The Russian astronomer was tall, slender, and blond, and his unlined face belied his fifty-five years — the last ten of which had been spent building up the giant ra-dio observatory on the far side of the Moon, where two thousand miles of solid rock would shield it from the

eletronic racket of Earth. “Why, Heywood” he said, shaking hands firmly. “It’s a small universe... How are you — and your charming children?” “We’re fine,” Floyd replied warmly, but with a slightly distract-ed air. “We often talk about the wonderful time you gave us last summer.” He was sorry he could not sound more sincere; they really had enjoyed a week’s vacation in Odessa with Dimitri dur-ing one of the Russian’s visits to Earth. “And you — I suppose you’re on your way up?” Dimitri inquired. “Er, yes — my flight leaves in half an hour,” answered Floyd.

“Do you know Mr. Miller?” The Security Officer had now approached, and was standing at a respectful distance holding a plastic cup full of coffee.

“Of course. But please put that down, Mr. Miller. This is Dr. Floyd’s last chance to have a civilized drink — let’s not waste it. No — I insist.” They followed Dimitri out of the main lounge into the obser-vation section, and soon were sitting at a table under a dim light watching the moving panorama of the stars. Space Station One revolved once a minute, and the centrifugal force generated by this slow spin produced an artificial gravity equal to the Moon’s. This, it had been discovered, was a good com-promise between Earth gravity and no gravity at all; moreover, it gave moon-bound passengers a chance to become acclimatized.

Outside the almost invisible windows, Earth and stars marched in a silent procession. At the moment, this side of the Station was tilted away from the sun; otherwise, it would have been impossible to look out, for the lounge would have been blasted with light. Even as it was, the glare of the Earth, filling half the sky, drowned all but the brighter stars. But Earth was waning, as the Station orbited toward the night side of the planet; in a few minutes it would be a huge black disk, spangled with the lights of cities. And then the sky would belong to the stars. “Now” said Dimitri, after he had swiftly downed his first drink and was toying with the second, “what’s all this about an epidemic in the U.S. Sector? I wanted to go there on this trip. ‘No, Professor,’ they told me. ‘We’re very sorry, but there’s a strict quarantine until further notice.’ I pulled all the strings I could; It was no use. Now you tell me what’s happening.” Floyd groaned inwardly. Here we go again, he said. The sooner I’m on that shuttle, headed for the Moon, the happier I’ll be.

“The — ah — quarantine is purely a safety precaution,” he said cautiously. “We're not even sure it's really necessary, but we don't believe in taking chances.” “But what is the disease — what are the symptoms? Could it be extraterrestrial? Do you want any help from our medical services?” “I'm sorry, Dimitri — we've been asked not to say anything at the moment. Thanks for the offer, but we can handle the situation.” “Hmm” said Moisevitch, obviously quite unconvinced.

“Seems odd to me that you, an astronomer, should be sent up to the Moon to look into an epidemic.” “I'm only an ex-astronomer; it's years since I did any real re-search. Now I'm a scientific expert; that means I know nothing about absolutely everything.”

His new beginning of our discussion of the universe requires a fuller division than the former; for then we made two classes, now a third must be revealed. The two sufficed for the former discussion: one, which we assumed, was a pattern intelligible and always the same; and the second was only the imitation of the pattern, generated and visible. There is also a third kind which we did not distinguish at the time, conceiving that the two would be enough. But now the argument seems to require that we should set forth in words another kind, which is difficult of explanation and dimly seen. What nature are we to attribute to this new kind of being? We reply,

Black hole /

A black hole is a region of spacetime exhibiting such strong gravitational effects that nothing—not even particles and electromagnetic radiation such as light—can escape from inside it.

Event horizon /

In general relativity, an event horizon is a boundary in spacetime beyond which events cannot affect an outside observer. In layman's terms, it is defined as the shell of "points of no return", i.e., the points at which the gravitational pull becomes so great as to make escape impossible.

Neutron star /

A neutron star is the collapsed core of a large (10–29 solar masses) star. Neutron stars are the smallest and densest stars known to exist.Though neutron stars typically have a radius on the order of 10 km, they can have masses of about twice that of the Sun.

5. A working title was “Voyage Beyond the Stars”. When Fantastic Voyage

was released, Stanley Kubrick reportedly so disliked that film that he did

not want his film to sound anything like it. In the end, “2001” was chosen

as it is the first year of both the 21st century and the 3rd millennium. 6.

There is no dialogue in the first 25 minutes of the movie (ending when

a stewardess speaks at 25:38), nor in the last 23 minutes (excluding end

credits). With these two lengthy sections and other shorter ones, there

are around 88 dialogue-free minutes in the movie. 8. The main Discov-

ery set was built by aircraft manufacturer Vickers-Armstrong inside

a 12-meter by two-meter drum designed to rotate at five km per hour.

It cost 750,000 9. Frank Poole and Dave Bowman watch themselves in

a television interview on BBC 12. This was a play on the fact that, at

the time of production, there were only BBC channels 1 and 2. The

presenter in this scene is Kenneth Kendall, the first newsreader seen

on British TV in 1955. 10. Originally, Stanley Kubrick had Stuart Free-

born create a primitive but more human-like makeup for the actors

playing early man, but he could find a way to photograph them in

full length without getting an X-rating from the MPAA, since they

had to be naked. So Kubrick went with the hairy monkey model in-

stead. With the exception of two baby chimpanzees, all were played

by humans in costume. 11. The entire film contains only 205 spe-

cial effects shots, compared to 350 in Star Wars: Episode IV – A

New Hope and over 2,200 such shots in Star Wars: Episode III – Re-

venge of the Sith. 12. The last movie made about men on the moon

before Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked there in real life.

40 years later, conspiracy theorists insist that this is not a co-

incidence, claiming that all footage of Armstrong’s voyage was

a hoax film directed by Stanley Kubrick using leftover scenes

and props from this movie. 13. HAL 9000 never once says, “Good

Morning, Dave,” despite this line being one of his most recognized

quotations. 14. Aside from the film’s music, no sound is heard in

the space sequences. This is because technically in space, there

is no sound. 15. Originally, HAL was to be called Athena and have

a female voice 16. In the premier screening of the film, 241 peo-

ple walked out of the theater, including Rock Hudson who said

“Will someone tell me what the hell this is about?” Arthur C.

Clarke once said, “If you understand ‘2001’ completely, we failed.

We wanted to raise far more questions than we answered.” 17. The

movie was not a financial success during the first weeks of its theatri-

cal run. MGM was already planning to pull it back from theaters, when

they were persuaded by several theatre owners to keep showing the

film. Many theater owners had observed increasing numbers of young

adults attending the film, who were especially enthusiastic about watch-

ing the ‘Star Gate’ sequence under the influence of psychotropic drugs.

As seen from the Earth, a solar eclipse is a type of eclipse that occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, and the Moon fully or partially blocks ("occults") the Sun. This can happen only at new moon when the Sun and the Moon are in conjunction as seen from Earth in an alignment referred to as syzygy. In a total eclipse, the disk of the Sun is fully obscured by the Moon. In partial and annular eclipses, only part of the Sun is obscured.
