PROMOTING UNDERSTANDING OF RUSSIA

Celebrating its ten-year anniversary this year, the Alfa Fellowship Program is a distinguished international initiative that o ers accomplished young Americans, Britons, and as of this year, Germans, the opportunity to complete a high-level professional development program in Russia. Over the past decade, the Alfa Fellowship Program has succeeded in expanding networks of American, British, German, and Russian professionals, developing greater intercultural understanding, and advancing U.S.-Russian, U.K.-Russian, and German-Russian relations.

Over the course of the program, Fellows work at leading institutions, attend professional seminars, and travel to various regions in Russia and beyond. The Fellowship provides a monthly stipend, health insurance, all program-related travel costs, language training in Russia, and private tutoring in the U.S., U.K., or Germany.

Page 3: Alfa Fellowship Program - 10th Anniversary Booklet

The Alfa Fellowship Program is one of the most significant initiatives of Alfa-Bank. Now celebrating its ten-year anniversary, the program continues to work towards its goal of improving business, economic, and policy ties between Russia and the West by bringing young professionals from the U.S., U.K., and Germany to live and work in Russia for extended periods.

The Alfa Fellowship is the only significant program aimed at providing direct professional experience inside Russia for Western professionals. The program was founded in 2004 and initially sent young American professionals to Russia. It was expanded to include young professionals from the United Kingdom in 2009, and this year will include young leaders from Germany as well.

Thus far, the program has proved a major success, and over 100 Fellows have spent extensive time learning the realities of life and work in modern-day Russia. Fellows are selected from impressive academic and professional backgrounds and are given meaningful work opportunities in Russia with major international corporations, think tanks, foundations, and policy centers. Both Russian and U.S. government officials have commented favorably on the program, and while this is a private initiative, we enjoy substantial cooperation from the U.S. and Russian governments in our implementation. Key British academic institutions have been involved in the administration of the program in the U.K., and both British and German government officials have also found the initiative to be an important one.

As Russia and the West move towards a new chapter in their relationship, it is vitally important that we develop a thorough and accurate understanding of one another based on the new realities which form modern Russian-American, -British, and -German affairs. We believe the Alfa Fellowship Program is one way in which this understanding can be fostered. We are proud to sponsor the program and look forward to its continued growth in the future.

AFP #1 | PROGRAM YEAR 2004

“The Alfa Fellowship Program allowed me to do what I do not think I would have been able to do otherwise – live in Russia for six months at a time of important developments in the country while also working as a journalist at Ekho Moskvy, a radio station singled out in the 2004 U.S. Department of State Country Report on Human Rights Practices in Russia for its ‘highly independent editorial position.’”

“I have to say that the best part of my entire ve months in Moscow were the ‘seminars’ and meetings that the Fellowship o ce arranged with business elite, media gures, political analysts, think-tankers and government o cials. [...] We were truly given incredible opportunities to hear di erent opinions.”

“The program provided a unique opportunity to expand upon my previous Russia regional experience, to enhance my language skills, to acquire work-related experience in a di erent context, and to gain an even broader understanding of the new Russian business environment. This experience changed many of my views and perceptions regarding Russian business and politics and I will continue to draw upon it in the near-term and my longer term career goals and aspirations.”

“I had a very good experience working at TNK-BP. The people I worked with were very capable oil industry professionals, and I had a chance to work with experienced traders [as well]. There is no substitute for living in a place for an extended period of time, interacting daily with locals, and observing the culture from the “inside.” I like that the fellowship does not shield fellows from Russia, the way so many expatriate jobs do.”

“Professionally I have no doubt that [the program] has propelled me. But for me the Alfa Fellowship Program was as much about a journey to understanding Russia, as it was to coming to know myself and aligning the di erent parts of my life. A MAGICAL MOMENT IN RED SQUAREAlfa Fellow COLBY HOWARD (AFP#11, program year 2013-2014) had an extra bit of magic in his fellowship experience. On New Year’s Eve, Colby proposed to his girlfriend Rachel in Moscow’s Red Square. Under the guise of a last-minute Christmas gift, Colby presented Rachel with a custom-made, hand-painted matryoshka doll. On the smallest doll was her great-grandmother’s engagement ring. Needless to say, he received the answer he was hoping for.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN DIGITAL PUBLISHINGJAMES APPELL (AFP#11, program year 2013-2014) worked at Dream Industries/Bookmate during his Fellowship year and was able to attend globally relevant publishing industry conferences, fairs and meetings. One of James’ biggest accomplishments was helping the organization win the Publishing for Digital Minds Conference 2014 Innovation Award, a prestigious London Book Fair prize which recognized Bookmate’s innovative, industry-changing approach to ebook retail and distribution. James spoke on stage with a colleague to an audience of 300 publishing industry executives and digital experts, and helped convince them of their case.

A MARATHON ON LAKE BAIKALANDREW GRENFELL (AFP#9, program year 2011-2012) had a chance to run a marathon

on the frozen Lake Baikal towards the end of his Fellowship year. He sums up the experience: “[It was] probably the most memorable moment of the Fellowship. The lake is a little less than 26 miles wide at the point we crossed it, so we zig-zagged along [ATV] tracks past dramatic natural ice sculptures caused by seismic activity and the regular rest stops off ering tea and coff ee, dried fruits and sweets. The lake was

beautiful and after an hour or so the marathon runners were suffi ciently spaced apart that I could see nobody, only the horizon and the mountains of Buryatia sidling gently out

of the morning haze on the far side of the lake.”

RUSSIAN LANGUAGE CLASSESALLISON GIANNESCHI (AFP#5, program year 2007-2008) remarks on Russian language classes: “I was particularly impressed that we covered not only perennially diffi cult subjects like verbs of motion, participles and gerunds, but also discussed aspects of grammar that I had never even touched on before−even in advanced classes. We also learned the diff erent shades of meaning and connotation between similar words, which greatly improved the precision of our language skills. Additionally, we covered business lexicon and worked on drafts of our resume in Russian and standard business correspondence.”

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS OVER THE YEARS

Page 9: Alfa Fellowship Program - 10th Anniversary Booklet

A NEIGHBOR, A FRIEND, AND A CONFIDANTThe most unlikely and rewarding friendship between JAMES MARSH (AFP#8, program year 2010-2011) and a babushka who lived next door began with a knock and a lemon as a house-warming gift. Over the course of the program, James developed a special bond with Tyotya Masha, an 84-year-old neighbor, with whom he had the most captivating conversations about life in the Soviet Union. “Listening to her was like reading a history book, but so much more vivid… Sometimes we would sit in the dusk of her kitchen and drink cognac, and if she felt like it she would sing folk songs or Soviet romances by heart, with a soft, old voice. Or she would recite stanza after stanza of Nekrasov or Pushkin, never failing once for a word.”

REGIONAL TRIPSDAVID HORN (AFP#7, program year 2009-2010): “The CIS trip to Tajikistan was a fantastic experience. It was without a doubt the most unusual trip I have ever been on. The landscape was incredible, and the experiences of meeting with Tajik offi cials, talking to university students, and exploring the marketplace in Dushanbe were fascinating. The CIS trip was the most important to the overall Alfa experience.”

NADEZHDA MOUZYKINA (AFP#6, 2008-2009): “In one year, and by living in a city that is nothing like the majority of Russia, it is very diffi cult to grasp even the slightest

comprehension of this country. Therefore, the regional trips provided a phenomenal opportunity to acquaint ourselves better with the other parts of Russia that are not like Moscow and to experience the people and the cultural aspects of diff erent groups and ethnicities in this country.”

SPEAKERS, MEETINGS AND PROFESSIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTSTOM HICKERSON (AFP#4, program year 2006-2007): “During the course of [my time] at Microsoft, I saw Bill Gates come to Russia, and I saw the launch for Vista and Offi ce 2007. I worked on the Mid-Year Review for the Russia offi ce, which was used in presentations in front of Microsoft’s Chief Operating Offi cer.”

AMANDA LAHAN (AFP#3, program year 2005-2006): “Our group met with several cultural fi gures, including the director of the Bolshoi Theater. It was very interesting to have a chance to go backstage at the Bolshoi. We were also given the opportunity to attend a taping of Eduard Posner’s television show which was [fascinating]. We also took a tour of a Wimm-Bill-Dann juice factory and attended a talk by Henry Kissinger. [Overall], I greatly enjoyed the seminar program. Not only was it interesting, but I thought that it was very helpful in providing us with diff erent views and opinions on modern life in Russia.”

PROGRAM DETAILS

THE ALFA FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM Despite historic changes that have taken place in Russia over the past two decades and its subsequent emergence into the global community, there are still too few experts in the West with direct, meaningful experience in the modern business, public policy, and cultural environments of Russia. The Alfa Fellowship Program, established in 2004, is designed to address this issue by providing young experts from the U.S., U.K., and, as of this year, Germany, with a high-level professional development opportunity. The program enables Fellows to live and work in Russia for an extended period and to develop a genuine expertise through individualized professional assignments. Now celebrating its ten-year anniversity, the program is supporting a growing number of American, British, and German professionals in becoming well-versed in Russian professional life and society.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION Alfa Fellowship professional assignments are arranged on an individual basis and usually take place in private enterprises, media organizations, think tanks, public policy institutions, law fi rms, and foundations.

In addition to professional assignments, the Alfa Fellowship Program includes language training in the Fellow’s geographical location and in Russia, an orientation seminar in Washington, D.C., regional trips in Russia, and a trip to a neighboring country.
