We are witnessing how:

- the initial understanding of the freight

logistics as a process of delivering cargo

from the sender to the receiver

orients itself to

the direction of

- product logistics as a process of delivering the cargo from the first supplier to the ultimate consumer.

Page 4: Advanced intermodal freight logistics centers

Day before yesterday = uni/inter-modal logistics - no handling freight when changing modes.

Yesterday = multimodal logistics - different modes but one operator.

Today = co-modal combination of logistics within the supply chain.

Tomorrow = combination of logistics within the integrated supply/final production chain.

Day after tomorrow = logistics as interaction tool within the integrated production/supply chain.

Logistics of the Future

The scale of the industry

In 2010, in Poland transport and warehousing sectors generated 7.4% of GDP

and employed 476 thousand workersSource: Ministerstwo Gospodarki, "Polska 2011 - Raport o Stanie Gospodarki", Warszawa 2011.

In 2009, the logistics sector in the EU:reached a market share of 880 billion Euros representing to 14% of the EU's GDP,

employing 11,9 million people in 1.2 million companies, which accounts for 9.2% of the entire EU employment

rate.Source: Prof. Hans-Christian Pfohl; Konference of the European Logistics Association - 16 February 2012.

In Australia the Transport and Logistics industry: employs more than half a million workers, over 165,000 businesses make up the industry, which in 2010-11 was worth more than A$100 billion.

Within the European Core Region, in the close neighbourhood of the Primary Clusters and Logistics Centres of Antwerp, Rotterdam and Amsterdam are located the logistics centres of Luxembourg, Limburg and Liege.

For comparison purposes the evaluation of the logistics centres is based on the EU's Larger Urban Zone (LUZ) concept.

Limburg is connected to the European high-speed rail networks of ICE, TGV, Eurostar and Thalys.

The Maastricht-Brussels Express brings traveling time from Maastricht to Brussels down to one hour and 20 minutes.

Daily cargo rail shuttles run between Rotterdam and Antwerp and hinterland terminals in Venlo, Born and Maastricht.

From here there are rail services to Germany (Duisburg), Italy (Milan) and Eastern-Europe. New rail terminals are to be developed in Venlo and at the Chemelot industrial park in Geleen.

Page 17: Advanced intermodal freight logistics centers

Limburg offers extensive inland shipping facilities that improve the hinterland connections of the main European seaports of Rotterdam and Antwerp. The inland terminals in Venlo and Born are positioned as the extended gateway of the deep-sea terminals. Inland barges and rail shuttles with daily connections to Rotterdam, Antwerp and Amsterdam provide a guaranteed and cost effective transport to and from the hinterland. Tri-modal container terminals are located along the river Meuse in Venray, Venlo and Born. Maastricht has the largest European inland port for the transshipment of steel.

The Logistics Regional Centre of Limburg (NI)

Due to Limburg’s strong internationally oriented business community, many major companies have already chosen to set up strategic logistics operations in the region. Limburg has a long history as a transportation centre. The region provides significant business advantages in the form of lower taxes and efficient customs clearing processes.

Limburg is a good example that illustrates how the logistics industry can adapt to changing world trade patterns. With its advanced logistics services, one of those Value Added Logistics, Limburg tries to get a more advantageous position opposed to other European regions.

Province Liege within Wallonia

- Liege as a Province in Wallonia Belgium; area 3,844 sq.km, population 1,077,000

-Liege as a District within the province; area 770 sq.km, population 609,400

-Liege as the core city of a larger urban area 69,4 sq.km, population 194,700, and

-Liege as a "Larger Urban Zone" (LUZ) classified by EU methods and standards.

District Liege and Core City

Core City

Liege is an example how a struggling city uses its resources and utilise its strategic location to become a major freight logistics centre in this

part of Europe. Co-ordinated and well planned, long reaching and consequent activities determinate this achievement.

Page 21: Advanced intermodal freight logistics centers

Transport and logistics became the major economic development engines of Wallonia with Liege being the most important centre for those activities.

Strategic location of Liege

Page 22: Advanced intermodal freight logistics centers

  Rail

Using Wallonia's extensive rail network, freight to and from Liege can easily reach every major production and consumer centre in Europe and getaway ports of Antwerp, Rotterdam, Zeebrugge and Amsterdam.

Page 23: Advanced intermodal freight logistics centers

Fast train connections with Brussels, Antwerp, Namur Charleroi, Luxembourg, Maastricht, London, Paris, Lyon, Aachen, Cologne and Frankfurt.High speed rail is used by Carex Liege for transporting express cargo.

Rail

Page 24: Advanced intermodal freight logistics centers

Liege is situated on a junction of 6 major roads of national and international importance.

Roads

Liège's crossroads "ring" has 6 branches in clockwise order: the E25 to the south, towards Luxembourg and into France via Metz, Nancy, Lyon the E42 to the west, to Wallonia via Mons/Bergen before entering France via Valenciennes, Paris the E40 to the west, to the Belgian coast via Brussels the E313 to Antwerp and to the coastal cities of the Netherlands the E25 to the north, to Maastricht and the rest of the Netherlands beyond the E40 to the east, entering Germany via Aachen, with a splits heading to Trier.

Page 25: Advanced intermodal freight logistics centers

Connection with European waterways through river Meuse and Albert Canal. Liege's Trilogiport Container Terminal is a back - up facility for Antwerp, Rotterdam and Zeebrugge.

Water The port of Liège encompasses 31 port areas on the Meuse and the Albert Canal with a surface area of 370 hectares, of which 269 are in use. For container handling the most important is the Liège Trilogiport on the Albert Canal at Hermalle-sous-Argenteau, the only trimodal terminal in Wallonia, between the deep sea ports of Antwerp, Rotterdam and Zeebrugge and the hinterland of Belgium, Northern France and Germany.

Liege-Bierset

Airport sixth largest

cargo airport in

Europe works

"round the clock". It

is the base-port for

TNT Express Center

serving 75

destinations.

Liege Bierset Airport is mainly cargo orientated. It is centrally located in the heart of the golden triangle between Amsterdam, Paris and Frankfurt. The cargo flight to and from Liege are able to reach a potential market of nearly 400 mil. consumers. It is open 7 days a week, round the clock. It's TNT's European Express Center. TNT serves from here 63 European and 12 intercontinental destinations.

ResumeFor the provided examples the common links are:- the collapse of the traditional industries with

its overall negative impact, and - in their place the creation of modern regional

freight logistics centres

Those centers are the result of cooperative efforts of the authorities, business, science and society in utilising and modernising an efficient

transport network on a multi and co-modal platform. The integrated part of the success stories are the special local

enterprises created with the aim to organise, promote and further develop those centers.

It would be our great satisfaction if the authorities of the City and the Province of Lodz will have the determination to follow the examples of Luxembourg, the Province of Limburg and the

LUZ of Liege, thus the LUZ of Lodz is comparable to them in location, area and population.
