Why Vote?

Voting is a special right that we as Americans enjoy.

It allows us to have a say in what our government is doing.

This includes how our money should be spent. (Schools, parks, etc..)

If you don’t vote who are you to complain?

In groups discuss the following questions, brainstorm ideas, one person in group is recorder.

1.) Why do you think that older Americans might be more interested in government policies than younger Americans?

2.) What political issues motivate younger citizens to get involved with public life? Give examples.

3.) Some countries increased voter participation by holding elections on Sundays. What other methods can you suggest to increase turnout?

4.) In some countries voter participation is mandatory. What effect might this have on elections? Do you think this is a good way to increase citizen participation in elections?

There are a total of 538 electoral votes

-The District of Columbia is not a state but is given 3 electoral votes.-A candidate must have 270 electoral votes to win the Presidential election.-If no single candidate gets the required 270 electoral votes then the House of Representatives votes to decide the President.

If you get the most votes in that state you get ALL of their electoral college votes

***It is possible to get more votes overall in the election from the entire country and NOT be elected President
