Following up on the organization’s early Primary Election endorsement last year, the Illinois AFL-CIO endorsed Tammy Duckworth for U.S. Senate and state legislative candidates who have stood up against Rauner’s attack the middle class during its meetings Tuesday in Springfield.

Duckworth has a 97 percent voting record on Labor issues and is challenging Mark Kirk for U.S. Senate this fall.

More than 100 leaders and activists from all areas of the state also voted to support General Assembly candidates that have stood up to Gov. Bruce Rauner’s attempts to gut unions and undercut economic security programs for the state’s middle class.

“The members spoke loud and clear today,” Carrigan said. “Working families are supporting candidates that will stand up for the middle class and against more giveaways for the wealthy and corporate CEOs.”

The Illinois AFL-CIO, which represents 1.5 million union household registered voters, also unveiled its massive Labor 2016 mobilization effort that will make more than three million phone calls and knock on 200,000 doors in targeted districts.

“We will talk to union families and their neighbors at worksites, on the phones and at the doors,” Carrigan said. “We will make sure voters understand what is at stake this November.”

The 2016 Midwest School for Working Women is scheduled for the week of July 24-28, 2016 at Roosevelt University in Chicago. The school will be hosted jointly by the Illinois Labor History Society, which empowers today’s workers by connecting them to labor history and the University of Illinois’ Labor Education Program, which builds the capacity of unions and worker organizations to address a challenging political and economic environment.

The Midwest School for Women Workers brings women together to develop leadership skills, understand the challenges and issues facing the labor movement, and learn from one another. It has been held annually since 1976 and equips women to be more active and effective union and workplace leaders and to build solidarity among women workers.

Participants will register for a Beginner or Advanced Core Skills Building Track, as well as attend local labor history tours and plenary sessions on current economic policy issues affecting unions and workers in the U. S. and globally. The cost is $650 for single room tuition or $400 for commuters. A limited number of partial scholarships are available for women whose organizations are unable to pay the full costs of tuition. For more information, go to www.illinoislaborhistory.org/msww2016.

Hundreds of working people protested Gov. Bruce Rauner in Ottawa this week, forcing him to change the location of his media event.

Protestors circled the LaSalle County Courthouse after it was moved there because of protests at the Ottawa City Hall.

Union families and community members there were protesting Rauner holding the state’s budget hostage to his anti-worker demands.

“Governor Rauner came to the Illinois River Valley to send a message, but his message was drowned out by the unified voice of Labor,” said Steve Conrad, President of the Illinois Valley Building Trades.

Several unions and community groups participated including the Illinois Valley Building Trades, the Illinois Valley Central Labor Council and local unions.

Jim Lockhart of IBEW Local 176 was summed up in My Web Times quote:

“We are here to let the governor know he can’t hold the budget hostage against the working people of Illinois. All of us here are against the governor’s stance against labor unions and prevailing wages. We want him to move past those issues and get the budget done.”

Illinois Working Together (IWT) is a diverse coalition of labor organizations that is defending all working families from anti-worker attacks. Co-chaired by the Illinois AFL-CIO and the Chicago Federation of Labor, IWT is working to highlight the damage the Governor has caused to Illinois since he took office and the potential economic devastation of his “Turnaround Agenda”. Illinois Working Together believes that Governor Rauner’s wrong priorities seek to harm hardworking families and communities throughout Illinois while protecting the wealthiest. The Coalition’s goal is to stand up and fight back against the governor’s political attacks and threats - and protect the vital services all Illinoisans rely on.

What will IWT do?Over the coming weeks and months, IWT will be working with you, your union members, and men and women across Illinois to spread the message about Bruce Rauner’s harmful agenda. IWT will be organizing outreach to make sure that middle class voices are heard. For example, IWT worked along with other organizations in 2015 to coordinate the successful push back against Gov. Rauner’s local right-to-work initiatives in municipalities around the state.

How can I get involved?IWT will not be successful without your help. This coalition is only as strong as the men and women in it. We need your help to get our message out about Bruce Rauner’s radical agenda and the harm he’s causing right now.

There are three ways to get involved right now:

“Like” Illinois Working Together on Facebook at 1. facebook.com/illinoisworkingtogether

Follow Illinois Working Together on Twitter @2. IllinoisWorking

Sign up for IWT email at illinoisworkingtogether.org3.

Once you follow IWT online, please like, share, and retweet messaging from the coalition – these are messages we know resonate with Illinoisans and we need your help to spread the word.

Labor Coalition Illinois Working Together To Stand Up To Rauner

Video of Springfield Rally on IWT website

On May 18, 2016, more than 10,000 working men and women descended on Springfield. Their message was clear – Gov. Rauner needs to drop his “Turnaround Agenda”, stop attacking the hardworking families of Illinois, and pass a responsible state budget that makes Illinois work for all. The march and rally, organized by Illinois Working Together, brought labor, community, and religious groups together to demand that Gov. Rauner stop hurting Illinois.

Illinois Working Together has released a highlight video of the “Rauner is Hurting Illinois” march and rally at their website www.illinoisworkingtogether.org. Now you can relive that sunny day in May by watching the video, which includes including portions of each powerful speech and press coverage from across Illinois and the nation.

The video can also be used to show your members the hard work you and your union are doing to push back against the Rauner Agenda. Organized labor in Illinois is in a fight for its life, and the May 18 rally was proof positive that it will not go down quietly.
