Editor’s Note

It’s another wedding issue and there is just so much to cover.Until we delved into it, last month, I never knew weddings had so much content. There is so much to write about this life-changing step in a person’s life.

For the couple and their families, it’s a journey that changes everyone. But, how do you organise the perfect wedding? This is our concern and the very reason we debut this monthly wedding issue.

Today, we have featured two couples on the cover. What is interesting about the two is that they are cross-culture marriages. One, inter-tribal; the other, inter-racial.

Love knows no race or tribe. It lands wherever it wills and lucky are those who find it.

Tosin Bucknor and her beau, French Aurelien Boyer, tied the knots last weekend while son of Coscharis chairman, Cosmas Maduka Jr., crossed the Niger to marry his lovely wife, Temitope Odutola, earlier. Turn to pp. 8-9 for more.

An important part of the wedding paraphenelia is preparing the bride; after all, she owns the day. In ‘Beauty for the Bride’, Yemisi Suleiman writes on priming the bride for the D-day.

But, before the bride gets the ring, how does she secure a second date after the first? Jemi Ekunkunbor has the answers on p7.

For a wedding to be successful, every tiny-weeny detail must be sorted out. One detail that can make or break the success tag is the wedding party. This is where so many fail the litmus test. It just has to be right to the last T! There are no half measures. Pamela Echemunor leads us to the dancing floor in ‘The Wedding Party’.

Enjoy! And, have a great week!

The second edition of ‘Fashion Arts Fusion’, an event aimed at celebrating fashion and arts, held

penultimate Sunday at the Oriental Hotel in Victoria Island, Lagos. It began with collections from three young, upcoming student designers from the Yaba College of Technology, showing their creativity

and proving that they deserve a spotlight on the fashion radar. The event also featured collections of three top designers: Ejiro Amos Tafiri, who sent models down the runway in printed pants and her signature girly outfits; Ayo Van Elmer showcased an eclectic urban mix collection

with a debut of her first men’s collection. Then, designer and initiator of ‘Fashion Arts Fusion’, Austin Aimankhu of Luzol label, displayed a collection tagged ‘Black is bold’ and a wearable arts collection, sending models down the runway in pieces with different forms of art works, accompanied by ‘bata’ drum beats.Theme for this year’s event, ‘Roots Inspired’, according to Aimankhu, wasinformed by the need to promote African culture through fashion, arts and music; all of which were in abundance during the show. The main objective of the event, he said, is to establish graduates of fashion and design from higher institutions as well as support a selected charity organization annually. “This year, we are supporting Noah’s Ark Foundation for Sickle Cell,” he revealed. The event, supported by GAC Motors, was spiced with poetry rendition and spectacular performances by Ijodee and Aduni Nefatiti.

It is every girl’s dream to put her best foot forward on her wedding day. But choosing a pair of wedding shoes is never quite an easy task because there are such a wide variety of shapes, styles and colours to choose from. When choosing your dream pair of shoes, keep a few things in mind. You’ll be wearing the pair all day to stand in and dance. Comfort should be upper most on your mind. For this reason

Take time to try it out before your big day and if possible, have a rehearsal and practice walking in them before the wedding day.If your choice of dress is a simple one, go for a pair of statement shoes. If it’s a peep toe, do have a pedicure.

to looking radiant on your big day, is choosing the perfect wedding makeup. Doing this, requires several steps, such as prepping your skin so it will look radiant, deciding who will do your makeup, learning how to properly apply makeup that is best suited to your complexion and more. Here are tips to help you look picture perfect as recommended by our celebrity make-up guru.

If you have not been thorough about your skin-care routine, now is the time to begin: “Getting regular facials makes a big difference in your skin’s texture and helps you have the best base for makeup” says makeup artist, Yewande Peregrino of Beyond Faces Makeovers. “Schedule monthly treatments, aim for at least three months that will illuminate and firm your complexion” she added.

START WITH YOUR SKIN

Next step is to ensure you get the right makeup artist. If you know someone who looked fabulous on her wedding day, ask her who her make-up artist was! Personal recommendations are always the best but you can search online. If you love natural, pretty make-up, avoid a makeup artist that has a portfolio full of dark smokey eyes and bright lips. If you find someone who is available, arrange a trial and make sure you take lots of images of looks that you love from magazines and online.

GET AN EXPERT MAKE-UP ARTIST

1

2

For brides getting married in warmer climates like ours, Yewande says, “consider using as many oil-free products as possible: primer, moisturizer, foundation, etc, and keep oil-free blotting sheets on hand.

CONSIDER CLIMATE BEFORE APPLYING MAKEUP

3

To find someone who understands your style, consult a few different makeup artists early on. “You want to see if you work well together” says Ywande. Book at least six months ahead, and then schedule an additional trial two months before the wedding. “You will be more settled in the planning and will have a better feel of how you want to look,” she informs.

PLAN A TRIAL RUN 4

Though it might feel otherwise, your wedding day is a long day and you will want your makeup to hold up through every last photo, dance, toast, and selfie. That makes primer essential: Spread it on your face and eyelids, after cleansing and moisturizing, then top with a foundation to create a smooth base. “Apply everything in thin, even layers,” says Peregrino.. That goes for blush, highlighter, translucent powder, and lipstick, too. “Use a lip liner, put on your lipstick, blot, add more lipstick, blot, and add more lipstick,” she says. “This process really seals the product to the lips and makes for a perfect stain.” Don’t think that waterproof mascara is the only waterproof option for your eye make-up, there are waterproof eyeliners (pencil/ liquid/ gel), specific eye shadow primers, eye shadow paints/ sticks/ bases which all help towards creating an eye make-up look that once applied, won’t smudge.

MAKE YOUR MAKEUP LAST5

“Your wedding day is not a time to experiment,” says Yewande. “You want your photos to be timeless.” One look that never fails is radiant skin, rosy cheeks, pink lips and some definition on the eyes. Using a gel liner like Maybelline, work it into the base of your lashes, and then apply it to the upper waterline for effect.

STAY NEUTRAL6

Luminous skin looks delicate. To control shine, dust translucent powder across the forehead, sides of the nose, and on the chin with a powder puff. Then apply a soft, shimmery to just the temples and tops of cheekbones. “To brighten eyes, you can also dab it on the inner corners and under the brow bone,” Yewande advises. “It’s so sheer, it looks natural.” If you have oily skin, there are amazing silicone based waterproof liquid cheek stains which will give you the same effect.

GET THE BRIDAL GLOW 7

Neutral makeups, natural-looking nails, once again, pass on the bright, colourful shades. This is because, a bright, punchy polish will distract from your beautiful white gown. Plus, chips are much more noticeable on bright nails. Stick with softer shades and make sure they are sheer, not chalky.

KEEP NAILS SIMPLE8

Your wedding day will be all smiles, kisses, champagne toasts, and even a few happy tears. So, “don’t expect your initial makeup application to last eight hours,” Yewande says. Pack a touch-up kit with the essentials, blush, translucent powder, cotton swabs, and tissues, and stash it in a bridesmaid’s clutch. You can ask your groom to carry a gloss in his pocket, since you will be in his arm for most of the day, “A pretty lip gloss in a shade similar to the lipstick you were wearing at the beginning of the day makes touch-ups quicker and easier,” she says.

As exciting as going on a first date may appear, it can be a very daunting task as well. With all the butterflies flapping in one’s stomach, making a simple

decision on the choice of dress to wear can even be confusing. Any wrong move can make or mar the future of this relationship. It is the reason why some girls never get that second call for a second date. The first date therefore is very crucial. It could be the first step to a “happily-ever-after” life. Going on a first date is certainly about putting your best foot forward. And this applies to both genders. It’s a time for you to be the best version of yourself. For some people, going on a first date is like going for a job or Visa interview. You have to be at your best because you will never get a second chance to make a first impression. Your first impression could be the way you are dressed, it could be how you spoke, the kind of conversation you raised, it could be with your poise and grace as a woman and to the extreme, it could even be with the perfume you wore. You really never know.Getting a second date is a sign that everything went well the first time. But does it always come?“My wife earned her second date because when

I met her, she had no airs about her’’ says Stand up comic, Koffi Idowu-Nuel. ‘’She was very simple and friendly. I liked that about her and I decided that I wanted to see her again’’.For Alistair (surname withheld) a businessman, it was his date’s conduct that attracted him the most. According to him, “she was a very well behaved girl. She was well put together, nothing was out of order. I liked that a lot because it just tells me that she is someone I can take out and not feel ashamed. I knew she would just be able to conduct herself well. Thankfully, she is still like that after marriage’’. Getting a second date says relationship expert, Jerome Yaovi-Onipede depends on the man as men have different tastes in women. According to him, ‘a woman will not get a date by following stereotype attitude and behaviour’’. He noted however, that a functional man will be moved by a woman’s “amiable disposition, her ability to express herself, her capacity not to use too much make up, her ability to dress simply but elegantly and her ability not to probe deeply into her date’s life’. A few men interviewed on this subject and who would not want their names in print, revealed that they are easily weary of women who are bossy

and argumentative. Some of the girls who never got a second date fell into this category. The fear for them is that such girls go on to become very controlling. This is a huge fear for many men. Experts advise that for women who are strong and like to win every argument, your first date is not the place for this. Rather, it is to her benefit to show the softer, gentler side of her. Also, some men argue that women who tend to go too physical on a first date are a put off. It is preferred if they take things slowly. They would rather want women with some self restraint. Hold back a little and wait for the right time. A first date is the place for best. Sex should not be the beginning. A little touching while chatting and laughing is not harmful. But wanting more than just a hand contact on that first date gives a wrong signal. In case you are going on a date this weekend, remember this initial date could make or mar you. Dress smartly and elegantly. No indecent exposure and avoid projecting the wrong image. Keep a straight head and concentrate on your date. Let him know the meeting is important to you. Show interest in him, avoid distractions; making and taking phone calls that break your conversation. Above all wear the best accessory- a great smile!

Wedding Bells: When Love Knows No Culture

In the old days, cross-culture and inter-racial marriages were considered unorthodox, based on

reasons such as language barrier, distance and traditional beliefs. That has now become a thing of the past as more and more couples have taken a stand against this archaic mindset. Instead, people allow love lead them through.

Recently, two couples proved that culture and race hold no bounds on true love. One of them, Cosmas Maduka Jr., son of entrepreneur and C.E.O. of Coscharis Motors, Dr. Cosmas Maduka, who married his love of many years, Temitope Odutola, in a suave ceremony that brought personalities from various industries - ranging from entertainment to politics.

The cross-culture wedding was colourful and glamourous. One of the highlights of the day was when the couple were ushered into the reception venue in a stunning red Jaguar F Limited Edition car, looking very luxurious.

Some guests in attendance included Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, former Lagos State Governor,

Babatunde Raji Fashola, Dr. Pat Utomi, Blackmagic, Taje Prest for DZRPT TV, Fade Ogunro, Lynxxx, Nedu and many of Lagos’ finest.

Another couple defying odds in marriage is the inter-racial pair on-air-personality (O.A.P.), Tosyn Bucknor, who married her French lover, Aurelien ‘Irawo’ Boyer, on Sunday, 15th November, 2015, at the Landmark Events Centre, Oniru, Victoria Island, Lagos.

‘Irawo’ as Tosyn calls him, works with Lafarge Engineering Construction in Nigeria. The inter-racial couple dated for two years before Aurelien proposed to her back in August; during their vacation in Corsica, South of France.

The colourful wedding ceremony was attended by personalities and O.A.P.s from the entertainment industry, some of which included Olu Jacobs, Joke Silva, Banky W, Toke Makinwa, Ubi Franklin, Yaw, and Gbemi Olateru-Olagbegi amongst others.

The Wedding Party-

There are a lot of activities leading up to the wedding day. The planning of one’s wedding tends to put a lot of pressure on a couple, so in order to relieve themselves, certain roles and responsibilities are assigned to specific people whom the couple feel are capable of ensuring everything goes right. Here are some roles and responsibilities of the wedding party members in case you find yourself tasked to play any of these roles. Furthermore, we took a look into the wedding of Cosmos Maduka Junior who recently wedded Titi Odutola at a suave ceremony which held at TLC Centre in Victoria Island. Atubi Adesanmi was on hand to take pictures through the whole process of the wedding.

Roles and Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the best man starts with ensuring the groom has the best of everything. Starting with choosing his Tux, and then other things follow like organizing fittings for the groom and other grooms men, making arrangements for accommodation, especially if there are people coming from out of town. His role also includes keeping everyone on the wedding team informed on scheduled dates, planning the bachelor’s eve, helping him get dressed on the wedding day, giving the wedding toast and so on. In the end, the best man is responsible for anything concerning the groom and activities surrounding him.

The groom’s men consist of a posse of men who are specifically chosen by the groom to assist the best man in his duties. While the best man does most of the heavy lifting, the grooms men play the role of assistants by seeing to the needs of the guests from the grooms side of the family, working with the brides maids, assisting in planning and arranging the bachelor’s eve etc.

Just like the groom’s men, the bridal train consists of a posse of young single women, mostly friends and relatives of the bride and maybe from the groom’s family as well. Bridesmaids are

tasked with the responsibility of assisting the Chief bride’s maid with her duties to the bride, from the planning to the end stage of the wedding arrangements. The bridal train members will also escort a groom’s man down the aisle before the bride and groom come in. And just

like the groom’s men, bride’s maids’ also partake in planning the bridal shower and Bachelorette night (Hen Night).

Like the little bride, the ring bearer is a young boy between the ages of 3 -8. As the ring bearer, he is in possession of the wedding bands, supervised by the best man. His main duties include escorting the little bride down the aisle ahead of the bride and handing the ring to the groom during the ceremony.

As the name implies, the father of the bride could either be her biological father or a representative of the father. His sole responsibility is to escort the bride down the aisle and hand her over to her husband to be.

To be a chief bridesmaid, one must first and foremost, be cool and collected, because the bride expects everything to be hitch free and anything less will turn her to a “Bridezilla”. Your go to saying should be “Happy bride, blissful day”. As a chief bridesmaid, you’re responsible for the wellbeing of the bride from the day she chooses you up till after the “I dos’”. Starting with her dress, makeup, putting her bridal train in check, escorting the best man on the wedding day, working hand in hand with the best man on the wedding schedules, making sure the bride has everything she needs before, during and after the wedding and so on. Your sole responsibility lies to ensuring the bride is happy and satisfied at all times.

Kate Middleton the Duchess of Cambridge had a nine foot train (tail of the bride’s dress) on her wedding day; Her Alexander McQueen lace dress trailed by an elongated train became a trend for wedding dresses, Kim Kardashian and Sarah Burton followed suit with extra long trains after this. Most times, a bride’s train can measure up to 15 feet and longer depending on the bride’s preference, and while part of the responsibilities of the Chief bride’s maid may include carrying the bride’s train, a train bearer is appointed to ease her of this. A train bearer can be a young boy or girl between the ages of 8 and 16, who will help the bride lift the train as she walks down the aisle and also help her move round with ease wherever she goes. A train bearer’s job ends at the church, as most brides have a wardrobe change for the reception.

BrideVenue Ideas for theNon-conformist

by - Pamela Echemunor

The popular culture of getting married at the church is fast becoming a thing of the past. And as important as it is to be married in the presence of God, some believe that God is everywhere; to be adventurous in their choice of a wedding venue. There are many exciting and fun places to choose from; from beautiful little alleys to historical landmarks. Here are a few of our favourite venues to consider for the non-conformist bride.

A 4 – 5 star hotel with a view of the sea is very refreshing, standing at the rooftop of the hotel and ogling at the perfection of nature from an Ariel view, is an unbeatable experience not easily forgotten.

The beach is God’s most gracious gift to man: it has magnificent healing abilities and it stands the test of time. If you’re a beach lover, you know what I mean. It’s an ideal location for weddings especially in the summer inhale the salty air and let nature bless your union. Plus the reception can happen immediately after right there.

Get married like royalty at a landmark location, somewhere with a historical background. And one day you can go back there and relive the experience as well as have a fairytale to tell your children and their children for generations to come.

Art galleries are unique places, with a retrospective view of the world through art; getting married at an art gallery is a perfect way to start your lives together.
