THE “DARK DAYS” OF INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHTING.Early on in their respective histories, manufactures of ruggedized Human-Machine Interface (HMI) equipment used small incandescent bulbs housed in metal “posts” to provide lighting to instrument controls and switch panels.

Known as “post lights,” these small lights were an advancement over lanterns and flashlights, but they were extremely problematic. Their small bright lights put glare on the surfaces they were supposed to illuminate.

The metal posts were hot and they would routinely break off. Overall, these were units with low reliability and high maintenance requirements.

BACKLIT PANELS. BETTER BUT NOT GREAT.

A few decades ago designers began to transition from post lights to backlit instruments and panels.

These early attempts were often just a piece of heavy transparent acrylic with the appropriate switch nomenclature painted on the surfaces. Back-lighting would then shine through the material and paint, illuminating the information.

While these solutions eliminated the issues with post lights, over time pilots and operators found that during routine daily operations the top “painted” surface of the panel would wear away from the base. The worn surface would not only become unreadable, it exposed more of the transparent base layer and created large areas where raw light could distract the pilot or operator, causing a safety issue.

These work areas were not only illegible and annoying, they meant that the panels had to be completely refurbished or replaced in as few as every five years. From a maintenance and operational cost standpoint, many operators were finding that the “new” backlit panels provided few benefits over their post light predecessors.

STACO SYSTEMS ADVANCED OPTICAL TECHNOLOGY SOLUTIONS.PROBLEM SOLVED.

As a global leader in the design, development and production of state-of-the-art lighting systems for HMI, Staco Systems has developed a revolutionary solution to this historic multi-industry-wide problem.

Through the use of our patented polymer materials combined with our proprietary optical characteristics and unique, two-piece construction, our new advanced optical technology panels eliminate the problem of worn panel faces, illegible nomenclature and ongoing costly maintenance and equipment down time.

By engraving the legends on the back of the panel face, we have el iminated any chance for the operator to touch the sur face and damage the legend.

This not only ensures that the panels are easy to read in all lighting conditions, it also means that repetitive repairs and ongoing maintenance requirements are things of the past. Just like painted panels.

STACO ADVANCED OPTICS. CLEARLY BETTER.

Staco System’s advanced optical technology units are the only wear-resistant, illuminated panels that will meet the current and future needs in any aircraft, ship or surface vehicle operating in any environment.

From color sunlight readable illuminated text to NVIS-compliance, our proprietary advanced optical technology ensures that Staco Systems’ panels deliver the same high brightness and ease of readability found in our industry leading lighted switches.

Another advantage to our advanced optical technology is when used in extremely harsh environments like those found on ships and military vehicles, our proprietary chassis plates will prevent light leakage should the face become damaged. This is a key differentiator in situations where NVIS may be in use.
