Requirements A headset microphone A webcam (if using video) A stable, high-speed internet connection A quiet environment in which to participate Up-to-date technical requirements can be found here:

Joining the Session If Adobe Connect is being used for office hours, find and click the “Office Hours” link in the left-hand
navigation menu of your Canvas course. On the Office Hours page, you will see instructions for
joining the session and troubleshooting, information
about when Office Hours sessions occur, an archive of
past Office Hour sessions, and a link to join Office Hours.
On the Office Hours page, click the link to join Office
Hours; you will be taken to the Adobe Connect login
page.
If not using Adobe Connect for office hours, simply
navigate to the Adobe Connect login page using the
Adobe Connect meeting room link that has been shared with you.
Log in as a guest and enter your first and last name so that your instructor/Host can identify you.
Blocked Sessions If you attempt to access a meeting room outside of designated meeting times (such as outside of
office hours), you may find that access is blocked. In some cases, a message will display, but if the
Host has not customized that message, it may feature incorrect and out-of-date schedule
information like you see below. Don’t be confused; rely on your course’s stated meeting times.
The Adobe Connect Display What you see in the Adobe Connect display depends on what the Hosts and Presenters have
prepared and are showing. That means you may not see all the pods (Adobe Connect term for
windows/panels) and options mentioned in this guide at any given time.

Communicating
Chat (Everyone) Pod
The Chat (Everyone) pod is for communicating via text with the entire
classroom. Everyone can see these messages and contribute to the
conversation.
Private Chats
You can also initiate private, one-on-one text chats with other attendees.
To do so, find the desired attendee in the Attendees pod, click on
her/him and select “Start Private Chat.”
You will see a new tab appear within the Chat pod named
according to whom you are privately chatting with. When that
tab is selected, and you see your chat partner’s name in
parentheses in the Chat pod title, you are chatting within your
private chat. When the Everyone tab is selected, and you see
“Everyone” in parentheses in the Chat pod title, you are chatting
within the public, Everyone chat.
Use this feature carefully! Make sure you’re in the correct chat
before sending any message and keep in mind that if you’re sending messages you wouldn’t want
anyone else to see by mistake, you should probably be using a different means of communication!
Click a private chat tab’s “x” to close the private chat.
Activating Your Audio
If you see a microphone icon in the top menu bar, and next to your name in
the Attendees pod, it means the Host has given you the ability to use your
microphone.
To activate your microphone, click either the microphone icon (in the menu
bar) or open the Audio drop menu associated with the microphone icon and
select “Connect My Audio.” When your microphone is enabled, the icon will
appear green.
Muting Your Audio
You can mute your audio by clicking the green microphone icon, which will then appear with a slash
through it.
Disconnecting Your Audio
You can deactivate your audio by selecting “Disconnect My Microphone” from the Audio drop menu.

Audio Setup Wizard
You can use the Audio Setup Wizard to set up your microphone the first time.
Your settings will be saved on that machine for any following sessions. To use
the Audio Setup Wizard, select it from the Meeting menu and then follow the
series of prompts to completion.
Other Microphone/Audio Options
In the Audio drop menu you can also:
Mute your microphone (you can also do this by clicking on the microphone icon when it’s
green/active. When muted, that icon will have slash through it)
Adjust microphone volume
Select a different microphone
Disconnect/de-activate your microphone
Note: These options only appear when your microphone is active.
Activating Your Webcam
If you see a webcam icon in the top menu bar, it means the Host has given
you the ability to use your webcam.
To activate your webcam, click the webcam icon in the top menu bar or
click “Start My Webcam” from within either the Video drop menu
associated with the webcam icon or the Video pod (if the Video pod is
currently displayed, which it must be for you to use your webcam).
The webcam icon will turn green, and you’ll see a preview of your webcam display in the Video pod.
Click “Start Sharing” to display your webcam.
Deactivating Your Webcam
You can end your webcam display by clicking the green webcam icon in the top menu bar or the
“Stop” button within the Video pod.
Sharing The Host can request that you share your screen. In such a case, a
message window will appear, asking if you want to accept (“Start”)
or decline the request.
If you accept the request, a Share pod will open on your screen.
Share Pods
Share pods give you ability to share parts of your screen, documents
and an editable whiteboard.

5
You can click any of the three share options—My Screen, Document and Whiteboard—to share
those items or open the Recently Shared menu to quickly re-share an item you’ve previously
shared, such as a document or previous whiteboard.
Share My Screen
There are three Share My Screen options: Desktop, Application and Window.
Desktop: Shares your entire desktop.
Application: shares an entire application. If you have multiple windows,
documents, browsers, etc. open within an application, like Firefox or Microsoft
Word, you will share all of them.
Window: shares a singular instance of an application. If you have multiple
windows, documents, etc. open within an application, you can choose which
individual one you want to share.
With Application and Window, you can open multiple Applications or Windows
at once by checking/selection multiple option boxes.
Share Document
There are multiple options in the Share Document panel
worth noting:
Share History tab: Displays recently shared documents.
Uploaded Files tab: Displays all the files you’ve uploaded.
Share a New Document
Browse My Computer: Select this button from the Share
Document panel to upload and share a new document.
Draw in Documents
With some shared documents, you have the option of opening and using Draw tools.
Look for the “Draw” button in the Share pod’s top-right corner.
Share Previous Whiteboards
In the Share Documents panel you’ll also see a Whiteboards tab. This tab allows you to open and
(re-)share previously used Whiteboards.
Sharing a New Whiteboard
Select Share Whiteboard from the Share My Screen menu to open and share a brand new
whiteboard. Whiteboard controls are fairly straightforward and include the ability to draw lines,
highlight, type text, create simple shapes, move elements and erase.

Status Options
Raise Hand
Raising your hand lets the Host know you have a question you’d like to ask (via your
microphone).
You can raise your hand by clicking the raised hand icon in the top menu bar. If the Host
approves your request, you’ll be granted the ability to use your microphone (if you
didn’t already have that ability/permission), but you must activate your audio to ask
your question.
Set Status
The drop menu associated with the raised hand icon allows you to set your status.
The first four status options are used for in-session interaction, such as raising a
hand to ask a question, agreeing or disagreeing with a point or letting people know
you’ve stepped away temporarily. These status options display in the Attendees pod
until they’re cleared or altered.
The other status options are used for presenter feedback and can let a presenter
know if they need to slow down, speak louder and more. These status options
display in the Attendees pod for only ten seconds.
Breakout Rooms The Host may choose to put you and other attendees in Breakout Rooms. While in a Breakout Room,
you will have full Presenter privileges. This means that you can share your screen, share content
and use your microphone and webcam without the Host having to give you those specific
permissions.
When in a Breakout Room, you can only communicate and share with
other attendees in the Breakout Room.
However, you can send a message to the Host(s) at any time by
clicking the Breakout Room icon on the right side of the top menu bar
and then selecting “Send message to hosts.”
Leaving the Session To exit a session/meeting room, simply close the window or tab.
