CORE ENGINEERING SERVICES
AKF provides a full range of professional engineering services to support and enhance the built environment. These include:
Mechanical Engineering Complete heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) design. Systems include air handling and ductwork distribution, BAS, chilled water/condenser water and hot water/steam equipment and distribution, advanced technology systems including high performance energy systems, displacement ventilation, energy recovery, solar and geothermal.
Electrical Engineering Complete building power distribution, including general lighting, medium and high voltage building entrance service design, emergency and standby power generation plants, special grounding systems, uninterruptible power supply systems, clean power systems and renewable energy technologies including photovoltaics.
Plumbing Engineering Complete sanitary, vent, storm, potable water distribution systems and equipment design. Systems include medical grade gas, laboratory grade process, high purity water, laboratory waste and vent, bulk gaseous storage, grey water, rainwater harvesting, solar heating, backflow protection, natural gas utility, waste treatment and neutralization systems.
Fire Protection Engineering Code compliance analysis for fire/smoke detection and alarms, building fire pump, standpipe and sprinkler systems, emergency communications, gas suppression systems, smoke evacuation and control analysis and design.

As projects have become more complex and technically demanding, we have created an unparalleled series of Specialty Services whose experts collaborate with our project team and/or directly with clients to provide their services for the ongoing maintenance and operation of their facilities. Together with our core engineering services, this very broad range of services has allowed the firm to become a single source provider to its clients throughout the life cycle of their buildings.
With over 40 years of experience, AKF Analysis & Testing is on the leading edge of technology with a certified staff compiled from the best in the industry with members from Local 638 and Local 94. Our services assist clients directly or in collaboration with AKF’s specialized disciplines to provide fully integrated solutions. Our highly experienced Vibration Analysts and Testing Specialists focus on building operations such as chiller plants and critical system units.
Building Management Systems
Building Management Systems (BMS) are constantly changing and converging with security, fire alarm and other low voltage building systems. AKF has recognized the need for in-house expertise in controls engineering to provide our clients with the best possible service. To meet this need, AKF has developed a group of mechanical, electrical and computer engineers, many of whom are licensed professional engineers and LEED accredited professionals, and all of whom bring past experience working for Building Management System (BMS) vendors/contractors.
Central Utilities
Energy is increasingly a key consideration in engineering a project. There are choices to be made concerning the types of energy for varying uses, as well as control of first and operating costs and economic incentives. Our specialists bring both vast experience and new, imaginative solutions to assignments. We pioneered the “tri-brid” concept — the use of natural gas, steam and electricity — for powering large-tonnage refrigeration plants. Our solutions are particularly focused on facilitating plant preventive maintenance and offering operational flexibility for the system. Our site utilities services encompass electric distribution, sewer systems, steam, chilled/hot water distribution, water supply, treatment and distribution.
Code Consulting
The rapid evolution of construction codes at the national and local levels presents challenges for design professionals and owners undertaking new and existing building projects. As codes develop in response to advancements in building materials, methods and systems, the importance of code compliance as a central aspect of project delivery is reinforced repeatedly. AKF’s Code Consulting Group provides assistance with code review and regulatory approvals throughout the design and construction process to ensure that code compliance is achieved in all aspects of the project.
Commissioning
Today’s facilities require more complex integration of MEP systems and a higher level of communication, reliability and redundancy than ever. AKF’s Commissioning Group has developed an unparalleled track record in commissioning for new buildings, re-commissioning or retro-commissioning for existing buildings and acceptance verification for any size project. Our expertise includes mission-critical systems, central plants, corporate centers, financial operations, education, healthcare and science/technology facilities. Our ability to work as a team to diagnose a situation and bring corrective measures forward has fostered our reputation as “the engineers’ engineers.”
Energy and Sustainability
AKF is a leader in providing the engineering services needed to deliver high performance systems and minimize building energy use. Our highly qualified staff includes Professional Engineers, LEED AP’s, Certified Energy Managers (CEM), Certified Energy Auditors (CEA), Certified Building Commissioning Professional (SCBCP) and Building Energy Modeling Professionals (BEMP). Together with our sustainability focused subsidiary In Posse, AKF has a broad range of experience in making existing buildings more efficient and new building design more sustainable.
Critical Systems
Data, telecommunications, call centers, co-location sites, internet communications facilities, disaster recovery sites and enterprise control centers must be unfailingly reliable, yet flexible. These sites need to be adaptable and respond to rapid changes in the business environment, advances in technology, and regulatory requirements. AKF brings extensive hands-on expertise in designing, analyzing, testing and maintaining systems that combine high-density utilization with the highest level of reliability. Our skills encompass the coordination of utilities as well as the development of specific systems for electrical distribution and emergency power, HVAC, fire suppression systems, area management and conduit, telecom and fuel system management.

Fire & Life Safety
IT/AV/Security
AKF offers full fire protection design and consulting services to identify risks and design safeguards that aid in preventing, controlling and mitigating the effects of fires. We are highly skilled in applying building and fire code requirements for fire alarm, fire sprinkler and standpipe systems, emergency power and special hazard suppression systems. During the regulatory approval process, we leverage our relationships with building and fire code officials to bring efficient resolutions to our clients’ projects.
AKF Technologies specializes in the design of electronic systems and information technology (IT). Depending on client needs, AKF Technologies integrates its services with AKF’s engineering professionals or works directly with other engineers, architects, owners and consultants to deliver fully coordinated results. Our expertise includes dedicated IT facilities, wired and wireless networks, audio-visual systems and electronic security systems.

Special Inspections
AKF is a registered and accredited Special Inspections service provider, recognized for meeting specific and rigorous qualifications and requirements. This service provides a sophisticated approach to construction quality assurance.
Lighting Design
Combining the art and science of architectural lighting design, our talented lighting professionals are highly skilled in collaborating with architects to realize the desired ambiance, the necessary lighting levels and cost-effective solutions for any environment. We follow a project from inception through construction to preserve the design integrity. Our sophisticated understanding of light and shade, of space and of light sources, day-lighting and control systems, enables us to provide the best solution for each client. Our goal is to balance aesthetics, budget considerations and energy usage to provide successful lighting design solutions.

In Posse LLC
In Posse provides consulting and engineering design services for high performance, deep green projects with a special expertise in net-zero energy. In Posse focuses exclusively on the energy and sustainable design sectors of the built environment for clients in a broad range of market sectors. Working independently or in collaboration with AKF, In Posse provides services addressing all aspects of building performance including modeling and analysis of building systems, engineering high performance building systems, commissioning and occupant education and engagement. In Posse is a subsidiary of AKF Group and is headquartered in Philadelphia, PA with an office in New York, NY.
