WHAT ARE THE FACTORS THAT PROMOTE OR ERODE UNITY

AMONG PEOPLE AND NATIONS ?

Page 3: AFGHANISTAN :unity?

What is Unity ?The definition of unity is a state of being or working together as one .Unity is a very fragile state of being it requires balance ,if not total chaos or conflict could occur .Things such as religion , sports , and similarities promote unity among people and nations .Things such as racism ,war, differences , and sexism erode unity among people.

Sports and Unity

Sports promotes unity among people because it is common ground most people around the world .Playing sports , as well as watching sports establishes a sense of unity between teams and their fans . The most popular sports in Afghanistan include baseball ,cricket ,futbol ,and buzkashi

Unity and Religion

THIS IS THE QURAN ,IT IS THE HOLY BOOK OF THE MUSLIM RELIGION .

99% of the citizens of Afghanistan are Muslim. The Muslim religion promotes unity by promoting peace among people and nations .

SimilaritiesSimilarities promote

unity by it gives people a reason to come together . Similarities are what make people come and stay together. Almost all the factors that promote unity could go under the category of similarities .

This is the flag used in Afghanistan as a sign of unity

Sexism :Eroding UnityIn Afghanistan there are many cases were women are treated

inferior to women .After the Taliban’s rise to power, women and girls were systematically discriminated and marginalized ,and their human rights were violated. This resulted in the deteriorating economic and social conditions of women and girls in all areas of the country , in particular in areas that were under Taliban control. Women and girls continued to be severely restricted in their access to education ,health care facilities ,employment .For a very long time women were excluded from all forms of government . For over 25 years Afghan women have suffered from all kinds of violence even in government . Sexism is ignorance and a the opinion that your gender is superior to the other .Sexism erodes unity ,it has eroded unity in Afghanistan for years ,it makes it so that the nation could never be completely unified and become one because not everyone is being treated fairly .

Page 8: AFGHANISTAN :unity?

Racism :Eroding Unity Racism is an ignorant belief that your ethnicity is superior

to another .In Afghanistan people who do have any background or who are not descendents of natives from the country are sometimes terrorized because of that .Some Americans and people of other ethnicities who have lived there temporarily have stated that they have received hate mail and have been threatened over the phone ,computer , and in some cases face –to –face . Racism makes it very hard to become unified because it makes people not want to come together because of the color of someone skin or their background .

Contradiction For years Afghanistan has been

divide against itself because of other people’s beliefs and ideas that contradict other people beliefs and ideas .This has divided Afghanistan by people who strongly believe in their ideas or beliefs will not try to come together with someone who strongly believes otherwise . An example of this is that the Al –Qaeda group in Afghanistan strongly believes that Western culture and beliefs and the culture and beliefs of other countries need to be destroyed because they don’t want their way of life to “infect “ their of life over there.

This is a picture of two members of the Al –Qaeda group in Afghanistan .

A Country in Conflict The three previous slides are all subjects that may also

start wars. Afghanistan has been in a civil war since April 27 , 1978 and has still not ended as of today .Afghanistan’s civil war started when Communist’s People’s Democratic Party of Afghanistan took power in a bloody military coup known as the Saur Revolution . The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan to keep the P.D.P.A. in power .Eleven years later (1989 )the Soviet had to withdraw its troops .14,453 people have lost their lives during this time of war .

A Country in Conflict Another conflict in Afghanistan

,Al Qaeda group are in huge populations. Al –Qaeda is a militant Islamist group founded by Osama bin Laden . Al-Qaeda has attacked civilian and military targets in various countries such as the 9/11 attacks on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon .Al-Qaeda has brought violence into the country of Afghanistan .This erodes unity there by it promotes acts of violence towards one another as a nation .

The is a picture of Osama bin Laden ,he was arrested and killed by U.S. Navy Seals recently .

Page 12: AFGHANISTAN :unity?

DifferencesDifferences as a whole erode unity by it

gives people a reason to not come together and not to set aside their differences. The cases of sexism ,racism, different beliefs and ,ideas are all differences that can tear a group of people or nation apart .

SummaryThis project has shown the importance of

unity ,when a country or group of people of divided against themselves they could never be as strong as they would be if they were united. What really erodes unity is the differences among people and what really promotes unity is the similarities or common ground there is amongst people . The similarities create unity by it connects people in a way so that the want to put their differences aside and come together as one .
