    Introduction Thiscurriculumguideisintendedforfacultymembersinhealthprofessionseducationprogramsseekingtodesignandimplementinterprofessionallearningactivitiesintheareaofclinicalpreventionandpopulationhealth.ThecurrentnationalfocusoninterprofessionaleducationandcollaborativepracticeisconducivetotheeducationoffuturehealthprofessionalsindiseasepreventionandpopulationhealthandcanfacilitatetheachievementofthenationshealthgoalsoutlinedinHealthyPeople2020.HealthyPeople2020objectivesincludedintheEducationalandCommunityBasedPrograms(ECBP)TopicAreawilladvanceinterprofessionalclinicalpreventionandpopulationhealtheducation.

    APTR Healthy People Curriculum Task Force In2002,TheAssociationforPreventionTeachingandResearchconvenedhealthprofessionseducationassociationsrepresentingnursing,medicine,pharmacy,dentistry,physicianassistantsandalliedhealthtoformtheHealthyPeopleCurriculumTaskForcetoaddressHealthyPeople2010Objective1.7:Toincreasetheproportionofschoolsofmedicine,schoolsofnursingandhealthprofessionaltrainingschoolswhosebasiccurriculumforhealthcareprovidersincludesthecorecompetenciesinhealthpromotionanddiseaseprevention.In2004,theTaskForcepublishedtheClinicalPreventionandPopulationHealthCurriculumFramework(CurriculumFramework)toprovideacommonstructureandlanguagearoundclinicalpreventionandpopulationhealthacrossthehealthprofessionseducationprograms.Revisedin2009,theCurriculumFrameworkoutlines19domainswithinfourcontentareas:evidencebasedpractice;clinicalpreventiveservicesandhealthpromotion;healthsystemsandhealthpolicy;andpopulationhealthandcommunityaspectsofpractice.

    Competencies and Standards for Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice Inearly2010,healthprofessionseducationassociationsrepresentingnursing,medicine,pharmacy,dentistry,andpublichealthjoinedtogethertoformtheInterprofessionalEducationCollaborative(IPEC)andconvenedanexpertpaneltoproduceareporttodefineacommonlanguageforinterprofessionaleducationandcollaborativepractice.CoreCompetenciesforInterprofessionalCollaborativePractice(CoreCompetencies)wasreleasedinMay2011.TheCoreCompetenciesareintendedtoguidepreparationofhealthprofessionsstudentsforintegrated,highqualitycarewithinthenationsevolvinghealthcaresystem.Theexpertpanelidentified38behavioralexpectationsacrossfourcompetencydomains:ValuesandEthicsforInterprofessionalPractice,RolesandResponsibilities,InterprofessionalCommunication,andTeamsandTeamwork.

    Rationale ThelandscapeofhealthcareintheUnitedStatesischanging.Increasingly,thereimbursementsystemandthefocusofcarearemovingfromprovidingcaretopeopleoneatatime,toaddressingthehealthofpopulations.Suchatransformationwillrequiresignificantchangesintheeducationalsystemforhealthcareprofessionals.Theinterprofessionalteamwillplayanimportantroleinexpandingthefocusfromtreatmenttodiseasepreventionandhealthpromotion.Curricularguidancedocumentsandaccreditationstandardsinthehealthprofessionsincreasinglyincludeexpectationsforinterprofessionalteambasedcompetence.SelectedstatementsfromspecificprofessionsareprovidedasexamplesinAppendixA.AnumberoftheCoreCompetenciesadvancedbyIPECcanbeacquiredifhealthprofessionsstudentsworktogethertoaddresspriorityareasidentifiedinHealthyPeople2020andintheCurriculumFramework.Offeringstudentstheopportunitytoaddresspopulationhealthissuesasmembersofteamswillequipthemwithanunderstandingofwhateachhealthprofessionalbringstothecareofpatientsandhealthofcommunities.ConnectingtheCoreCompetencieswiththeCurriculumFrameworkcanguideeducationalprogramsastheybuildarobustcurriculumthatwillpreparestudentsforfutureservicetopopulations.WhenreviewingtheCoreCompetencies,itisevidentthatmuchofthe2009CurriculumFrameworkcouldbetaughtinterprofessionally.TheCurriculumResourceGuidethatfollowsprovidesexamplesofhowCurriculumFrameworkcontentelementscouldbelinkedtospecificstatementswithintheCore

    Competencies.UsersofthisGuideareencouragedtoexploreadditionalcombinationsofcurriculumcontentelementsandinterprofessionalcompetenciesthatoptimizetheuseandfurtherdevelopmentoflocalexpertiseandresources.

    Curriculum Development Guide TheHealthyPeopleCurriculumTaskForcehaspreparedaguidetoinformcurriculumdevelopmentfocusedonstudentsabilitiestoparticipateeffectivelyasmembersofinterprofessionalhealthcareteamsdeliveringclinicalpreventionandpopulationhealthservices.Usersareencouragedtoadaptthisguideandcustomizeactivitiestoaninstitutionsspecificlearningenvironmentsandhealthprofessionseducationprograms.
