Executive Summery
The following report is dedicated to the issue of what factors affect the use of IBS faculty
member’s use of Facebook. Here we have tried to interact with a group of students and
teachers with a small set of questions mostly rapid fire here we see that the basic reason is the
perspective and generation gap that is making us to stick with a traditional ways of teaching,
although there are (minority) some who feel that because there is a need to interact and reach
out to the students outside the classic class room culture , so many teachers are actually using
face book to connect to the students.

I would like to extend warm gratitude towards our Marketing professor Dr. Hyma Ch for
allowing me to work on this survey .I would also like to thank numerous IBS staff members and student
friends who have helped me with patience to analyze that transcripts and help me in putting the
information in order for preparing the report. I truly feel this has been a through and through learning
experience and I shall always try to make the most of such an opportunity

INTRODUCTION
It is very intruding to find that at times the smallest of the things can have a huge implication
and the realization will struck only when you are in the that position or otherwise being informed .the
marketing project deals with it one such situation where in I had the opportunity to get in to the huge
turmoil that is unseen yet very much exists in our society.
Facebook’s just a opportunity to study this very phenomenon that existed ever since there is
an advent of social media in our day to day life in case of “linked in” or “orkut” or “twitter” , in-fact not
only that its we can say rises from the basic way our society functions.
Coming back to our title which is “Factors influencing IBS faculty’s usage of FACEBOOK” .
To understand we shall have to go through some of the basic fundamentals of human behavior , build
our way through public relation ,networking , perception of students , different age groups of
teachers and students, ethnic background and their implication in IBS Hyderabad and then we connect
them to that presence of face book to arrive at a final conclusion

LITRATURE SURVAY
As the report title by and large deals with the mindset, and personal perspective of the teachers
in the present society so I decided to best start from the scratch and pull the fundamental of that calls
for a research . This section we shall try to see through two major things , the first being the record of
student teacher relation in India and match it in IBS since its inception the second os the ways in which
face book came to be a , let’s say matter of Social Quotient
STUDENT-TEACHER RELATION
“History is that evidence that in India there was a very pious guru-shishya culture where
the guru or teacher used to transmit spiritual, Vedic, moral as well as academic teachings to his students.
The word guru itself means a person who can enlighten the individual stuck in darkness (gu means
darkness and ru means light). The objective of the entire education at that time was to transform a blank
mind into a knowledgeable mind, balanced personality with high moral values. Students in return used to
help gurus in their household work and the one who could afford it used to pay money as gurudakshina.
This mutual relationship was based on the intellect of the teacher and obedience of the student. In such
a guru-shishya relationship, everything was left on the shoulders of an able guru who, by acting as a
creator, used to shape his disciples or students.” reference no1
If we critically analyze this culture of submission to your teacher as far as human behavior goes
, we can relate that this is that reason that in India still it is considered an taboo to openly contradict that
teacher and express disagreement. For many places in India it leads to retrogressive or decline in the
connection of students with the teachers .with the advent of internet and globalization there is a massive
so called aping of the westernized cultures , leading to a lot of intercultural practices , the new
cosmopolitan atmosphere we find practices like ours as barriers as a result as I was mentioning there was
a need to connect to the students so that the learning experience could be enhanced from the prevalent
Class room culture .
Along with the various changes the present scenario commands us to do there are some perils that
the changes of this era has brought on us . the whole idea is to be acceptable , if not being followed ; you
should be in line with what people like . the other word is the herd mentality the run for acceptability has
some of the corporate faces as well. The term public relation is used to define those activities that a
company does or gets done through a third party so as to create maintain or improve its brand image. The
reason that in today’s world retrospection is very important is because it matters what people think about
us , it is so much important that if somehow we come to find that the people we are surrounded with are
not compatibles or are not “liking” us or your actions the 9 out of 10 times we end up losing our self-
esteem . There is another thing called Networking and more than often it is mistaken to be as the number
of supporters you have than being the definition of how many people you are connected with or
acquainted to .

ANALYSIS
As per our understanding of the various human values we shall try to see how we are going to set and
select the parameters so that we can analyze the situation further, so here we shall try to see the present
scenario and draw the inference from the situations that we come across. The data collection method was
in the form of primary data as small set of questions were asked to (25) students and (25) teaching
faculties at the IBS campus, some in the form of rapid fire and some in the form of short transcripts. The
compiled results are presented below, for the detailed questions and response rate please refer to the
Appendix in the end.
Present situation
To start with let us see the replies to these selected questions as they were asked to random volunteers
both students and teaching staff at IBS Hyderabad.

Use of face book in our day to day life continued to increase as and when new features kept on
coming in the system. It is evident that there is a substantial amount of infiltration of face book in to life
of specially the students , as mentioned earlier this situation coupled with the need of communicating
beyond the class room walls has lead to the eventual situation where we find that there are many teachers
that have students as their friends , besides it is very easy to stay connected because of easy chat
personalized messages and video conferencing all available in the face book .

Section G 2013-14 Page 13
There are special application that are easily accessible to all the smart phones and even the basic
phones are having the Facebook application so most youngsters are connected 24X7 on face book . The
scenario is such that in this digital age even some of the companies are making a mandatory check about
the Facebook profile of their candidates teachers are more inclined to have a face book account if it is in
their mind to have connection with the students.
Besides anyone who studies marketing knows that social influence is a primary factor in
consumer decision making. If you want to influence others in any meaningful way, you must provide
value within their social circles. Granted, the kind of value faculty may offer students via social media are
questionable. That said, what makes a good friend is often just being there. If you’re not there and not
aware of what’s going on in their lives, you will have a harder time relating to them. But, most of us
teaching in upper-level courses have students in a dedicated major with relatively high overlap with our
interests.
Faculty already on Facebook tend to post comments, articles, and highlights related to the
discipline and that provides an instant connection with our students. This leads to the next reason to
connect with students through social media. We can post job openings, graduate news (like congrats on
new positions), and activities within the major all in one place. A huge plus is that current students can
connect with grads from prior years in the Facebook group for networking purposes.
But not everything works in favor of Facebook many of the faculty believe that there is a need
that a line has to be drawn between the friendship and student teacher relation, and most often than not the
teaching faculty are more matured than the students and one more variable comes in to play that is the
generation gap as a result the faculty find little more than difficult to keep their private life away from
comments of student because of them being on face book.
As mentioned in the questionnaire that most of the volunteers that had participated in the research
questioner were below 50 years of age that being so because almost all the senor faculties are rather
against the use of face book to connect to the students and more over most of them do not have ant face
book account !
There is surprising similarity between the result obtained here at IBS Hyderabad to that of a
similar (Larger scaled) survey that was done at the Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and
Pharmacy last year. The similarity ranges from the response rate to the reasons cited in their reactions,
unfortunately both on the lower side in fact the same reply was quoted “don’t have interest for
maintaining a face book profile” and “I don’t have time for face book”. Even the response rate was
discouraging.
Another factor that influence the use of face book (surprisingly similar to the previous finding) is
the way teachers respond to the friend request , unlike the students who add any one and every one more
so if the request has come from an IBS students is a free entry to the friend list , most faculty members are
not very comfortable in handling the friend request from students , none of them are in the habit of
accepting the request from students they don’t know , even among those who are in the friend list most
faculty members are not in the habit of initiating conversation . It is also very intruding that none of the
teachers ever have the habit of sending friend request to students. Here is where the aspect of age group
Factors affecting IBS faculties use of Facebook
Section G 2013-14 Page 14
comes it is because those on the later age groups have their preconceived notions regarding the way
communication flows and that is in fact a bottleneck.
The following is the simple graphical year wise approximate mapping of how the usage of face book has
increased over the years for communication among the students, among teachers and the interaction that
happens between students and teachers

Inference
As per the collected data and the discussion presented in the previous section we can pic the basic result
of the survey which was conducted in the basis of short interviews with the students and teaching faculty
of IBS can be presented , the following facts as provide the picture for the present generation in india as a
whole and also in the campus of IBS Hyderabad as a whole .
In General
Students LOVE using face book; most are addicted to face book.
Use of face book is more appealing to the younger generation be it academic or non-academic
reason.
Social factors heavily affect the use and perception of face book.
Teachers all over the world are trying to change their image and feel that it is a new way of
communicating to students
Specific to IBS Hyderabad
Wi-Fi in campus main reason for use of social media in IBS
The plethora of Club events can be tracked through face book thereby boosting the use of
93% of students and teachers are having the Smart phones resulting in easy access to Facebook
Teachers are averse in responding to the friend request from students
Teachers not in the habit of sending friend request to the students
Students strongly feel that student-teacher relationship can be boosted through Facebook
friendship.
Generation gap leading to a specific age group of teachers above 50 years of age against the use
of Facebook at IBS

CONCLUSION
The silver lining would most probably be that a few among the teaching faculty really feel that face book
is ideal in keeping them up to date with the generation and with the students as well. So there is a ray of
hope that in the coming years we might see there is enough time and enthusiasm shown by the teachers so
that they can spend time on line on face book and embrace the student teacher relation through face book
for the betterment of the teaching environment
I conclude saying that just like any change need time Facebook use by teachers is probably in the final
gestation period, with more of the young age faculty members having different non-conventional ideas of
teaching . We will surely find greater involvement in the social media in the coming years
