Personal Summary

Adaptable and ambitious Environmental Biology graduate with broad interests, having experience as a Demonstrator/Tutorial Assistant, STEM Ambassador, tutor, conservation volunteer, scuba diver, receptionist, waitress and sales advisor. Enthusiastic and self-driven with excellent team building skills. Comfortable working independently when required.

Education

BSc Honours: Environmental Biology 2016Queen's University Belfast Belfast, Northern IrelandFirst Class Honours with a Research Project in ‘Soil Arthropods in Hedgerows’.

Genetics and Molecular BiologyIntroductory Skills for BioscienceMicroorganisms

In my Honours project I researched how the level of vegetation cover affects the species and abundance of Oribatid mites.

This required excellent organisational, field, laboratory and team working skills due to a large number of specific tasks needing to be done thoroughly and efficiently.

These tasks included sampling from three farms around Northern Ireland; counting microscopic insects; identifying oribatid mite species; processing soil samples; and completing three other written assessments.

A-Levels 2013Grosvenor Grammar School Belfast, Northern IrelandAchieved A grades in Biology and Art; B in Geography.

GCSE 2011Grosvenor Grammar School Belfast, Northern IrelandCompleted 12 GCSEs with two A*s, eight As and two Bs. Passed CLAIT and CLAIT Plus.

Relevant Experience

Demonstrator/Tutorial Assistant 06/2016 to Current

Fly to Salisbury on 3 – 6 June and 10 – 13 July to collect samples for arthropod and nematode extraction. After each sampling trip, I work with a PHD student to identify the nematodes into their five functional groups and the

abundances in each sample. Then I separate the arthropods into their functional groups, identifying some Oribatid mites down to genus level. I train some newer colleagues how to extract and identify the different groups of nematodes.

Green Impact Project Assistant and Environmental Auditing 11/2015 Belfast

Was trained to encourage, motivate and support an assigned Green Impact team in implementing environmental actions in its department or area of work.

Have completed three environmental audits at different departments around Queen’s including the accommodation.

Numeracy Sales Proficient in IT Leadership Budgeting Client Relations

Helped care for young birds in the nursery and guide children during different outdoors activities to educate themabout wetland wildlife.

Young chicks require persistence, patience and diligence to ensure their survival. The outdoor activities during the summer months included ‘Mini Beast hunts’, ‘Pond Dipping sessions’ and ‘Feeding Ducks and

Swans’. Activities including ‘Arts and Crafts’ are my main activities after the summer is over. Expansive knowledge about invertebrates and the wildfowl is essential to give customers the service they have paid for. Requires excellent team working and communication skills since I am working with other volunteers and staff. With large groups of children leadership skills are essential for safety and so all can enjoy the activities.

Community Engagement Volunteer 07/2014 to 09/2014Ulster Wildlife Belfast Represented 'Ulster Wildlife Living Seas' at festivals around Northern Ireland, teaching people about the importance of marine life

and encouraging people to support the charity. Great motivation was needed since some of the events required over an hour of travelling and usually the transportation of

equipment. Assisted with the 'Shore Thing Project', teaching school children how to conduct wildlife surveys on rocky shores. To ensure safety, excellent leadership and team working skills were needed since there are many hazards in these areas.

Additional Experience

Part-time Sales Advisor 07/2015 to 11/2015Winemark Belfast Trained to give customers useful advice when picking wines for different occasions and developed excellent communication skills. Sometimes I have to keep calm under the pressure of a difficult customer or a large queue; I have been very cordial and efficient

under these circumstances.

STEM Ambassador 10/2014 to 06/2016Queen's University Belfast Belfast

Represented students studying Science along with others studying Technology, Engineering and Maths. Responsibilities included encouraging school students to undertake a degree in these areas, conducting tours around

Queens University and assisting with the running of events.

Tutor 01/2014 to 06/2016Queen's University Belfast Belfast

Helped a girl in her first year develop her understanding of the course material. Resulted in her performing well in both winter and summer exams.

Skills

Interests

Soil Research Enjoyed the soil ecology lectures throughout my degree.

Creative problem solving Customer Satisfaction Customer Service Calm under pressure Self motivated

Page 3: Alana Frampton Currriculum Vitae (2)

Achieved a high mark in my Honours Project, I learned a great deal about soil ecology and identifying Oribatid mite species. My current work focuses on nematodes and includes arthropod seperation into functional groups.

Scuba Diving

Qualified as an Ocean Diver with BSAC and completed a 'RYA/MCA Small Craft Basic Sea Survival' course. Dived in Strangford Lough to 20 metres, observing the extraordinary wildlife. Keeping calm and logical is essential since hazards can endanger life.

Animal Care Keeping healthy animals is a passion of mine. Through Castle Espie I learned essential skills and patience when caring for the young birds in the nursery. Owned three Bearded Dragons and currently a Koi pond, both of which require specialised care.

Hiking In 2011 I completed the 'Three Peaks Challenge' in a week. To add to the experience I climbed Slieve Donard a few days before I climbed the three tallest peaks in Britain. Challenging and fulfilling experience.

Travel Learning and experiencing new cultures is fascinating so I have travelled to many countries including Russia and Morocco.
