Potentate’s Message

Greetings Nobles and Ladies,

Now that summer is officially over and everyone is back from vacation, we are looking toward the activities until the end of the year.

I attended the dinner where our ladies of the Daughters of the Nile welcomed the Supreme Queen at Almas. This was a delightful evening which was well attended by our ladies. Next was the North West-BCC Shrine Club annual Shrimp Feast. It was a very enjoyable afternoon. The food and fellowship were excellent.

I participated in the Yacht Club’s second “cruise” of the year which was held at the home of Ill. Sir Don Holliday. Don served grilled steaks and the members brought enormous amounts of delicious food. The month of August ended with the monthly Board Meeting where business of the Temple was discussed. We were shown a sample of the new web site being developed. The Divan met all day on the following Saturday to develop plans to increase the Temple financial status in the coming years. More about this later.

September began with the monthly business meeting. Were you there to take part in the discussions? Then it was off to Virginia Beach to attend the annual MASA meeting. The weather was great, the parade was outstanding, and Almas came home with a car full of trophies. The Motor Corps won a first place in the competition, the Color Guard won First Place, the Yacht Club Marching Unit won First Place, the Yacht Club Float won second place, the Shepherds won second place, and Almas won second place for the Outstanding Temple. I thank all of you who participated in the competition

and worked hard to get everything together. You can see that a little enthusiasm and support can lead to great things for Almas. I hope everyone will lend their support for an even better showing next year. Clubs and Units, get after the new members and make them a part of your organization.

Keep in mind that Almas is only as good as its members make it.

Yours in the Faith,

Potentate

Daughters of the Nile

Almas Yacht Club

Congratulations to Samla Temple, No 51 for the wonderful job of welcoming our Supreme Queen Cathy Carol Rose to our temple on Saturday, August 13. The ceremonial was lovely and the banquet was very nice. Our group is small in number, so it was “all hands on deck” and I appreciate everyone’s efforts. There was a special performance by our Patrol Unit using feather fans and dancing to the song “Copacabana”. It was fun to see the “show girls dancing there with feathers in their hair!”

Thank you to Potentate Fred W. Evans for bringing us greetings from Almas Shriners and Paul Friedlander, P.P., Hospital Representative for Almas Shriners for bringing us news about the Philadelphia Hospital. It means a lot to us that you take time from your busy schedules to

join us in honoring the Supreme Queen.

Welcome to our two newest members Adriana Orsi and Marietha Dongmo! We are so happy that you have joined us. I hope you enjoy the membership and find it as rewarding as I do.

Samla Temple invites all to our upcoming events:Sunday, Oct 16 – Dinner at the Watson’s home. Join us for fun and fellowship.Sunday, Nov 6, 2-6pm – A Wine Tasting event at the Olney Winery in Olney, MD.For more information email me a [email protected].

Sincerely,Virginia Schweitzer, QueenSamla Temple No. 51, Daughters of the NileWashington, DC

The Fall MASA meeting in Virginia Beach September 7–10 was well attended by Almas Shrine Yacht Club. The hard work that goes into preparing for the parade and other events paid off. ASYC Banner and Marching team won first place while the ASYC float placed second this year. Trophies are on display at the Temple. I extend a hearty thank you to all ASCY members who participated—helpers, drivers, riders, and marchers. I would like to send a special thank you to Ill. Sir Don Holliday, PC, and Noble Jay Whitcomb, PC, for their timely and excellent help in assembly and disassembly of the float. Without their help the float would not have been ready in time.

At the Mid Atlantic Association of Shrine Yacht Clubs Change of Watch, held in conjunction with MASA, ASYC was presented with a plaque for first place in the annual Rendezvous radio control boat race. Also, during the Change of Watch, Ill Sir Rick Hall, PC, was installed as Commodore, Potentate Ill Sir Fred Evans, PC, was installed as Rear Commodore, and I was installed as Fleet Captain. We look forward to working with Commodore Rick to make next year a success and the Rendezvous at Spring Cove Marina in Solomons Island the best yet.

As the fall season approaches ASYC is preparing for end of year activities. Our Frostbite cruise will be October 16 and will return to Pirates Cove Restaurant in Galesville, a short drive south of Annapolis on the shores of the West River for excellent food in a beautiful setting. As with all ASYC cruises, an invitation is extend to all Nobles to join us. Please contact ASYC Secretary Maurice Herbert, PC, at [email protected] so we can get an attendance count.

Other fall activities include the November elections meeting and the Christmas Party to be held at the Temple on December 2nd. The election meeting is traditionally stag and for members only. The Christmas Party, as with all ASYC functions, is open to all Nobles. As information finalizes I will post it in this column and on the ASYC Facebook page. Preliminary contact has been made with the North Pole for a special guest.

“There is nothing—absolutely nothing—half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.”

Commodore Frank

The Almas Yacht Club PresentsThe Almas Shrine Center’s

2016 White House Holiday Ornament Project

The 2016 White House Christmas ornament honors the administration of Herbert Hoover, who served as the thirty-first president of the United States from 1929 to 1933. It is inspired by the fire engines that responded to the 1929 Christmas Eve fire at the White House and toy trucks presented to children by the Hoovers the following Christmas. The four-alarm fire brought nineteen engine companies and four truck companies to the White House. The ornament is crafted from shiny brass, plated with nickel and 24-karat gold, and the engine carries a Christmas tree for delivery to the White House. This year’s ornament design was created by art student Kayla Whelan, the winner of a national art school design competition created by the White House Historical Association.

Nobles – It’s hard to believe that we’ve entered Fall and in a few short months 2016 will be coming to an end. I’m going to keep this month’s Chief Rabban update short and to the point. I find that communicating to you via the Alibi is fraught with challenges. First, I have no idea if you read these articles or not. Second, this is a one way means of communicating so I rarely get feedback. Finally, having to communicate to you up to six weeks in advance of an event is contrary to the dynamic times we live in. So here’s what we need – Current Email addresses so we can communicate faster! We are missing email addresses for nearly 200 nobles. Please take the following actions ASAP

1) Create a Web Fez Account - https://webfez.shrinenet.org

2) Register if you haven’t already

3) Update your contact information!

There’s been a great deal of planning for next year. Please be sure to attend the November and December busi-ness meetings for more details. We will also finalize the 2017 budget at one of those meetings. Here are some other dates to begin planning for. Keep in mind that many clubs and units still owe me current dates and that some of these are subject to change.

The Winter Ceremonial is December 17 at Almas Temple. It is time to start planning. Unless I am told otherwise, I will presume that everyone will be returning to their same parts. If that is not the case, please let me know as soon as possible. I am already aware of a couple of parts that might be coming open. In the meantime, anyone want-ing to take a part, please contact me by mid-October at [email protected]. Parts will be given on an as available basis.

We also need people to assist Noble Eddie Dixon on the Second Section. If you are interested in the Second Section, please let me know as this is becoming an integral part of the initia-tion experience.

Rather than a festive board, the Poten-tate has decreed that we should have a coed luncheon after the Ceremonial. This luncheon may be occasioned by the usual toasts. During the Ceremoni-al, our ladies will be given a presenta-tion on the Shrine and Shriners Hos-pitals, thereby maintaining the closed Ceremonial we have come to enjoy.

I’m looking forward to another great Ceremonial.

Thanks,In the Faith, Alan L. Gordon, P.P.Ceremonial Director

Ceremonial CastIn October, Almas Shriners Club in São Paulo will be receiving our Dispensa-tion petitions from Shriners International with the objective of forming a new Shriners Temple UD in 2017. This would never have come to pass without the vision and dedication of Almas Shrine and all its members. Your support since 2009 has made this a reality and you all deserve to be recognized for that unselfish sacrifice.

In my opinion, we will always be Almas Shriners in our hearts. Though we leave our first home, the spirit of expanding Shrinedom that Almas has dem-onstrated will continue with our new Temple here in São Paulo. The name ‘Brasil’ Shriners Temple was chosen with the objective of seeding Brazil’s masonic community with the ideals and spirit of the Shriners which has been exhibited by Almas Shrine.

São Paulo is the size of the United Kingdom and has a population of over 43 million. With those kinds of challenges, we have been forming regional centers (nuclei) throughout the state that have helped to generate and sustain the participation of members and future membership for those who live 400+ miles away from our club headquarters on Paulista Avenue in the state capital. These regional centers will form their own clubs, eventually forming Temples of their own.

The 55,000 masons in our state, as well as other masons in neighboring states, have been very enthusiastic towards our Shriners fraternity. This has all come to pass because of Almas’ efforts in South America.

It’s our sincere wish that meeting all the necessary requirements and receiving our Dispensation in July of 2017 that you all can be there with us to see the fruits of your labors.

Almas Ambassador for São Paulo,

David Arthur Whittemore

Temple Dispensation for São Paulo, Brazil

Today, nine-year-old Zion Harvey can throw a baseball over home plate. He can write in his journal, prepare himself lunch and manage zippers on his clothes. However, for most of his life, these and many other ordinarily actions were impossible for this little boy. In the days and weeks after surgery, Zion had to start small: wriggling a thumb and flexing his fingers required intense concentration. He spent more than a month at CHOP, recovering from surgery and participating in rigorous occupational and physical therapy, before returning to his home near Baltimore.

Today, Zion is able to swing a bat and throw a football. He can take medicine and get dressed by himself. He can pick up important objects: a pencil, a fork, a piece of pizza.

“He’s gaining independence and that is the whole reason why we do this,” said L. Scott Levin, MD. “Zion’s remark-able progress would not have been possible without a large team of multidisciplinary specialists and the foundational work our hand transplant team at Penn Medicine has built, starting with our first adult hand transplant in 2011” “After the transplant healed, it was very important for Zion to be in therapy full-time.” said surgeon Benjamin Chang, M.D. “This is when we can make the most progress in terms of getting his function to come back, helping the tendons to glide, the muscles to grow stronger, actually re-teaching his brain how to fire those muscles again and then teaching him how to do things like writing. He and his family have managed this so well, beyond our expectations.”

Over the past year, Zion has spent up to eight hours a day in rehabilitation at Kennedy Krieger Institute, near his home in Baltimore. Occupational therapy is essential as Zion’s brain relearns how to communicate with limbs that were missing for six years and his muscles and tendons gain strength and flexibility.
