Some technical aspects of AFM

• AFM is manufactured by Dryden Aqua in Scotland • AFM is an active filter media, with a high negative

zeta potential hydrophobic surface and catalytic properties

• AFM mechanically removes most particles down to 5 microns.

• AFM high zeta potential makes it adsorb micron and sub-micron particles as well as dissolved organics directly from solution

• Works synergistically with cationic floculents and polymers

• AFM rejects bacteria growth, AFM will not become a biofilter, and the media will not be subjected to bacteria coagulation.

AFM active filter media

AFM is an Active Filter Media and direct replacement for sand in all types of sand filters, clean water and wastewater.

AFM does not need to be replaced, the media may be used for the life of the filter, and can be recycled and used again.

AFM does not bio-coagulate or experience worm-hole channelling. Drinking water filter performance improves by approx 30%, tertiary treatment filters work much better.

Performance is stable predictable

AFM® is certified under Regulation 31 of the UK Drinking Water inspectorate, AFM® is compliance with European Water Directive (98/83/EC) & (80/778/EEC) and is manufactured under ISO9001-2008 quality control procedures in accordance to BSEN12902 and BSEN 12904.

AFM performance for the treatment of sewage effluent compared against different technologiesIndependent tests conducted by Spanish Water Company and reported in Technology del Agua , December 2009, page 47.

AFM media in a pressure filter out-performed all other technologies, some of which were 10 times the cost

. AFM filter media, run phase performance and back-wash frequency is stable and predicable. No by-passing or channeling of waste water through the bed.

Biofouling of sand and AFM

• Electron micro graphs of sand and AFM

• Sand grains have 100% bacteria coverage after 3 days

• AFM stays free of biofilm, even after 5 years in sewage effluent

• Alginates excreted by bacteria coagulate the sand and cause wormhole channeling. This does not happen with AFM

Filtration AFM verses sand filtration

What goes into a filter must come out in the back-wash

The graph opposite is the back-wash profile for identical sand and AFM filters after 10 weeks.

The profile shows that 30% more solids are back-washed out of the AFM. 30% more solids have there been removed during the run phase

AFM performance is maintained while sand filters continue deteriorate with time. Data from trials conducted by Suez Lyonnaise des Eaux

30% improvement after 10 weeks, 50% after 52 weeks.

AFM wastewater operational criteria

• The performance of any media bed filter will vary indirectly proportionally to the flow of water, so it is always best to run the filter at the slowest possible run phase water flow.

Optimum conditions

Run phase water flow <5 cubm/hr/sqmAir purge flow >95 cubm/hr/squmBack-wash water flow >55 cubm/hr/sqm

Dryden Aqua system treat waste water by extended diffused aeration SBR ( sequencing Bio-reactors). After the biological process a “One Pass” AFM filtration with pre-coagulation and flocculation using Dryden Aqua ZPM, followed a second ZPM with chlorine injection or disinfection by Dryden Aqua electron abstraction system, will produce class 1 irrigation water from waste water and in most cases it will be in compliance with the European dinking water quality directive.
