From our President By Ken Carr, President

    THE ATTRACTION OF THE CONCOURS

Last month’s article was about the

excitement produced by the introduction of new

car models and this month we will cover the

enjoyment by car lovers when they participate in

a concours. These two types of events define the

life cycle of classic cars. When Jaguar

introduced its E-type in 1961, it drew a collective

WOW! in the automotive world. Any concours

showing this model since its end of production in

1975 would generate the admiration that is

common to all classic cars: “They don’t make

    them like that anymore!”

The pleasure derived from a concours is

made possible by the extraordinary work of

conservation and restoration carried out by

devoted car enthusiasts. We are fortunate to

have Ivan Ruiz and other restorers in our club

and we salute them for their dedication to this

endeavor. In fact, to undertake and finish a car

    restoration project provides additional

satisfaction to the appreciation of the gleaming

end product: The magic of preserving a fine car

from the past to its initial glory by your own

    efforts.

This March several couples from our club

attended the famous Amelia Island Concours and

had a wonderful time, telling us at the monthly

meeting of the great experiences they shared at

this venue. The fun of admiring the beautiful

cars is enhanced by all the other activities – the

auction, the award presentations, social events,

etc. To say that Amelia Island is just another

concours is like saying that the Kentucky Derby

    is just another horse race.

In October we will have our AJS Concours

d’Elegance, a gathering that provides our

members the fun of a college homecoming in the

fall. In displaying the fine models that have

characterized Jaguar over the years we express

our admiration for our namesake marque.

Indeed, to quote Keats: “A thing of beauty is a

    joy forever.”
