Korea is located on a peninsula that extends out of the Asian

mainland toward Japan. Its area is about the

same size as the state of Utah. Korea's climate is hot in the

summer and very cold in the winter. Reminiscent of

Japan, Korea is a mountainous land, and only a limited portion of the

peninsula can be farmed, approximately 15%. A mountainous barrier lies

between

Korea and its northern neighbor, Manchuria. Because of

the mountains and the seas, Korea developed remoteness

from its neighbors.

Who were the Korean’s teachers?Who were the Korean’s teachers? In Korea, different clans or tribes controlled different parts of the country.

In 108 B.C., the Han empire subjugated much of Korea and established a

military government there. Owing to the Chinese, Koreans learned about such ideas as

centralized government, Confucianism, Buddhism, and writing.

One of these kingdoms, the Silla, defeated the other kingdoms and chased out the

Chinese. The Silla gained control over the whole Korean peninsula.

Under Silla rule, the Koreans built Buddhist monasteries and, produced stone and

bronze sculptures. They also developed a writing system suitable for writing

Korean

“phonetically” though still using Chinese characters. Saveliy K.

The Silla rule weakened toward the tenth century.

Then Wang Kon (rebel officer) gained control of Korea and became king around 935. Kon named his dynasty The Koryu Dynasty.

This information was taken from page 311 in WORLD HISTORY: Patterns Of Interaction textbook

The Koryu Dynasty’s government came from Chinas central government. Also Confucianism was used in schools to train male scholars.

Later the society was divided into two. One side was aristocracy and the other were the rest of the society. Despite the systems, nobles got the best positions which became hereditary.

This dynasty lasted for four and a half centuries.

The Problems of The Koryu Dynasty

In 1100s there were many rebellions .

Soon after this the Mongols came to Korea and demanded a devastating tribute from Korean rulers.

The tribute that was given to the Mongols were 20, 000 horses, clothing for one million soldiers, many children and artisans for slaves.

Mongols stayed in Korea till the 1350’s. In 1932 a group of scholar-officials and military leaders took over the Koryu Dynasty and established a new one called Chosen Dynasty which ruled for 518 years.
