Care Village ‘ Nursing Homes’ in Brampton, Daventry. Built in 2008 they consist of 21 flats, and 14 bungalows for the elderly. The Altherma system connects to LST (low service temperature) radiators through-out and the domestic hot water tank. In addition to the Altherma system each bungalow has the Daikin Heat Recovery Ventilation unit installed.

The 4 bedroom homes conceal the Altherma system by positioning the hot water storage cylinder with expansion vessel in the airing cupboard, the indoor hydrobox boiler has been placed in the utility room with casing around all pipe work. The outdoor units for each home has been placed at the side of the properties, hidden in an architecturally designed wooden enclosure.

The two detached 247sqm 4 bedroom / 2 bathroom family homes, incorporates under-floor heating through-out - heated by the Daikin Altherma ‘classic’ split system.

The Daikin Altherma system ensures maximum reduction in running cost and dramatically reduces carbon emissions, for potential home owners, due to the low temperatures that are required.

The 11kW outdoor unit has been positioned to the side of the home and connects to the indoor ‘Hydrobox’ unit and 300l hot water storage cylinder which has been situated at the back of the homes garage. This meant minimal disruption to the build and will make future maintenance and servicing simple and quick.

The indoor units and storage cylinders have been placed in the apartments’ airing cupboards. There was enough space around the indoor units and cylinders to install washing machines and shelving. The outdoor units have been positioned on the roof, with easy access for the annual maintenance check.

Due to the number of apartments, 55 in total, the foot-print area on the roof was far too small for the quantity of solar panels that would be needed to satisfy the renewable target.The Local Authority and their Energy Assessor advised that they would need to equip some of the apartments with air to water heat pumps, (due to efficiencies, flexibility and space limitations). The developers specified Space Air to supply the ‘complete’ Daikin Altherma heat pump system for 8 of the apartments.

The Space Air Daikin Altherma system has been installed in a number of housing applications in and around

the Wiltshire area. The system, due to it’s flexibility blended into the new build homes unobtrusively.



The Government, through the Technology Strategy Board (TSB), allocated £17million to find innovative ways of reducing carbon emissions and provide exemplar energy efficient measures in the UK social housing sector. Sarsen Housing was awarded funding for the whole hoise refurbishment of an off-gas 1930’s three bed, semi-detached unoccupied house that had poor levels of energy efficiency, near Devizes, Wiltshire. The challenge was to turn the house into a highly energy efficient home. Sarsen Housing will be evaluated by the Energy Saving Trust for at least 2 years with the potential for lower cost implementation in volume across the remaining social housing stock.
