2. Mali
Before talking about the rulers of Mali lets just get to know Mali a little bit.
Mali is nearly twice the size the size of Texas thats pretty big.
Mali is surrounded by 8 other countries: Algeria, Niger, Burkina Faso, Cte dlvoire, Senegal, Mauritania, and Guinea.
Most of Northern Mali is contained by the Sahara ( the major desert on the planet).

4. Sundiata
Sundiata was a ruler of Mali when Mali began to rise to its power. Sundiata was the son of a previous king of Mali . When Sundiata was boy, Mali was conquered by a powerful king and treated the people of Mali poorly , growing up Sundiata hated him when Sundiata reached adulthood he built a huge Army and won freedom for his country ,then established to conquering many nearby kingdoms, including Ghana. After Ghana conquering Ghana, he took over the gold and salt trades, he also worked on improving the agriculture in Mali, he also introduced a new crop cotton. When things got tough, in legendit says that Sundiata sent some soldiers to work in the fields. Sundiata conquered all of Malis enemies the soldiers didnt need to fight so they worked in the fields. With Sundita guidance Mali grew into a successful kingdom. Sadly Sundita died in 1255, but his sonwas the next ruler.

6. Mansa Musa
Mansa Musa was thee most famous Muslim king. Under Mansa Musa skillful leadership Mali reached its height in wealth, power, and fame in the 1300s. Mansa Musa ruled for about 25 years. During his time his army captured many important trade such as Timbuktu, Gao,and Djenn(these cities became apart of Malis empire), also duringMansa Musa s rule he made an important pilgrimage to Mecca known as the hajj, on this hajj Mansa Musa took 60,000 men and took at least 100 camels carrying 300 pounds of gold to Mecca , when Mansa Musa got to Mecca he made such a good impression on the people he made Mali famous throughout Asia, Africa, and Europe. When people started to move to Mali for Mecca,Mansa Musa wanted to be able to read the Quran therefore he the Arabic language the main language. To promote this spread he hired Muslim architects to create mosques throughout the empire.

8. Songhai
We already know Mali, so lets get to know Songhai
Songhai was a rival of Mali .
By the 1300s Songhai became rich powerful enough to draw Malis rulers attention.
As soon Mali became week Songhai rose against Mali and won there freedom,

10. Sunni Ali
Sunni Ali became ruler of Songhai in 1464. Before Sunni Ali became ruler Songhai was poorly run and disorganized so he spent his time getting Songhai back on its feet. Most of the land Ali added to Songhai was part of Mali. In 1468 Mali asked Ali to help them fight the Tuareg invaders Ali agreed but once he driven off the Tuareg he took the land for himself. Sunni Ali taught all people in his empire to work as a team .Sunni also participated both Muslim and local religions. Sadly Sunni Ali died at year 1492, his son Sunni Barutook his place as ruler.

When Sunni Barusfather died he took his place. But Sunni Baru was not a Muslim and most of the people were Muslim so they were afraid the Sunni Baru didnt support the Islam they would lose there power and empire so they rebelled against Sunni Baru.
13. Muhammad True
Muhammad True also known as Askia the Great. Askia the Great ruled Songhai for about 35 years, he was about 50 years old when he started. Askia the Great overthrown Sunni Baru. Askia worked on supporting education, he flourished his empire with schools, university, and libraries. People all around the world came to study math, science, law, grammar,and medicine. Askia supported Islam , formed 5 provinces, and created departmentsto over see certain tasks to maintain order.
