Shifting knowledge to insight
Earned Value Management (EVM) is a value-for-money approach for measuring project performance. It compares the value delivered to the planned and actual project performance, and provides management with performance indicators to forecast the expected project completion date and cost.
This course covers most of the material in the Association for the Advancement of Cost Engineering’s (AACE) Skills and Knowledge of Cost Engineering, as well as all the topics in the Project Management Institute’s (PMI) Practice Standard for Earned Value Management.
Course content
Day 1• A brief history of the origins of Earned Value (EV) and EVM• The development of the Work Breakdown Structure and its use
in the EVM process• Structuring the project for EVM use and creating an integrated
time and cost view of the project• The Project Performance Measurement Baseline and S-curve• 6 methods of project progress measurement• Descriptive EV methods
Day 2• EV forecasting• 5 methods of Estimate at Completion calculations• Variance at Completion• To Complete Performance Index (TCPI)• Productivity measures• Work contours and their effect on EVM• Contracting and EVM• The effect of contingency and other reserves on the EVM• Critical Path Analysis in EVM• Earned Schedule• EV reporting and dashboards• EV case study
Learning outcomes
After successful completion of this course delegates will be able to• plan projects to support EVM during execution• apply descriptive EVM techniques to report on project
progress. Apply predictive EVM techniques to forecast project performance. Apply Earned Schedule techniques to forecast project completion dates
• select the most appropriate EV methods for particular work methods and contract types
• measure the productivity of project work teams, and• identify and implement actions to correct deviations from the
project’s performance measurement baseline.
