Dear Colleagues,

As you all are aware, we are on a journey which we embarked on earlier this year. This journey is about change and evolution to remain relevant.

Change has been the vehicle that has kept AEL relevant to its customers and the markets it serves for 116 years. AEL has to change the way that it does business since the world we operate in, our customers, and markets are constantly changing. To exist and remain relevant will demand faster and more frequent change.

To succeed on our strategic journey of “The Next Stretch 2017”, in the quest to double profits; our performance and everyday work must be underscored by foundations that ensure the company’s success and sustainability into the future.

AEL Safety first

AEL employees were hosted at the Piston Ring Club in Modderfontein for the Annual Drivers’ Safety Competition.

Spirits were at an all-time high as the adrenalin kicked in and participants faced the driving obstacle course designed to test their skills and alertness.

This year’s event held on 30 August proved bigger, better and more competitive in testing the fine driving skills of our employees thus offering great spectator value.

There was a significant increase in the number of participants and spectators positioning the event as the perfect fun-filled employee engagement day.

Showcasing our capability at the Mining Indonesia Expo

AEL Indonesia participated in the Mining Indonesia Expo held from 4-7 September 2013 at the Jakarta International Expo (JIE) Centre in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta. The Mining Indonesia Expo provides an excellent opportunity for companies to showcase their products and services to potential clients from the mining sector.

The Mining sector is key to Indonesia. It is a significant provider of export earnings, economic activity and employment whilst supporting regional development. Indonesia is one of the world’s largest producers of tin, coal and copper and makes a huge contribution to

the Indonesian economy, accounting for 11.54% of GDP.

AEL was represented at the event by Achmad Annama Chayat , Training Coordinator & SHE Rep, AEL Indonesia and Greg Rappard, Technical Services Manager, Indonesia.

At the conference, exhibitor seminars and networking sessions, AEL was able to engage with a highly targeted audience of fellow industry professionals.

Our presence afforded our potential customers a sneak preview of our state-of-the-art products, innovations and developments for the market.

AEL Thought Leadership

AEL’s annual WEETR (Workshop for Explosive Engineers and Technical Representatives) was hosted on 24-25 June at Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre.

WEETR has grown in stature over the years with delegates and presenters travelling from all

over the globe for this thought-leadership and information-sharing workshop.

The event comprised a conference where AEL’s internal experts presented a range of key topics associated with their specific product portfolios and an exhibition showcasing our suite of ground-breaking products.

The workshop gives AEL

employees the opportunity to get updates on the latest technical methods and projects, to be trained or refreshed on technical issues and to share their own work through presentations and in-formal discussion.

The event culminated in a ceremony where newly qualified engineers were presented with awards in recognition of their achievements and completion of

the Explosive Engineers course.

Another AEL first was the inclusion of a live Twitter feed at the conference. Delegates were able to follow AEL on Twitter and join in on the conversation about our current success stories in the field and the latest cutting- edge innovations from our R&D department.

Chrisjolet Vos Muller – the epitome of CARE

“Actions speak louder than words. You have to have the confidence to be an example of the morals and values you want your children to have. I strive to instil values of care, honesty, humility and respect for others,” states a passionate Chrisjolet.

“It is important that my children know that I care for them and love them unconditionally! This lays the foundation for them to develop into well-grounded, productive citizens.”

My key role as mother has taught me to nuture my children while inspiring them to greatness. I could not be happier or prouder of my God-given gift of four beautiful daughters who are extraordinarily talented.

AEL recently celebrated Women’s Month focusing on celebrating all the amazing women who display alignment with the AEL values of Confidence, Courage and Care in their professional and private lives.

All Aboard chatted to three wonder women – Muriel, Rita and Chrisjolet who strive to inspire and motivate all who cross their paths.

Muriel “Zaza” Ngcobo

“When I worked as quality auditor, I gained a lot of confidence which equipped me to encourage and motivate colleagues to enjoy and take pride in their work. Being more involved in quality has made me live The AEL Way even at home,” beams Zaza.

A competitive individual by nature, Zaza has seen herself grow within AEL over the years. Her ambition is to work with the Employee Assistance Resource (EAR) group as she is very passionate about the wellbeing of people.

At work Zaza is constantly learning and teaching others. I assist employees to have the self-confidence to overcome challenges thereby improving their wellbeing and increasing productivity.

As a Champion of Wellness, I regularly visit Bolamahlo Home in my community with other Champions of Wellness (COWs) where we dedicate our time to cleaning the home and encouraging underprivileged residents.

Multi-faceted Zaza also owns an events company with her daughter. They specialise in fashion, decor and catering. Through her business she encourages people to be confident in themselves to be able to achieve their desires. I believe that the sky is the limit if we tackle life with confidence in our abilities.

Con Amore School in Edleen and loves horse riding, thriving on its therapeutic value. Hasra, in the picture, is a pure bred Arabian mare who has participated with Alencia at horse shows for disabled persons doing dressage.

Elsje (18) is in matric and will commence her BA Law degree through UNISA next year. She is also a model who graduated top in her class at Steel Model Academy. Not just a pretty face, she is a real adrenaline junky and an avid shot when it comes to target shooting. She also plays an active role in her school’s environmental care initiative.

She recently achieved the Best Girl Track-Athlete award having won the 800m, 1500m and 3000m events. Earlier this year, she started Artistic Gymnastics and was chosen to represent Ekurhuleni North where she received a silver medal during the Gauteng Champs.

Corneli (14) is the drama queen. She won one gold, one silver and three bronze medals at the SA 2013 Olympics of Performance Arts. She also loves playing tennis, is number 2 in the first junior team at school and was invited by the Gauteng East Tennis Association to join their Squat Team.

They all take turns to take care of her needs, brushing her hair, applying makeup or just keeping an “eye” out for her,” the dedicated mother of four.

“Having five women in one house is hectic at times. Yes, we fight together, we cry together, but we always stand together!” concludes Chrisjolet.

As a career woman and mother Rita has faced many challenges and has managed to overcome them with support from family and friends who she describes as her “pillar of strength”.

The most difficult challenge was when she was diagnosed with breast cancer but she was able to rise above this with the support, care and love from Procurement management, colleagues and friends at work who gave her the strength and courage to carry on.

AEL Talent

Sam joined AEL in 2010 as a technician Operator in the Engineering Department at ISAP and was subsequently appointed as Facilities Manager at The Platform in August.

Give us a brief background of your career path?

I started my career in the SANDF where I did my apprenticeship; upon passing my trade test in 2000. I worked in the Engineering department of the SA Navy as a Fleet Electrician. I later joined Transnet and filled the portfolio as an electrician from 2005 to 2010 working at the Saldanha Bay and Richards Bay Terminals, during this time I got my National Diploma in Electrical Engineering through Mangosuthu University of Technology in Durban.

What does your portfolio entail?

I am responsible for the safety, health and environmental programmes at The Platform as well as the management of services and processes that support the core business of the employees at The Platform.

What is your modus operandi? Is it aligned to The AEL Way (confidence, care, courage)?

My modus operandi is self-belief. I have confidence in my skills and the courage and ability in doing my job and serving others.

Do you see yourself as a leader or a team player?

I see myself as both a leader and a team player. I believe in the concept that ”if one wants to be a good leader, one must be a good follower”.

What is your vision for the future within AEL?

I always set my sights on greater achievement. I work really hard and have seen success. I would like to see myself leading one of the property portfolios within AECI in the future.

What are your interests/ hobbies away from the office?

I am an avid Formula One motor grand prix racing fan. I support any team that Lewis Hamilton drives for. Watching these masters of the track really gets my adrenalin pumping but I must admit I’m not a speed freak on the road as I subscribe to the teaching of safety first. At the moment I don’t have any time for hobbies due to my studies, however any spare time I get I dedicate to my wonderful family.

AEL Achievement

As safety continues to take top priority at AEL Botswana, on 9th and 13th September 2013, AEL Botswana launched the “Be Safe Be Happy” campaign at Orapa and Jwaneng mines respectively.

The sites’ SHE Officers, Raymond Taolo and Lydia Ndlovu, each enthusiastically gave a presentation on the 5 bees in the safety campaign to their respective teams, asking questions and awarding spot awards throughout.

On 23 September 2013, AEL Botswana surpassed 12 years of Zero recordable injuries. During this time only First Aid incidents were recorded.

“In a teamwork approach, Botswana management and employees across the various business sites religiously drive the safety programmes in a relentless manner and management continues to elevate ‘Safe Behaviour Observations’ by all, at work and at home, to the same level as customer service and quality,” stated Ronald Joseph, Managing Director – AEL Botswana.

“While at this “Pit Stop” in our journey towards the achievement of 16 years of Zero Harm in 2017 in Botswana, we will reflect on the past and increase the momentum that should see us reach this milestone in 2017.”

Twitter Party

With social media taking the world by storm, AEL instituted a drive to educate and inform employees about the responsible use of social media in their professional and private capacities. The first social media session was held at The Platform earlier this month with the initial focus on Twitter.

Themed “Blue Thursday” in line with the colour of the Twitter brand, the Twitter blue bird icon was used as a promotional tool to draw interest from employees. In welcoming this new bird in the office, employees attended the event where tips were shared on how to create a profile on Twitter and fun prizes were awarded to the individuals who tweeted @ael_mining during the session.

We take great pleasure in announcing that Carl Joubert has been appointed as a Group Engineering Manager since 1 August. We wish Carl all the best in this new role.

On 31 July AEL bade farewell to Group Engineering Manager, Steve Caldwell who has taken early retirement after 32 years of service.

“We would like to thank Steve for his dedication, commitment and outstanding contribution to the business both in South Africa and internationally.

We wish him success on his future endeavours,” said Sepadi Mohlabeng, Executive Director: Group Operations.

AEL Champions

One of AEL’s greatest talents, Daniel Mangoejane, works at the Nitrates Central Bulk Emulsion Plant as Process Controller. He

joined the AECI group in 1994 in Zommerveld in the Free-state and later transferred to the Modderfontein factory in 1997 working at Anfex, Capped fuse, Rail Operations (AOS), Detonating Fuse and the Rietspruit Emulsion Plant.

Daniel recently earned himself an impressive victory of four silver medals at the South African Kickboxing Championships which took place in Cape Town. The national championships are of a high standard and are a good indicator of how fit and competitive one is against various opponents.

While his kickboxing career officially kicked off under the mentorship of Sensei Willem Kruger at the Kempton Park Karate Club in September 2010, Daniel had been preparing for success through his participation in traditional Karate since the age of 8, where he progressed to the level of a 1st Degree black belt.

“My goal is to join the SA Team and take part internationally but this can only be possible with sponsorships from SASCOC and Business SA who

Champion Connor Cottam set to

take the sporting world by storm!

On the ball AEL participated in the Trollope Mining Services (TMS) annual charity golf day, which took place on 5 September at the Kempton Park Golf Club. TMS invites all their suppliers to participate in this event which benefits a different charity each year. This year’s beneficiary is Saffola Primary School.

AEL’s participation was co-ordinated by Sean O’Brien, Regional Manager - SA Coal (Contractors). AEL sponsored the 5th hole. The AEL stand at the 5th hole was manned by Sean O’Brien, Douw van der Walt and Salvatore Zaca. In addition, a 4 -ball team comprising Flip Kotze, Deon De Wet, Anton Vorster and Dennis Oosthuizen entered the competition. Congratulations to the team who displayed their great skill and were placed third.

has played outdoor cricket at

district level since the age of

7, representing the Far North

Region and NSSSC. Connor

attended the U11 Gauteng

Festival in 2012 and was

selected for trials making the

top twenty.

Connor currently plays first

team cricket for his school and

scored his first century this

year. He is an all-rounder and

is considered quite an asset in

the field as well.

Despite having never really

played the game before,

Connor attended U12 Central

Gauteng Indoor Cricket trials

in March this year and was

selected for their invitational side.

The Central Gauteng U12 Lions

attended the Inter Provincial

Tournament held in Durban from

27 June to 2 July and won bronze,

quite an achievement for an

invitational side.

Although Connor has been

playing cricket for longer, he is

also a keen and talented hockey

player and has represented

District 10 of the Southern

Gauteng Hockey Association for

the last two years. His sporting

prowess doesn’t stop there; this

young man also enjoys a round

of golf, serves up aces on the

tennis court and dribbles his way

through the soccer field.

Connor’s ambition is to play

provincial level cricket after

school and eventually represent

his country. We wish him even

greater success!

After building a sustainable and cordial relationship over a long period, AEL is currently finalising a 3-year supply agreement with Trollope,” said Sean O’Brien. It was wonderful to represent AEL while supporting a great cause.

The law regulating occupational health and safety in South Africa is an amalgamation of common and statutory provisions. The law of health and safety at work can be divided into two categories, namely those laws designed to prevent the occurrence of accidents in the workplace and those designed to compensate the victims of industrial accidents.

The Occupational Health and Safety Act of 1993 (“OHS Act”) co-exists with another compensatory statute, namely the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act of 1993. It seeks to provide for the health and safety of persons at work.

The OHS Act and its regulations can be defined as enabling legislation in that it places extensive legal duties on employers and employees to observe all the general duties in the Act and the regulations and comply with all the provisions and safety standards applicable to their activities, report defined categories of incidents to the inspectorate and ensure that a system of safety committees and representatives is introduced and is in operation. The extensive general duties placed upon employers supplement and clarify the employer’s common law duty to take reasonable care of the safety of its employees.

The Act also requires employees to act in a manner which is conducive to safety in the workplace.

Occupational Health & Safety Compliance

The OHS Act can therefore be seen as giving further substance to the right of each person to fair labour practices and to an environment which is not detrimental to their health or well-being, which is protected as a fundamental right in the Constitution.

In keeping with the obligations placed upon AEL Mining Services and each employee by the law, the Group Legal Department in partnership with the Group Health & Safety Manager has published a pocket size copy of the Occupational Health & Safety Act of 1993 with all its regulations, to ensure that all employees are aware of their compliance requirements in respect of the law.
