Message from the Prez . . .All Seasons Enjoyment:

About a year ago I saw this picture of a brand new 2016 ZR1 Corvettepulling into a driveway new a snow storm. The caption said the Vette wasbeing driven by the Corvette Corporate Brand Manager and stated that hebelieved the Corvette was an "All Seasons" source of transportation andenjoyment.

Many of us would take exception to the 'anytime under any conditions'approach, and I know we have different threshold of No-Go with ourfiberglass friends. For some it's the temperature due to tire constraints orlack of a top, for others it's any kind of precipitation cause it's too damn hardto clean it up afterwards. For me it's the slippery streets that accompany ice and snow. Just thinking about LilAnnie in an uncontrolled slide towards a rusty guardrail gives me chills.

So when we heard the snow predictions coming to Wichita, while we were enjoying sunny San Diego, it was ashocking reminder that another season of sketchy weather is about to befall us, and that means conditional useof the Vette and coordinating with Cindy for more frequent occasional use of her car.

Hopefully we will have the predicted great weather for the Veterans Day Parade this coming weekend (Saturday,Nov. 9th - Meet at 10:15 AM. We are in Position # 23, on Main, South of Elm. featured in this way. 11:00 a.m. Kickoff Fly Over. Parade begins at Main & Central proceeds south to Waterman, right on Waterman and then left on Water. The parade disbands behind the WaterWalk building near the oldGander Mountain parking garage. Vehicles going on display will be marshaled into the grass lot behindWaterWalk or into the parking lot across from the Hyatt Parking Garage. Vehicles leaving the parade will stayon Water St, South bound and depart the parade route at Dewey St. Sure hope everyone feels like bringingout their Vettes so we can hear them roar. Our November General Membership Meeting is this Wednesday, Nov. 6th, 6:45 PM. Two key things will behappening that evening:

1) Presentation of the Funds raised by our Corvette for Caleb Charity Raffle Drive2) Election of three (3) new Executive Board Members for a two-year term

In an organization with at least 174 listed memories it is both surprising and concerning that as of this writing notone single individual, neither woman or man, has agreed to submit their name for nomination. I'm sure it mustbe because they simply don't understand the value of volunteering and its many benefits.

"One of the great ironies of life is this: He or she who serves almost always benefits more than he or she who is served." - Gordon Hinckle"Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth." - Muhammad Ali

The power of volunteering has been documented for over 2,500 years, however a slew of recent research isshedding even more light onto its surprising benefits. Science now proves what great leaders and philosophershave known for years. Here are five surprising benefits of volunteering:

1. Volunteering time makes you feel like you have more time. Wharton professor Cassie Mogilner wrote inthe Harvard Business Review that her research found those who volunteer their time feel like they have more ofit. This is similar to other research showing that people who donate to charity feel wealthier. Ms. Mogilneroffered: "The results show that giving your time to others can make you feel more 'time affluent' and lesstime-constrained than wasting your time, spending it on yourself, or even getting a windfall of free time."

2. Volunteering your skills helps you develop new skills. In my experience, skills-based volunteering is anexcellent opportunity to develop talents to help you get ahead in your career. In fact, an article in Stanford SocialInnovation Review called skills-based volunteering overseas "the next executive training ground." AtMovingWorlds, they've found that skills development in technical and leadership-related areas is the primaryreason corporations invest in international skills-based volunteering programs.

3. Volunteering your body helps you have a healthier body. A Corporation for National & CommunityService report noted: "Research demonstrates that volunteering leads to better health… those who volunteerhave lower mortality rates, greater functional ability, and lower rates of depression later in life than those who donot volunteer." The fact that volunteering has been proven to make you healthier is reason enough to engage inpro bono activities. (For more information on this, read "Can Volunteering Lower Your Risk of Heart Disease?")

4. Volunteering your experience helps build your experience. We consistently see this with highly skilledprofessionals like investment bankers and business consultants. Also, volunteering in a new industry will giveyou knowledge to help you switch fields. And if you want to move from the corporate world to the nonprofitsector, volunteering first can help prove your commitment.

The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and Next Avenue have published articles about how volunteeringcan help you earn your next job. As the Journal wrote: "According to the survey of 202 human-resourceexecutives, skilled volunteer work - such as helping a nonprofit with its finances - makes job applicants lookmore appealing to hiring managers."

5. Volunteering your love makes you feel more love. Admittedly, love is a hard thing to measure. But whenresearchers at the London School of Economics examined the relationship between volunteering and measuresof happiness, they found the more people volunteered, the happier they were. Volunteering builds empathy, strengthens social bonds and makes you smile - all factors that increase the feeling of love.

So how can you get started volunteering to help keep the Air Cap going strong? Just send Mike a note or givehim a call. We are gonna make this as easy and enjoyable as possible for you -

"Come On! Jump In! The waters fine in every season!"

Old Business:

Nominating Committee has not been able to find any volunteers to serve on the Executive Baord.

Discussion ensued regarding options proposed by Marc. Those suggestions included:

Reduce number of Board members

Reduce Bard meeting to quarterly

Absolve Board members from paying annual dues

Hold Board meeting prior to regular meetings

Discussion revealed very reasonable objections to each of these suggestions. Mike asked that each of us current Boardmembers prepare a statement to address the body at the November 6 regular meeting to address this predicament andperhaps compel some participation.
