Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy

A deep-rooted consideration for the natural world infuses each and every Abercrombie & Kent journey.

A&K believes passionately that travel should both respect the natural environment and benefit the indigenous peoples whose lands we visit. For over 30 years, A&K has been intimately involved in the support of these communities, their environments and their ecosystems.

Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy, guided by A&K Vice Chairman Jorie Butler Kent, facilitates our commitment to socially and ecologically responsible travel worldwide, as well as helping our guests to become actively involved in these efforts. Every A&K office plays an important hands-on role in its community, proudly sponsoring projects directly benefiting the local people and environment.

For example, in Kenya guests at Sanctuary Olonana are invited to plant an indigenous tree to aid in reforestation of the Masai Mara. In Tanzania, the Serengeti Cheetah Project at Sanctuary Kusini is helping ensure the sustainability of this precious species by engaging guests in a ‘cheetah watch’ and photographic evidence of key sightings during game drives.

In Zambia, villagers at Nakatindi are cultivating a vegetable garden which generates an income from its produce and supplies local lodges.

AKP and Rhino Conservation Botswana in partnership with the Botswana Defence Force and the Department of Wildlife have facilitated the translocation of up to 20 rhino into Botswana’s Moremi Reserve.

In Jordan, A&K works with Madrasati (My School) and offers support to rehabilitate Balquees School in Amman improving safety and the learning environment, and providing field trips to local sites.

A&K in Morocco, supports Al Karam, a home in Marrakech that houses street children in emergency situations and provides activities for children living on the street.

Programmes marked with a represent opportunities for travellers to be personally involved in these projects.

14 Africa

AfricaRich in natural treasures, Africa has long attracted adventurers, traders, explorers, intrepid travellers and trailblazers alike. Its landscapes have inspired artists and writers for centuries and its tribal culture is colourful and intriguing in equal measure.

For today’s traveller, Africa’s main allure is its wildlife and a safari is the only way to see it. From the huge wildebeest and zebra herds of the Serengeti, to the playful impala of the Okavango Delta, big cats in the Sabi Sand and primates in the forests of central Africa, the desert species of Namibia and the shy nocturnal animals of the South Luangwa, the diversity is extraordinary and the attractions differ from country to country.

Africa is the home of A&K and with 55 years’ experience there the company knows it inside out. There are many destinations to choose from and ways to see the game – on foot, by 4WD, from the water and from the air. You’ll be amazed and delighted by what this continent has to offer.

When to Go

South Africa is an exceptional destination year round. Namibia also offers perennial attractions with the dry months of September and October peak times for wildlife. Kenya and Tanzania have outstanding game viewing and spectacular scenery year round, the region’s greatest attraction being the annual wildebeest migration between the Serengeti and the Masai Mara (June – September). Botswana is best visited between May and October, whilst prime game viewing time in Zambia and Zimbabwe is April to November. Travel is best in Uganda and Rwanda between June and September, Madagascar between June and November and Mauritius April through November. Prime time to visit central Ethiopia is October to April.

THE GARDEN ROUTE

THE CAPE WINELANDS

MADIKWE GAME RESERVE

South Africa’s famous Garden Route is one of the world’s great coastal drives stretching 210 km east from Cape Town along the continent’s southern coastline. The waters of the Indian Ocean glisten and at certain times of the year are home to migrating whales and dolphins. There’s a good choice of boutique accommodation which is luxurious and well located allowing easy access to local attractions. It ’s best done over four days with an A&K driver/guide from beginning to end or can also be explored on a self-drive itinerary.

Famous for its wines and gourmet produce the Cape Winelands is a picturesque region just outside Cape Town. We recommend visits to our handpicked vineyards, providores and producers where guests taste the epicurean delights on offer and hear from the experts about what makes each item so special. There are many wines to sample with a wine ambassador on hand, Belgian chocolates, cheese and a Cape Cuisine walking tour.

For an unforgettable family holiday, a safari ticks all the boxes. There are experiences to suit child, parent and grandparent alike with wildlife encounters and tailored activities all part of the excitement. Madikwe Game Reserve is an excellent choice for families because of its malaria-free status, its proximity to Johannesburg and the outstanding bush experiences it offers with game drives by day and night, junior tracking activities, animal identification and well-appointed lodge accommodation.

Wings over Zambia

Combine an outstanding wilderness experience in the South Luangwa, home of the ‘walking safari’ and widely considered one of Africa’s finest and most unspoiled wildlife reserves, with an exciting contrast in the Lower Zambezi. You’ll see game from safari vehicles, get up close on foot and float gently past herds which frequent the river and its banks. Unspoilt natural beauty and abundant game make these two areas an ideal destination for an African safari.

Day 1: Arrive Lusaka. An A&K welcome to the Zambian capital and transfer to your boutique hotel. Latitude Fifteen Degrees (Luxury Suite)

Day 2: Lusaka – South Luangwa National Park. Fly* to Mfuwe in the east of the country. You are met and transferred into the spectacular South Luangwa National Park, a vast reserve covering 9,050 km² (B,L,D). Sanctuary Puku Ridge Camp (Luxury Tent)

Days 3-4: South Luangwa. Two days to explore the magnificent South Luangwa. This world-renowned wildlife haven supports large populations of Thornicroft’s Giraffe, and herds of elephant and buffalo often several hundred strong. The vegetation too is diverse and keen spotters are rewarded with incredible sightings of lion, elephant, giraffe and any number of antelope from bushbuck and puku to Greater Kudu and impala. Each day enjoy a morning and afternoon game drive with sundowners and a thrilling night drive. Or, as the South Luangwa is ‘home’ of the walking safari, head out on foot with your guide to see the bush from a different perspective (B,L,D). Sanctuary Puku Ridge Camp (Luxury Tent)

Day 5: South Luangwa – Lower Zambezi. Fly* via Lusaka to the Lower Zambezi National Park, an area of stunning wilderness. Your camp overlooks an expanse of narrow channels and low set reed islands teeming with game, with the magnificent Zambezi escarpment as the backdrop. Acquaint yourself with the local wildlife on an afternoon game drive (B,L,D). Sausage Tree Camp (Signature Tent)

Days 6-7: Lower Zambezi National Park. Discover the Lower Zambezi over the next two days. An early morning canoe safari is one of the most serene (and exciting) ways to explore the Zambezi River. A half day game drive will bring close encounters with elephant, buffalo, lion and possibly

the endangered wild dog, and a guided walking safari will highlight the smaller creatures of the bush (B,L,D). Sausage Tree Camp (Signature Tent)

Baraza Resort & Spa Zanzibar Chimpanzee, Mahale National Park

Home for over centuries to Arabs, Africans and the British, the beautiful ‘Spice Island’ of Zanzibar has a colourful history of slaves, spices and sultans. Today it remains an exotic mix of many cultures with Stone Town at its heart. The alleyways and market place of old Stone Town are fascinating places to explore with a visit to a local spice plantation while the nearby white sand beaches and turquoise blue sea beckon.

For a high adrenaline adventure, test your skills of endurance and conquer the highest mountain in Africa, Mt Kilimanjaro. At 5895m it is the tallest free-standing mountain on earth but the climb requires no prior mountaineering experience. We recommend a week long journey along the scenic Machame Route. A&K’s Kilimanjaro operation offers the highest levels of safety and expertise and all its porters are endorsed by the International Porter Protection Group.

For a unique primate experience head to the Mahale Mountains National Park in the far west of the country. It’s one of the best places on the continent to see chimpanzees in their natural habitat. We recommended spending two days tracking these engaging primates through the tropical forest on the edge of Lake Tanganyika. A guide joins you as you locate the families in the forest and spend time in observation.

Wild and off the beaten track, southern Tanzania has plenty of appeal. From the remote Ruaha and Selous wilderness areas to the pristine Swahili coast this is a journey for return visitors or the more adventurous safari-goer. Experience unspoiled natural wilderness, dramatic landscapes plus an enormous diversity of plant, animal and birdlife. On safari, stay in unfenced camps where animals are free to pass through as they please and a rustic chic hideaway on the coast.

After a dusty safari on the savannah, escape to the endless white sandy beaches and turquoise waters of the Kenyan Coast. Coconut palms sway in the breeze, tropical colours abound and the warm waters of the Indian Ocean beckon. Coral reefs provide excellent diving and there’s water sports aplenty plus the unique Swahili culture and cuisine.

Forming part of the 56,000 square kilometre Ewaso ecosystem, Laikipia has a wildlife population density comparable only to that of the Masai Mara including good numbers of big cats, buffalo and more. A conservation success story, Laikipia is home to half of Kenya’s black rhino, the second largest population of elephants in Kenya and the globally threatened Grevy’s zebra.

Located in the dry northern reaches of Kenya, Samburu has a raw and rugged landscape with the winding Uwaso Nyiro River at its heart. The river banks are flanked by doum palms and acacias trees and in the deeper parts of the river are pods of hippos. The park is home to unique desert-adapted species including the Reticulated giraffe, Somali Ostrich, Grevy zebra and the graceful gerenuk. It is also home to the colourful Samburu tribe.

By far the biggest of Kenya’s national parks, Tsavo sprawls across more than 22,000 square kilometres of flat plains, scorched earth and scattered bush in the southeast of the country. By virtue of its immense size, it’s possible to traverse the wilderness for hours without seeing another vehicle. There is, however, good wildlife: from raptors to buffalo, Grant’s gazelle, as well as the iconic herds of elephant – the park is home to more than 10,000. In the west are hippos and crocodiles, plains game and predators plus extraordinary birdlife.
