Page 1 23rd March 2014: The Persons With Disabilities (PWD- MQM) arranged a Carnival/family festival at Lal Qila Ground. Team AEIRC joined the carnival and placed a health awareness and counseling stall, in order to provide people with free assessment of BP, BMI and BMR. The carnival was visited by many key officials, media agencies, students, special children and working officials of varying fields. It was an effort to promote a healthy society and to make Pakistan a nation comprising of individuals who are self aware and are keen to take the mission of awareness forward. AEIRC being a strong and keen supporter of awareness programs, joined this event wholeheartedly in order to play their part in spreading awareness. AEIRC and PSPP. The session on traumatic stress was held on 12th April 2014 at Institute of Behavioural Sciences (IBS),

3RD MAY 2014: Advance Educational Institute and Research Centre (AEIRC) in collaboration with Centre for Global Studies and

Research (CGSR) held a seminar on "Child Marriages" The idea was to bring light upon the issue of early marriages and the

related consequences, be it social or health related. A brief introduction of the seminar was provided by Mr. Sarfraz Ahmed. The

speakers for the session were Mr. Muqtida Mansoor (CGSR), Dr. Riaz Shiek (CGSR) and Ms. Sadaf Ahmed (AEIRC). They discussed

the realities with data from our society on forced early marriages and issues that surround such cases, the outcomes and

related social disasters were also discussed at length. It was an informative and absorbing session, appreciated by one and all.

Dr. Muqtida Mansoor indicated that he would like to further work with AEIRC in order to highlight social problems of our society,

Seminar on CHILD MARRIAGES at AEIRC

10th April 2014: Advance Educational Insti-

tute and Research Centre placed a health

awareness stall at University of Karachi

on occassion of the Golden Jublee cele-

brations of department of Pharmacy (UoK).

It was an effort to spread health care

awareness to one and all. AEIRC played

its role in the awareness campaign by

providing free tests on the "Three Bees

of Health": Blood Pressure (BP), Body

Mass Index (BMI) and Basal Metabolic

Rate (BMR). The efforts of spreading

awareness were carried brilliantly by the

team AEIRC .The team was surrounded

with people throughout the day who

came in search of their status of well

being and team AEIRC served them all

with answers to all their keen questions.

A great number of people kept swarming

around team AEIRC all day and got their

BP, BMI and BMR measured and went

better aware of what sort of lifestyle would be healthy for them. Overall, it was a day full of hardwork for team AEIRC and the

entire team remained zealous to the cause of awareness with the best attitudes.

conducted to train the

methods. The session

was addressed by Mr.

Shamoon Noushad

who spoke on Back-

ground of clinical research, Ms. Sadaf Ahmed delivered her talk on Introduction to clinical research, pre clinical research and

Phases of clinical trials. Mr. Syed Zain Azher spoke about ICH- GCP guidelines and Saima Khan discussed Case Studies in this

regard. It was an effort recognized by the students and staff of BIPS alike and the Dean commended AEIRC on their hard work

and dedication.

tre (AEIRC) placed a health aware-

ness stall along with fun and games

for children at the Family health Day

and Fun mela at Dr. A.Q. Khan Centre

Institute of Behavioral Sciences (IBS) .

Team AEIRC joined IBS in their

Health day in order to embark the

necessity of good hhealth and to

spread awareness to the general

populace. The stall placed by AEIRC

contained BMI, BMR and BP evalua-

tion, free for all and the fun desk

placed for children included face

painting, balloon dedications and

games such as "finding the correct

key to the lock" and "locating the

sharpened pencil" . The games were

enjoyed by children and the Health

awareness mission of the team proved successful as people visited the stall, got their health check done and left satisfied with

answers towards a better and healthier life. Team leaders achieved their task with grace along with strong support from the team

ambassadors who put in their efforts to make the aim of the health and fun stall a success.

Seminar on Young Writing World in Collaboation with Youth

Affair Department Govt. of Sindh

20th May 2014: One day seminar on "Young Writing World" was organized by Advance Educational Institute and Research Centre

(AEIRC) with the support of Sports and youth affairs department, Government of Sindh at Regent Plaza, Karachi. It was an effort

to provide youth with a chance to explore their potential in terms of writing and to gain key knowledge about bringing their ideas

into well written formats and penning down their thoughts constructively and innovatively with authenticity. The speakers for the

session included Ms. Ufaq binte Jamal (UIT) who spoke on "Creative writing", she discussed the key points in this regard and

encouraged the participants to believe in their abilities and write. Mr. Muqtada Ali (CGSR) talked about Column Writing Urdu/

English, in his talk he emphasized the need to have grip on the language in order to write well. Mr. Naveed Noushad (Axact)

delivered his talk effectively on "Resume writing", speaking about effective resume he said that one should be concise and well

the reader. Mr. Mazhar Ahmed spoke about "Business writing" and clarified the dire need of writing efficiently as it is a

requirement in every field and a building brick in case of business. Ms. Sadaf Ahmed (AEIRC) spoke on "academic writing", she

spoke with her experience as a teacher and highlighted the need of well written drafts by students, since everything has to be

written down and presented well for fulfillment of academic requirement. Moreover, she spoke about writing as a way to step up

and explore because all research has to be written down and being efficient as a writer can prove helpful in that case. Mr.

Shamoon Noushad (AEIRC) delivered his talk on "Ethics in writing", he emphasized on the need to review our basics and learn

where we are going wrong. Speaking about ethics he discussed a few cases and experiences where plagiarized work was put

forward, he also highlighted that there is a need to understand the guidelines and norms before we step further in anything and

writing follows the same format, it has to be original in order to be unique.

Writing is a skill that needs grooming and practice!!!!

28th May 2014: Team Advance Educational Institute and Research Centre (AEIRC), held a session on "YOUTH BEHAVIORAL

DEVELOPMENT" at Usman Institute of Technology (UIT) with the kind support of Sports and Youth affairs department, Government

of Sindh .The aim of this session was to foster a sense of responsibilty and light the spark of better living in the young

generation of our society. The most

emphasized point was the stress

burden on youth and ways to

minimize it on order to train young

minds to tackle their problems and

be able to see tough situations as

potential teachers in order to

handle things better. The speakers

for this session included Mr.

Shamoon Noushad (AEIRC), Ms. Nida

Anwar (IBS), Ms Amna Aftab (IBS),

Mr Azher Naqvi (Geo Television), Mr

Naveed Noushad (AXACT), Ms. Sadaf

Ahmed (AEIRC) and Ms. Asma

Makhani (AKUH). They spoke on

Youth behavioral development by

various angles including the

stressors and burdens that youth

faces in our society, the challenges

relating to finding a job, performing

better in organizations/exams/

interviews. The reasons and

prevalance of depression on

adolescence was also discussed. The

need of having a positive approach,

an open mind and easy going

attitude was emphasized. Ms. Asma

Makhani's session was solely

dedicated to mind meditation and

relaxation in order to learn better

and have positivity as a take-home

message. It was an effort

appreciated by all the participants

and AEIRC hopes to carry the task

of motivating youth by holding more

such sessions in future. The efforts

of the organizing committee and

ambassadors were appreciated by

means of certificates and shields.

Dr. Zafar Iqbal (BIDE) also bestowed

the efforts. The Sadaf Stess Manual

has been launched and published on

the same date and was practiced at

Stress Evaluation booth. The manual

Seminar on PYSCHOSOCIAL STRESS

17th June 2014: The 4th session of the “seven strings of stress” was on PSYCHOSOCIAL STRESS, organized by Advance Educational

Institute and Research Centre (AEIRC) and Pakistan Society of Psychophysiology (PSPP) at Abdul Qadeer Khan Institute (Institute of

behavioral sciences). The agenda of the session was to cover the stressors that cause psychosocial stress, the impact that others can create

on a person. The speakers for the session were Mr. Shamoon Noushad (AEIRC, vice president PSPP) who discussed the relation of stress

with health, Ms. Sadaf Ahmed (AEIRC, President PSPP) who talked upon the role of brain in identifying and managing psychosocial stress,

Ms. Amna Karimi (IBS), Mr. Qaiser Abbas (IBS) and Ms. Hina Naz (IBS) who all talked on ways to manage the psychosocial aspects of

depression. Dr Salman Shahzad (ICP) talked about the aspects of psychosocial stress. Dr. Asma Makhani (AKUH) made the participants

indulge in an activity of meditation. The session was attended by students of various universities and professionals of health science field.

The chief guest for the session was Dr. Raza ur Rehman (DUHS) who congratulated and commended AEIRC on their efforts of conducting

One Day Workshop on YOUTH IN CONFLICT

19th June 2014: Sports & Youth Affairs DepartmentGovernment of Sindh in collaboration with Advance Educational Institute and

Research Centre (AEIRC) organized a workshop on "Youth in Conflict" in Karachi. The speakers for the session were Mr. Momin

Khan Momin (CGSR), Mr. Muqtida Mansoor (CGSR) and Ms. Sadaf Ahmed (AEIRC). The idea behind the workshop was to clarify

the affects of violence, to make youth abreast of their role in the society and to empower them with the knowledge to deal with

tough times, to encourage them to think positively and develop a patient attitude. The need of discussion was emphasized in

order to avoid conflict and hence keep the weeds of violence away from our society. It was also suggested by speakers and

participants alike that there should be more such workshops held in order to bring the social issues in light and to find possible

solutions together.

Efforts made in small scale with pure intentions always have great impact. Team AEIRC collaborated with Abuzafar Institute of

Medical Sciences at Kohi Goth Hospital, Karachi to train and teach Midwives and Nurses for Human Physiology and Research.

Pre-Conference Workshop:

24TH June: The conference started with a pre- conference workshop on 24th June at PMA house , Karachi. The workshop was

entitled “Self identity and positivity”, based on the thought to promote and boost self esteem and to develop a positive attitude.

The pre conference workshop was attended by students mainly from health science background, doctors and other professionals.

The speakers for the session were Shamoon Noushad (AEIRC) who discussed the outcomes of stress on women health,

highlighting various stressors, such as pregnancy induced physical stress, traumatic stress resulting from harassment, mental

stress induced due to societal pressures, the psychosocial stress issues that burden the health in general and effect the self

esteem negatively, he discussed the stressors and their outcomes at length, emphasizing the need to further indulge and

investigate ways for women to positively deal with it. Sadaf Ahmed (AEIRC) highlighted the role of positivity which is the key to

live a better life, to have a sound mind is necessary to be healthy and to live a life of your choice, to make the participants feel

the positivity, she called upon few of her students who shared the problems faced by them being girls and how their positive

attitudes have changed their journey towards a better living. She jotted down some key points in developing self identity via a

positive attitude. Asma Makhani (AKUH) along with Ali Suleman (AFRICA) made the participants work upon techniques to release

stress and feel positive. They made the participants abreast of Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) which is a combination of

meditation techniques to make one feel positive and relieved.

23rd June: The press conference was held at Karachi

Press Club to mark a three-day international women

conference – jointly organized by the PMA, Tehrik-e-

Niswan, All Pakistan Women’s Association and the

AEIRC – which will begin from June 24 at PMA,

PNFWH president Dr Shershah Syed, Pakistan Medi-

cal Association (PMA) Karachi general-secretary Dr

Qazi Wasiq and AEIRC CEO Sadaf Ahmed were

among those who spoke about women’s health relat-

ed issues, rights and status and measures taken for

them across the country during a conference organ-

ised to empower women.

Inaugural Session of Ist International Conference on Women Empowerment

25th June: The inaugural session was

held on 25th June 2014 at APWA

auditorium, Karachi. The participants

in this session included students,

parents, working professionals, people

from different NGOs mid-wives and

nurses. It was a session for the

general public , covering discussions

on the basic problems and

highlighting the core issues of

women. Sadaf Ahmed(AEIRC)

welcomed the participants and

guests and introduced the theme

and idea of the conference “Create,

Nurture and Transform; The

International Conference on Women

Empowerment” . Hamid Manzoor

(PMA) discussed about hepatitis in

pregnancy, he talked about the threat that it poses to the health of young women. Naheed Sultan (DUHS) talked about the issues

associated with Breast Cancer and how it effects the empowerment of women. Erum Kazim (Civil Hospital) highlighted the need to

identify and follow the ways leading to prevent Breast Cancer. Qaiser Sajjad (PMA) talked about Mouth Cancer in women. Sonia

Naqvi (Sir Syed Medical College) discussed about Cervical Cancer and ways to prevent it, highlighting the need of awareness

among the general population. Sadiqa Salahuddin (Indus Resource Centre) highlighted the position and state of education of

young girls in rural areas. Habiba Hassan (AURA) talked about empowerment in general and highlighted the poor state of women

in our society. Beverly Hill (USA) talked on “Infanticide in Asian Women” . Nighat Shah (AKUH) discussed the need of Family

planning as it is a dire need of our society. Shershah Syed (kohi Goth Women hospital) discussed violence against women in

Pakistan, talking about the social burdens on women of our society. Wasif (PMA) delivered his talk on “Women with escort soul”.

Sheema Kirmani (Tehrik –e-Niswan) gave a brief account of the role played by Tehrik-e-Niswan in highlighting the rights of women .

Each and every talk was followed by question and answers session, with a healthy discussion on every aspect of the discussed

topic at length, covering the issues, symptoms and consequences and ways of prevention of the disease, also highlighting the

cures for each discussed health issue.

The discussions were followed by a

stage play “RaqsKaro- Story of women

through the ages” prepared and

performed by SheemaKirmani and her

group (Tehrik-e-Niswan). This stage play

portrayed the status of women in our

society and how they are kept

oppressed and backward. It was carried

out in such a way that made the whole

picture clear in the minds of the

people, lightening up the minds and

hearts and compelling people to ponder

upon the state of living in our women.

The Scientific session of the conference was held on 26th June 2014 at PMA house, Karachi. Since it was purely a research study based talk, the audience included stu-dents, doctors, professionals from other medicine related fields, people working with various NGOs, universities, organizations etc. The session contained key note lectures, oral and poster presentations all revolving around studies conducted on the health

issues and certain social aspects. The first talk was on “Genetics of Breast Can-cer” by Syed A. Aziz (University of Ottawa, Cana-da), who discussed at length the genetic aspect of Breast Cancer and the increasing prevalence of this particular disease . Shershah Syed (PMA) presented his talk on “Lesson Learn Safe Motherhood”. Kausar S Khan (AKUH) held a panel discussion on “Where is power in women’s empower-ment?”, she highlighted the need to define what we mean by empowerment of women and to build a structure upon which to work in this regard. Nelofer Sultana (SMBBMC) talked on “Alzheimer in women”, highlighting the need of education for women, to keep the brain working in a healthy manner. Sajjad Ahmed Siddiqui (NFUHS) talked on “The unfair burden of fertility regulation; a

Rozina Karmaliani (AKUH) held a panel discussion on “Violence against women in Pakistan”, emphasizing upon the need to identify the key components in fighting the violence against women. Simi Kamal (Aurat Foundation) held a panel discussion on “Controlling our lives; Women’s empowerment in Pakistan”. Azmat Jehan Khan (AKUH) talked on the prevalence of emotional and psychosocial abuse among the female healthcare providers. Nausheen Salim (AKUH) discussed about Vaginal discharge and the need of understanding when to consult a doctor. Rozina Somani (AKUH) talked on sexual harassment towards nurses in Pakistan. Shireen Shehzad (AKUH) discussed her study on Resilience and the validation of the Urdu version of resilience scale to measure the state of resilience among the married women living in urban settings of Karachi, Pakistan. Saima Khan (AEIRC) talked about the Correlation of Breast self examination among females having positive family history. Sohail Amir Ali Bawani (AKUH) talked about the need to develop a basic framework in order to work upon the violence against women. Rafique Wassan (AMRDO) talked on empowerment through female entrepreneurship in rural Sindh. Komal Daredia (Marie Stopes Society) talked on the need of education towards family planning in the rural areas of Pakistan. Unzela Ayub (AEIRC) talked about the trends and barriers towards physical health among the married and unmarried females . Salima Akbar (AKUH) talked about Fistula , its psychosocial impacts and ways of coping with it. Poster presentations on topics related to women health were also presented, evaluation was done by the panelists: Zafar Iqbal Abbasi (BIDE), Hamid Manzoor (PMA) and QaziWasiq (PMA).

As an outcome of two significant projects of Psychophysiology Research Division & Breast cancer Research

Division, AEIRC has launched two annual publications INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL ON WOMEN EMPOWERMENT &

ANNALS OF PSYCHOPHYSIOLOGY. Moreover Vol. 2, Issue 1. of International Journal on Endorsing Health Science

Research has been successfully published both in online and print versions. The original articles, case studies,

reviews and case series are invited for publication in all journals.
