AUSTIN,TEXAS The City of Austin is a vastly transforming metropolis in the heart of central Texas. The city once merely functioned as the locale for the state’s political and educational affairs, but has since grown into a major regional technological and financial center. The 1990s saw a 48 percent increase in population, and growth has been averaging three percent annually since the 2000 Census.

LOCATION Austin, the seat of Travis County, occupies an area of 290 square miles in Central Texas. The eastern part of the city is flatwhereas the western part consists of scenic rolling hills o the edge of the Texas Hill Country. The city is situated on the Colorado River, which is generally regarded as the North/South boundary line. The metropolitan statistical area (MSA) is made up of Travis, Williamson, Bastrop, and Hays Counties.

EDUCATION

Nearly 40% of Austin’s residents hold a bachelor’s degree or higher, compared to a national average of 27%. Over the past 10-15 years, the University of Texas has moved from a strong regional state school to one of the most heralded public universities in the United States. It has numerous academic programs ranked nationally in the top 10 and has some of the most rigorous academic admission requirements in the country.

The Austin area is also home to 29 public school districts, 14 charter schools and 69 private schools. The five largest school districts have all significant praise from many of the national school district rating systems. Newsweek recently published a report of the top 50 public high schools in the country , and the Austin area was awarded with two selections.

Austin was recently eclipsed by Houston as the fastest growing metro area in the US, and remains one of the fastest growing stable employment sectors in the nation. As oil speculation continues, investment dollars earmarked for Texas are re-focused on Austin’s resilient market. Austin is currently the 2nd fastest growing city in the U.S., per Forbes rankings, with 2.51% projected 2015 population growth. Rankings are based on recent growth trends, mid-term growth, long-term growth, and the region’s momentum. Most industries within the Austin MSA are expanding and the jobless rate continues to decline at a steady pace. The area’s well-qualified workforce and relatively low business costs offer resources that high-end employers can scarcely overlook, and position Austin to capitalize on new and emerging technologies. Longer term, Austin will continue to be one of the top performing metros in the nation.
