All Saints’ Academy has provided many opportunities for me including interviewing a Labour MP, attending a Sky Sports tour as well as representing ASA at Open Evenings and in sports fixtures as captain of the sixth form netball team. I feel that it is these opportunities that gave me the courage to apply for Head Student, making me fortunate to be in my current position. The subjects that I am studying are Biology, BTEC Sport and Psychology. It is the dedication of students and teachers as well as the friendly atmosphere that makes this sixth form, in my opinion, like no other in the county. The support of the teachers is second to none, and they will help in any way possible. It is down to them that I am now in the position to be applying for university to study either Sport and Exercise Science at Bath University or Sports Therapy.

EMILY TOWLE, HEAD STUDENT (Joined us from Winchcombe School)

After studying at All Saints’ throughout my secondary education, I can honestly say that it provides every student with outstanding opportunities, ranging from touring the Houses of Parliament and interviewing a Labour MP to a six week skiing programme. I feel that these opportunities as well as the ongoing support that is offered to every student are what gave me the ambition to apply for Head Girl. I currently study Business Studies, English Literature, Psychology and Spanish. I feel as though the friendly atmosphere that is omnipresent throughout All Saints’ along with the constant support and dedication of all staff and students is the key factor to the success of the school and particularly the Sixth Form. It is down to this support and dedication that I am currently in the position to apply to top Universities to study Law.

DANIELLE SCREEN, HEAD STUDENT (Joined us from ASA)

At the moment I am studying; Philosophy and ethics, English Literature, History and mathematics all at A2 level. All Saints` Academy is an excellent school that has outstanding staff and resources. I have been very well supported in my A-levels and I have been given so many opportunities at the school. The school has given me the confidence to achieve the top grades, such as my A grade in Philosophy and Ethics. As a result of this it has given me the chance to apply to Russell Group Universities – the top universities in the country.

JACK LANE, HEAD STUDENT (Joined us from ASA)

I am proud to be head student at All Saints’ Academy. I am currently studying BTEC Sport and BTEC Business. In my time at All Saints’ Academy I have been able to take advantage of many different opportunities such as representing the school football team and going on school trips to Barcelona on the football tour and Austria on a ski trip. I chose to return to the Academy’s Sixth Form because I was encouraged by the dedication in which the PE staff have shown in order for me to gain any qualifications I need for the future. I am hoping to continue my education at University studying Sports Management and I believe that All Saints’ has given me the confidence and study skills for me to achieve this goal.

DANIEL NEWMAN, HEAD STUDENT (Joined us from ASA)

Study OptionsNow that you have to stay in education or training until you’re 18, fortunately there are plenty of different qualifications you can study for at 16 which will lead you into work, apprenticeships, traineeships or Higher Education.

Pathway Prior Attainment Options

1 6 GCSE’s A* - B or above inc English and Maths 4 subjects mainly AS/A2

2 5 GCSE’s A* - C including English and Maths 4 subjects mainly AS/A2, Applied AS/A2 and one BTEC

3 5 GCSE’s A* - C including English or Maths 4 subjects at BTEC plus English or Maths GCSE retake

4 If you are unlikely to attain ‘C’ grade in English and Maths you will need to follow this pathway

Transition Course

Students are given high quality support to choose the most appropriate courses.

A-LevelA-Levels are usually spaced out over two years and are made up of two units: AS and A2 Levels. The majority of students complete their A-levels between the age of 16-18 in order to apply to university, although they are also useful when choosing to go straight into paid work or in order to train as an apprentice.

BTECBTECs are widely recognised, work-related qualifications suitable for a wide range of abilities, which are designed to accommodate the employers’ requirements but which also give you the opportunity to go on to university. BTECs provide a coursework based approach to learning whilst still delivering subject theory. If you have only just missed out on a grade C in English or Maths, we timetable resit lessons to attain a grade C in that subject. You will also study Level 3 courses (AS and BTECs) that will help you achieve your goals.

GCSEsAt All Saints’ Academy we recognise that some students do not achieve C grades in English and Maths. For these students we are offering a Level 2 Transition Course.

Entry RequirementsAt All Saints’ Academy the Sixth Form requires at least five A* - C GCSEs or equivalent Level 2 courses. However, we do consider each applicant on their merits. We will look at your attendance, abilities, gifts, talents and above all your commitment to do your best alongside your GCSE/BTEC results.

Careers Advice

Speak to your Careers department, parents, subject teachers or tutors, especially if you already have an idea of what career you’d like to pursue. You will have the opportunity to discuss your future career plans at your Sixth Form interview. Studying relevant subjects gives you a huge advantage when applying to university or employment opportunities.

Enjoyment

It is important that you enjoy the subjects you choose, but they should also challenge you and get you where you want to go. Choosing what you are good at is a good place to start but remember, the more academically challenging A-Level subjects open more doors to future opportunities.

Research

Look carefully at the course overview for new subjects our Sixth Form is offering that were not available at GCSE, e.g. sociology, psychology. Some students find that they take these courses without looking into them properly first, and are then disappointed when it’s not what they were expecting. Talk to your subject teachers about your strengths and weaknesses to assess your potential, allowing you to make more informed decisions about which A levels you choose.

Please see Mr Carroll If you are considering an Oxbridge application.

Here are some factors you SHOULD consider when choosing A-Level subjects:

Overseas StudentsAll Saints’ Academy is proud to work in partnership with EF High School Exchange Year.

“Being an exchange student at All Saints’ Academy was a pleasure, I studied Psychology, Business, Health and Social Care and Travel and Tourism. I enjoyed the modern way how the lessons were given and the dedication of the teachers. They have been very helpful and supportive regarding my difficulty with the English language. We also had many great opportunities to develop further skills such as work experiences, the trip to Parliament and Young Enterprise. I received a lot of wise advice concerning my application to university; now, I am studying International Business at Maastricht University. “ Ségolène Geron

I walked in to All Saints’ Academy on the first day like most foreign exchange students do, terrified and excited. When I walked out of the building at the end of the day, the only feeling left was excitement. I felt like this school was really going to help me make the most of my year. And I was not disappointed. All teachers are not only genuinely nice, but well vested in their subjects and interested in you and your experience. I am currently studying Music Technology, Psychology and Film Studies. I am also in the school choirs from which I get the opportunity to sing in Gloucester Cathedral. I will be happy to say that All Saints’ has helped me all through my time here at the end of my exchange year.

Elsa Solvin

“EF High School Exchange Year is proud to work in partnership with All Saints’ Academy, Cheltenham, bringing students from across the world to experience the high level of support, guidance and opportunity available to all students that attend the school.

EF High School Exchange Year is always looking to welcome more families to the EF Community to host our students whilst they are in the country. For more information please contact Julie Parr, or alternatively have a look online www.efhighschoolyear.co.uk.”

PHOTOGRAPHY AS/A2Photography A-level is a practical and critical subject where projects are supported by the analysis of the work of others and annotation of the students’ own work. The analysis of historical work and contemporary pieces is integral in the investigating and making process. Traditional methods of producing image are studied; work produced is through digital medium.

Skills and process workshops are the backdrop for the learning of the camera, lenses, lighting, compositional devices, technical skills, editing and manipulating techniques. Students will gain an understanding of styles, genres, traditions and how images relate to social, political, religious, environmental, cultural and ethical contexts. Ideas, feelings and meanings of an image will be explored both in research and the students’ work.

Students will work in one or more of the following areas;portraiture, landscape photography, still-life photography, documentary photography (photo journalism), experimental imagery and photographic installation (video, television and film).

ResourcesUSB sticks and sketchbooks. Printing contributions/professional printing costs may arise depending upon work produced by the individual. A digital camera will be required at times for researching topics, subject matter and locations. Digital SLRs are available on loan from the Academy.

WHAT IF I DON’T GAIN A GRADE C IN ENGLISH OR MATHS?

At All Saints’ Academy we recognise that some students do not achieve C grades in English and Maths.

Many of these students wish to continue their education in a Sixth Form, but many schools and colleges are reluctant to admit students or allow them to take Level 3 courses. We do things differently at All Saints’ Academy.

All students have an interview where they can explain why they want to study their chosen subjects. If you have only just missed out on a grade C in English or Maths, we timetable resit lessons to attain a grade C in that subject. The student is also allowed to study Level 3 courses (AS and BTECs) that will help them achieve their goals.

Some students at the end of Year 11 fail to achieve C grades in English and Maths. Level 3 courses are often difficult for students to achieve easily without these basic skills. For these students we are offering a Level 2 Transition Course.

TRANSITION COURSE

What is included:

Lessons for English and Maths GCSE will be timetabled for about 20% of a student’s week. This will allow students to study these subjects in a fresh way that enables success. These two core subjects will be combined with other Level 2 BTEC and GCSE (or equivalent) courses that are new to the student. We have included a Work Skills qualification that involves practical experience in the important areas of searching for a job, applying for a job, interview skills and money management. Students will visit careers exhibitions and work with local employers to enable them to be fully prepared for employment. Employment in our region of England is dominated by the retail and tourist industries, and because of this have chosen BTEC courses in Retail and Travel and Tourism. These courses will provide our students with a qualification respected by all employees, and also the skills and knowledge employers now find desirable. We are also including a GCSE IT qualification in order to equip our students with the technology skills that will help them be successful in education and the work place.

We will try to be flexible to include courses that meet the needs of these students. Our expectation is that students on this course will achieve C grades (or equivalent) in all their subjects during Year 12 and then be able to take Level 3 courses the next year at All Saints’ Academy or at another 16-19 provider.Le

Transition Course

Students are given high quality support to choose the most appropriate courses.

Getting to University Most of the students in our Sixth Form go to university and we provide plenty of support to make this happen.Year 11 students considering our Sixth Form are encouraged to make course selections that will stretch them academically and make a smooth transition to a further education or employment.Students are encouraged and supported to make course selections early on and the process of UCAS applications is closely monitored to ensure that students meet deadlines and make appropriate course choices. At All Saints’ Academy we have a bespoke software system called ‘Future Plans’ to help students to calculate their UCAS points and record their research. Students who may be eligible for Oxbridge/Medical/Veterinary courses are identified and encouraged to make early applications. As each major deadline approaches students are reminded by countdowns via email and form tutors – no one in our Sixth form has an excuse for missing deadlines. We provide plenty of information for parents and students. In September there is an information evening for Y13 parents on the application process and in November we have a Higher Education Fair where we have many representatives from University you can speak to yourself. Mr Carroll is available for guidance and support throughout the application process throughout the year.Of course university is not for everyone but all students are encouraged to consider it as one of their future options. Where students choose not to apply to university we provide full support to make applications for apprenticeships, employment or gap year.
