Gondolatok Albert Levente mûveirõl
“játszani, míg a játék holtsúlyossá komolyodik” (Szilágyi Domokos)
Albert Leventével húsz éve ismerkedtem meg a Tetemrehívás címû témaelemzõ
kiállításon. A kilencvenes évek elején, ott a Gyárfás-házban Levente a tárlat egyik
ban. A számomra szolgálati lakásként és mûteremként szolgáló Gyárfás-házban és
kertjében Levente több munkát, fõleg installációkat készített.
Albert Levente azok közé a háromszéki képzõmûvészek közé tartozik, akikre meg-
termékenyítõleg hatott Baász Imre alkotói és szervezõi munkássága.
Szûkszavú elbeszéléseibõl szerezhettem információkat a város 80-as évekbeli mû-
országos hírnevet szerezve a városnak.
A közép-generációt képviselõ Deák M. Ria, Deák Barna, Kiss Béla, Vinczeffy László
mellett több tehetséges f iatal képalkotó is csatlakozott a Baász-csapathoz: így Ütõ
Gusztáv, Damokos Csaba és Albert Levente is, akik máig a város, a régió meghatá-
rozó, aktív alkotói.
Albert Levente plasztikai érzékenységére felszabadító erõvel hatott Baász szabatos-
sága, kreativítása, a külföld mûvészeti áramlatairól is tájékozott, a teljes világra nyi-
tott erdélyisége. A torzított, utalás-szerû f igurativitás és a struktúra-faktúra játékba
ágyazott absztrakt formakeresés, önkifejezés egyaránt inspirálóan hatottak a pálya-
kezdõ mûvészre. Ezeket a képalkotási „technikákat” híven és csodálatra méltó kö-
vetkezetességgel tudta követni immár negyedszázados pályája során.

Mûvészetének drámaiságot, szorongást kifejezõ alaphangja, a veszélyeztetettséget
sugalló életérzés benne lappang minden munkájában, gyakran a feloldozás eleve
kudarcra ítélt eszközével, az iróniával, fanyar humorral kísérve. Albert mûvészi
attitûdjét találóan fogalmazza meg veszprémi közös kiállításunk krónikájában a
cikkíró: „...Veszprémben kiállított mûvei fémfóliára és lassan befeketedõ fotópapírra
készültek, nyers és drámai gesztusokkal, tudatosan vállalt keménységgel, erõvel.
A gyász, az éj, a vér színeivel dolgozik. A pusztulás világát elénk táró, szürkés-lilán
Albert Levente alapfoglalkozása a fényképészet, ennek kelléktárából veszi képalko-
tó módszerének egyik technikáját: a fényérzékeny, nagyméretû fotópapír és a rea-
gensek: hívó, rögzítõ kölcsönhatásának foltjai hol dekoratívan térképszerû, hol ex-
presszív szaggatottsággal mintázzák a felületet. Ezt az „alapozást” gazdagítja az al-
kotó ötletszerûen kollázzsal, monotípiával, fekete-fehér és színes nyomattal, kézi le-
vonattal. Legújabb kísérletein pedig a mostani, Rozsdasereg címet viselõ kiállításán
a korrodálódó fém lenyomataival. Az egzakt formájú, geometrikus alakzatokban
megjelenõ, különbözõ intenzitású rozsdafoltok néha tömbszerûen, gúlában, néha
szétszórtan alakítják a felületet, kitûnõen ellensúlyozva a teljesen zárt, nyomasztó
fekete-sárga képsíkokat.
Nyugtalanító hangú mûvészetének képsíkban megvalósított témái (Lelet, Alvók,
Szegemberek, Porfestmények, Közelképek) mellett installációi is folyamatosan jelen
vannak Albert mûvészetében. Az 1990-es évek végén a Rezgõk, Tárgyak, Öreg for-
mák sorozatai tûnnek ki érzékenységükkel, f inom iróniájukkal. A Magma kiállítótér-
ben most bemutatott mûveiben is visszaköszönnek az optikai lencsékkel gazdagí-
nómak, a maguk külön életét élik. Egyszerre több sorozaton is dolgozik. Munka-

A variációs, játékos, kreatív folyamatokban azonban kemény belsõ cenzúra mûkö-
dik, ezért a képi megfogalmazás szûkszavú, tömör, lényegre törõ. Az alkotásban
Albertnél a folyamat az elsõdleges. A lényeg, hogy a fényérzékeny papírra felvitt
reagens mit rajzol ki, mivé válik a kompozíció délutánra, estére, mit fog sugallni
holnap?
A kez-
detben néha játékos keresés küszködéssé, vívódó munkává alakul. A mûvek az
egész folyamat kifejezõdései. Eszméletre tett következik, az alkotó, kísérletezõ fo-
lyamatból elõtûnnek a kibontakozó és lezáródó formák, képek, konstrukciók.

tonului.
Consider, cã acest eveniment a reprezentat începutul prieteniei ºi colaborãrii noas-
vitatea creatoare ºi organizatoricã a lui Imre Baász.
ºi Casa, i-a mobilizat pe artiºtii locului, oraºul cîºtigîndu-ºi astfel faimã la nivel naþio-
nal.
talentaþi, cum ar f i Gusztáv Ütõ, Csaba Damokos ºi Levente Albert, care sunt pânã
El a reuºit

ºi dramatice, cu duritate ºi forþã adoptate în mod conºtient.
desc gri-violet ºi negru, roºul cãrniu incandescent printre petele grele ca blocurile
sibile de mari dimensiuni ºi a reactivilor revelator ºi f ixator rezultã pete, care mode-
prezente încontinuu ºi instalaþiile.
tea ºi ironia lor f inã seriile Oscilatoare, Obiecte, Forme bãtrîne. ªi în lucrãrile prezen-
sã corespundã gustului public, sunt literalmente autonome, îºi trãiesc propria viaþã.
ºahul simultan, unde intuiþia instinctivã ºi cenzura interioarã conºtientã îºi are f ieca-
Suntem martorii unui joc serios.
aºteptându-ºi soarta, dacã împlinirea le va f i rama ºi montura sau coºul de hîrtie.
Armata de ruginã
Constatare Dormind Oa-

Oscilatoare Obiecte Forme bãtrîne
Oscilatoare

Thoughts about Levente Albert's Works
“…play, until the game becomes deadly serious” (Domokos Szilágyi)
I got to know Levente Albert on the thematic exhibition entitled Bier-Right twenty
years ago. At the beginning of the 1990’s, there in the Gyárfás-house Levente dis-
played one of the artworks with the most dramatic tone. Its assertive honesty and
varied possibilities of association were gripping: the zoomorphic f igure squirming
among accessories of blood-transfusion, infusion tubes and scaffolds simultaneous-
ly alluded to the drama of martyr cities unleashing the revolution, Timiºoara and
Braºov, to the bloody events from Tîrgu Mureº, to the fate of the spiritual mentor
Imre Baász, deceased with tragic suddenness, in brief, to human “bier-right”.
It is this event that I count our friendship and later professional relation from; we
have had exhibitions in the country and abroad, we have worked together in
creative camps several times. Levente created several works, especially installations,
in the Gyárfás-house and its garden, serving as an off icial residence and studio for
me.
Levente Albert belongs to those artists from Háromszék/Covasna county, who were
profoundly inspired by Imre Baász's creative and organizing activity. From his laconic
stories I could get information on the artistic movements of the town in the 1980’s,
which made Sf. Gheorghe the registered art centre of Transylvania, maybe of the
whole country.
The Medium contemporary group exhibition organized by Baász in 1981, then the
series of thematic exhibitions Drawing-Colour-Form, Bird as well as The House
mobilized the local artists, acquiring national fame to the town. Besides Ria Deák M.,
Barna Deák, Béla Kiss and László Vinczeffy, representatives of the middle-generation,
several talented young visual artists also joined the Baász-group, such as Gusztáv
Ütõ, Csaba Damokos and Levente Albert, who have remained determining, active
creators of the town and of the region up to this day.
Baász's precision, creativity, his Transylvanian spirit well-informed about the interna-
tional artistic trends and open to the whole world exercised an impact on Levente
Albert's creative sensitivity with a liberating force. The distorted, allusive f igurativity
and the search for abstract forms and self-expression embedded in a structure-fac-
ture game equally inspired the artist starting out on his career. He could follow these
image creating “techniques” faithfully and with an admirable consistency all through
his career of a quarter of a century already.
Bier-Right
Drawing-Colour-Form Bird The House
The basic tone of his art, expressing drama, anxiety, the feeling toward life sugges-
ting threatenedness are latently present in all his works, often accompanied by the
means of denouement doomed to failure, irony, bitter humour from the start. His
artistic attitude is properly expressed by the author of the article from the chronicle
of our joint exhibition in Veszprém: “...His works exhibited in Veszprém have been
created on metal foil and slowly blackening photographic paper, with rough and
dramatic gestures, with a consciously assumed harshness and force. He works with
the colours of mourning, night and blood. Congested, greyish-violet and deep black
forms revealing the world of destruction, flesh-red glowing among shades and mo-
nolith-heavy image spots, white flashes of sharp lines, cicatricose ditches strain on
his images.” (Pál Koncz: Journal from Veszprém, 1994)
Levente Albert's main profession is photography, he chooses from its repertoire one
technique of his image creating method: the spots resulting from the interaction
between the light-sensitive, large-sized photographic paper and the reactants: the
developer, the f ixer, shape the surface either with a decoratively map-like, or with an
expressive discursiveness. This “groundwork” is enriched, according to the artist's
ideas, with collage, monotype, black-and-white and coloured imprint, manual im-
pression. Or with the imprints of the corroding metal on his latest experiments in his
present exhibition entitled Rust Troop. The rust spots of various intensity, appearing
in geometrical f igures of exact forms, shape the surface sometimes in blocks, in py-
ramids, sometimes dispersedly, excellently balancing the totally closed, gloomy
black-and-white image planes.
Besides the themes realized in the image plane of his art of a disquieting tone (Fin-
ding, Sleepers, Nail-men, Dust paintings, Closeups), installations are continuously
present in Albert's art. At the end of the 1990’s the series of Flickerings, Objects, Old
Forms distinguish themselves with their sensitivity and subtile irony.
In the works which are now being exhibited in the Magma exhibition hall we also
encounter reminiscences of the motifs of the Flickerings-series, enriched with optical
lenses.
Another important feature of Levente Albert's works is that they do not want to
“appeal” to the viewer, they do not want to satisfy the general public taste, they are
practically autonomous, they live their own life. He works on several series at the
same time. His working method resembles the simultaneous chess, where, along
instinctive intuition and conscious inner censorship, triumph and failure are in deli-
cate closeness. We can witness a serious game. Lots of models of the semi-f inished,
“aborted” creative ideas, sketches, artwoks or those being under formation, in the
process of being conceived, abound on the floor, on the walls and on the ceiling,
looking forward to their fate, whether accomplished in the frame with paspartu or
in the wastebasket.

However, a f irm inner censorship works in the variational, playful, creative processes,
this is why the visual expression is laconic, concise and succint. It is the process that
is of primary importance in creation for Albert. The essence is what the reactant
applied onto the photosensitive paper traces out, what the composition becomes
by the afternoon, by the evening, what it will suggest the next day.
In which direction does it actuate artistic intuition, when should the artist intervene
and interrupt the accidental process, left without control? Where are the boundaries
in the struggle with the material?
Levente Albert's art often shows the peculiarities of the creative process with a pe-
netrating force. Its inner drive, its restless tension release a search, the inspiration is
in search for material and form in order to get shape, to get materialized in front of
our eyes. The search, playful at the beginning, transforms into struggle, into irksome
work. The artworks are the expressions of the whole process. Consciousness is fol-
lowed by deeds, the unfolding and f inished forms, images, constructs emerge from
the creative, experimenting process. Dismantled and constructed again, hundreds
of times, with a thousand times renewing chance to novelty.
