In a blended family, one or both spouses bring chil-dren with them from a previous marriage or rela-tionship. Half of all families are blended families,

and these relationships feature special dynamics thatare present from the beginning.

It's vital to understand these issues. One of the mostsignificant ones is that people tend to enter a remar-riage or blended family with lower trust and higherexpectations. This is a difficult combination.Lower trust means having less good will toward aspouse, and more suspicion of motives and actions. This happens when a person enters a new relationshipafter having had their heart broken.

In their first relationship, the other person was inno-cent until proven guilty. But in the new marriage, low-ered trust means assuming guilt until proveninnocent. Why? Because no one wants to get theirheart broken again.

Higher expectations result when the failures of some-one's past leave them in a place where they refuse toput up with failure from a new spouse. They enter amarriage less forgiving, less gracious, and less wel-coming.

Divorce rates are higher in blended families becauseboth spouses may be entering the marriage with lowtrust and high expectations.Marriage is trust. You can't marry and mistrust. In mar-riage, you are entrusting your life, your future, and

even your children to another person. After establishing trust, a couple must disassociatefrom the past. They need to forgive the wounds andfailures of their past relationships and move on to thepresent. Past difficult experiences often lead to aninner vow.

Inner vows are a type of long-term sin. When we gothrough pain, often we make ourselves promises tocomfort ourselves. We say, "No man will ever treat melike that again" or "No woman will ever do that to me."Then we go through the rest of our lives protectingourselves with that vow.

These vows make us unteachable. Inner vows preventJesus from being Lord over that area in our lives. Everyperson makes inner vows when we face emotionalpain—but we have to break those vows.Rather than keep control of that part of our lives forourselves, we have to give that area to Jesus. In the process of getting free from the past, a couplealso needs to focus on the future by dreaming newdreams together. That's why Karen and I always sug-gest that couples have a vision retreat.

A husband and wife need to get away and talk abouttheir plans for the future. They need to discuss theirdesires, their values, even their plans for children.During this retreat, both of you work through the is-sues in your past. Talk about them. Pray togetherabout them. Ask God to help you forgive them. Then, determine that you will treat each other as innocentuntil proven guilty. You can't let the scars of your pastbecome a harsh taskmaster in your marriage.Submit your marriage and blended family to God.Rather than letting your scarred emotions be the lordof your marriage, make Jesus Christ the Lord of yourmarriage. He has promised to heal your hearts—andHe will.

Divorce rates are higher inblended families becauseboth spouses may be enteringthe marriage with low trustand high expectations.

Therefore, dear friends, since you already knowthis, be on your guard so that you may not becarried away by the error of lawless men and fall

from your secure position. 2 Peter 3:17, NIV

The current belief battles going on within evangel-ical Christianity; make this admonishing by theApostle Peter more relevant to the purity and healthof our faith-walk.

It suggests that if [Peter’s] readers were not careful, they could be carried away by the error of lawlessmen … The verb “carried away” emphasizes agroup or corporate movement. False teachers arenot satisfied with ambushing one or two, now andthen, here and there; they want to sweep largegroups of people away from the correct doctrine ofChrist. Those who keep company with such peopleare in danger of being led astray.

I don’t need or want to name prominent names orcite recent book titles or the like within the Chris-tian bubble, as I’m sure that one or many have al-ready come to your mind by this point in thiseditorial. Sadly, false teaching is everywhere thesedays and only seems to be gaining momentum aswe head further into the twenty-first century.

It’s alarming, for sure, to hear those who are in pas-toral, shepherding or leadership positions mis-handle God’s Word or imply that there is suddenlya new “change” in the meaning of scriptural doc-trines that trained theologians and Bible scholarshave agreed upon for centuries prior. But Truth issupposedly relative in the world where we now live. What’s true for you may not be true for me. So howdo we arm ourselves and follow Peter’s instruction

to “be on your guard” as

believers?

But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lordand Savior Jesus Christ (2 Peter 3:18).First, there’s grace; unmerited favor from God. Howdo we grow in that? By reminding ourselves con-tinually of what God did for each and every one ofus. If we don’t understand grace, then we will neverknow who God is, what he stands for and what aright relationship with him looks like. “While wewere still sinners, Christ died for us” (Rom. 5:8).When we get that, in turn, our lives will be livedfrom a place of humility and in testimony of whatGod has done through us.

And then there’s knowledge. We will only grow spir-itually and know God as much as we can in this lifeif we know the Word. And that doesn’t begin andend only with what someone says the Bible says(which isn’t bad in and of itself). But it means read-ing the Bible for yourself on a continuing basis, sothat it will take root in your heart and inform yourthinking and your actions. There is no better way tomature in the Lord and know Truth (and be cor-rected in your thinking, if it’s “stinking”) than tospend time getting to know God through the Word.

No one else can have your spiritual relationship foryou. And anyone who leads you away from Truth isleading you away from a secure position. So be onyour guard. And get in there, dig deep and knowHis unchanging truth (John 5:39).

Are you ready to confront false teaching and seethrough the devil’s schemes to trick and deceive—even in Christian circles? Always consider thesource and always measure what you hear or readagainst God’s Word (Acts 17:11).

At the end of 2004, during one of our serv-ices, the Lord told our church this: “I yourGod have gone ahead of you and I have

already been to your future. I have seen it. AndI declare that it is good.”

Although this word was given through me toour church, I believe that it is not only for ourchurch, but also for every member of the bodyof Christ.

I tell you, when God declares your future good,it will be good! It will be filled with many won-derfully good days!

So what do you do when the Lord tells you thatyou are going to have a good future loadedwith His blessings? You prepare for it! In otherwords, before the blessings come, before theincrease comes, He wants you to enlarge the

place of your tent and stretch forth the curtainsof your dwellings.

For example, if you are believing God for achild, start reading books on babies andpreparing the baby’s room. In fact, prepare tohave more than one child. Start looking for abigger place for your family for God says, “En-large the place of your tent, and let themstretch out the curtains of your dwellings; donot spare; lengthen your cords, andstrengthen your stakes.” Get ready for expan-sion!

My friend, God wants you to get ready, and ex-pect such favor and increase in the days aheadthat “you shall expand to the right and to theleft, and your descendants will inherit the na-tions, and make the desolate cities inhabited”.(Isaiah 54:3)

Because God has declared your future good, know that you stand on favor ground today. Ex-pect good things to happen to you. Expect tosee the favor of God on you and your family.Expect the blessings and increase of the Lord.Expect many good days to show up in your life!

Isaiah 54:2 “Enlarge theplace of your tent, and letthem stretch out the curtainsof your dwellings; do notspare; lengthen your cords, and strengthen your stakes.

God Has Seen Your Future And It Is Good!

Taking Back What Belongs to You

Joyce MeyerFor more on this topic, order Joyce’s four-CD series Amazing Grace. You can also contact usto receive our free magazine, Enjoying Everyday Life, by calling (800) 727-9673 or visitingwww.joycemeyer.org.

I’ve been robbed! That is one of the first revelationsI had after I started diligently studying the Wordand realized I wasn’t living the life Jesus died to

give me. At first it made me mad, but it was the truthI needed to hear to help me begin an amazing trans-formation to a life I can honestly say I now enjoy.

For many years before this, I was a Christian but I was-n’t serious about my walk with God. As a result, I wasmiserable. I didn’t have any real peace or joy, and Ifelt guilty most of the time. In fact, if I didn’t feel

“wrong,” it didn’t seem right.

Thankfully, God showed me through John 10:10 thatI didn’t have to be miserable and I could have abun-dant life in Christ. But I needed to change! I remem-ber asking God to show me what I needed to do tobecome the person 2 Corinthians 5:17 (AMP) said Ishould be: “…A new creature [reborn and renewedby the Holy Spirit]; the old things [the previous moraland spiritual condition] have passed away. Behold, new things have come [because spiritual awakeningbrings a new life].”

Have you ever thought, “If I’m so new, why do I actlike the ‘old man’?” Well, becoming a “new creature”from the inside out is a process that takes time. When

we accept Christ as our Savior and we’re born

again, we receive the nature of everything God is inseed form. 1 John 3:9 (AMP) says, “God’s seed [Hisprinciple of life, the essence of His righteous charac-ter] remains [permanently] in him [who is bornagain—who is reborn from above—spiritually trans-formed, renewed, and set apart for His purpose]….”

Seeds have to be watered and take root before theycan produce fruit. And the fruit of having life in Christis love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians5:22-23 NLT). It’s freedom to deal with challengesand overcome them by God’s grace so others will seeChrist in you and want what you have.

The key to experiencing this life is identifying thethief, who has come “to steal and kill and destroy”you (John 10:10 NLT).

One of the Biggest Thieves in My LifeIn John 10:10, Jesus tells us we have an enemy—thedevil—who wants to keep us from God. But when youread the whole chapter, you see that Jesus is talkingabout the system of religion, which is perpetrated bythe devil. Because the last thing the devil wants youto know is how much God loves you and how you canaccess everything you need to take back what he’sstolen from you through your relationship withChrist.

When I realized that God loves me unconditionallyand that He has a plan for my life, it helped me un-derstand that He wanted a close, intimate, personalrelationship with me. I discovered that the Christianlife is not about religion but relationship. Because re-ligion is a thief that keeps us from becoming trans-formed into the image of Christ.

Therefore, if anyone is inChrist, he is a new creation;old things have passedaway; behold, all thingshave become new.

Ibegin by saying God is who you say He is to you andresponds the way you trust Him to; so it is as yousay it is.

Jeremiah knew that nothing is too hard for God tohandle: he verbalizes it in Jer 32:17, “Ah, Lord God!Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth byYour great power and outstretched arm. There is noth-ing too hard for You”, and God honors his statement. Now when he lodges his complaint to God in 32:24he states, “Look, the siege mounds! They have come to

the city to takeit; and the cityhas beengiven into thehand of theC h a l d e a n swho fight

against it, because of the sword and famine and pesti-lence. What You have spoken has happened; thereYou see it!” God responds to him according to the faithexpressed in 32:27. God tells him, “Behold, I am theLord, the God of all flesh. Is there anything too hardfor Me?”

Further, God says in 32:37, “Behold, I will gather themout of all countries where I have driven them in Myanger, in My fury, and in great wrath; I will bring themback to this place, and I will cause them to dwellsafely.”Therefore, if you believe that God can gatherback unto you all that you have lost, He will, becauseGod does not lie (Num. 23:19).If you believe that He will rejoice over you todo you good (32:41), yes He will, because God’swords do not return to Him empty (Isa. 55:11).

If you believe that He will answer you whenyou call, He will (33:3). Don’t give up, keep prayingand God will do the impossible. Elijah prayed and theimpossible was done (James 5:16-18).If you believe He will bring you health, yes He will(33:6)If you trust God will restore to you the yearsyou have lost, then He will (33:7). It does not mat-ter under what circumstance the loss came or howlong ago it happened, Jesus can bring everythingback to you (Joel 2:25).

Do you believe your terrible sins can be for-given; sure, God is willing (33:8). I do not know whatsin the paralytic committed, but Jesus forgave him(Mat. 9:1-6). This is to say that Jesus is able and will-ing to forgive your sins now if you believe it.

Do you believe that a place that has beencalled desolate can be inhabited again and fullof joy? Yes it is going to happen to you (33:10-11)In Gen 18:1-14, God states that nothing is too hardfor Him. He gives a child to a woman who is alreadyninety years old (Sarah). I know of a woman who gavebirth after age 50 and I thought it was the biggest sur-prise yet, only to hear now that God has given anotherwoman of age 64 the ability to conceive. What can ourGod not do? Nothing.

Believe that God will bring His promises to pass, be-cause God is not a man that He should lie; continue inyour prayers, because your prayers will avail for youdivine blessings; continue in praise to His holy name, because He never fails; you will see God doing the im-possible for you. When His glory is revealed in yourlife, it will be as if you are dreaming.

Believe that God willbring His promises topass, because God isnot a man that Heshould lie;

Nothing is too hard for God

The Reason For Thanksgiving

ADONAI KIDS

What does Thanksgiving mean to you? Iguess you saying, "It means a big din-ner." I think I agree with you. Who

does not welcome and enjoy a good dinner? Ihear Michael, Adepa, Samuel, Aaron andAngel, also say, "Thanksgiving means a day offfrom school." I guess you are right too. Schoolis not such a charming place that girls andboys are willing to have an occasional holiday.

I asked some of the older people what the daymeans to them. There is a young woman. Sheis a Secretary. She says, "Thanksgiving meansa day away from the office. I am at the officeevery day except Sunday, and I do appreciate, now and then, a day that is really my own." Jayden is a traveling salesman. What doesThanksgiving mean to you? He says, "It meansa day at home. Last year I spent one hundredand sixty-nine nights away from home. I havethree children. I should like to see them everyday. There are times when many days pass andI do not see them. Thanksgiving is a time week

I plan to be at home."

There are others I could ask. Each has his or herown answer. But Thanksgiving has a specialmeaning for us. It is the Harvest time. Imaginean apple in your hand. Isn't it a beautifulapple? The color! Who mixed the paints, whohandled the brush to give such color to thisapple? God! He, in His infinite love and wis-dom, has provided, through the unfailing lawsof nature, for the growth, sweetness, coloringand beautifying of all the products of thefields. This apple is but one of many kinds offruits.

Praise, then, is the great meaning of Thanks-giving. God, our heavenly Father, sends usevery good gift. From His bountiful hand comeour daily and gracious mercies. We shouldpraise him every day for all the good things Heis doing in our lives.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING
