Admission Rate of Agriculture
Students in Nigeria
In 2010, Nigeria brought in over 1 billion dollars-worth of
rice, becoming the world’s second largest importer of rice.
The country spent over 4 billion dollars on food imports in
total.
Smallholders use traditional manual methods of farming,
with little money to invest in fertilisers, irrigation or
equipment.
The nation’s 50 million farmers have only around 30,000
tractors between them. They are therefore unable to
produce enough food to feed Nigeria’s huge population.
Nigeria’s food import may have hit N4.2 trillion yearly,
according to All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN),
2010
Facts:
The Federal Ministry of Agriculture has
admitted that the country’s yearly $11 billion
importation bill to meet the staple foods need
of Nigerians is troubling. The Minister of
Agriculture, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina, explained
that this staggering annual food spend, which
accounts for 35 % of the nation’s total budget,
could be channeled to meaningful
developmental projects.
Nigeria imported $4 Billion worth of wheat, $2
Billion of rice, $1.4 Billion of sugar, and $1
Billion of fish just in 2012 to show that it has
potentials in the Agriculture Sector.
A Nation’s ability to feed its population is a decisive
factor for its power, as stated by President Charles de
Gaulle: “A nation that cannot feed itself is not a great
nation”, or more recently by President George W. Bush:
“When we speak about agriculture, we are really
speaking about a national security issue.”
This study explores the Admission rate of the
Agriculture discipline, its effect on Food production,
Importation, Job creation and Implication on the
Nigerian economy.
According to Samuel Johnson, Agriculture is the true
riches of Nations, he stated: “Agriculture not only gives
riches to a nation, but the only riches she can call her
own.”
Agriculture Philosophy: A discipline devoted to the systematic critique of the philosophical
frameworks (or ethical world views) that are the foundation for
decisions regarding agriculture1. Production of graduates that are
adequately equipped with the comprehensive theoretical
knowledge and practical skills required for engaging in productive
and economic agricultural production.
Objectives: a) To produce graduates geared towards self-employment;
b) To produce graduates with sufficient technical, productive and
entrepreneurship skills who will be involved in production,
research and entrepreneurship in any aspect of agriculture and
other related disciplines;
c) To produce graduates that are relevant to themselves, the
industry and society and who can contribute effectively to
national development goals in Agriculture.
Nigeria has 128 Universities (as at August, 2013);

Historically, the Agriculture Discipline admit
more candidates than other Disciplines – about
50% are sure of Admission in most cases
Basically, it means more candidates who applied to
study Agriculture courses are admitted compared to
other disciplines, however this does not imply they
intend to take up a life-long approach to the discipline.
Most are actually using this as escape route and a
channel to get admission into higher institutions of their
choice. Since those who study the course are not
interested in the course, this might not be unconnected
to the fact that majority of Nigerian Farmers are aged
adults who have not gone through any formal training
on the Science of Farming.
Invariably, this is why Nigeria spend billions on
importation of those things that could as well be home
grown, even in larger quantity suitable for export.
The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development,
Akinwunmi Adesina said ”we spend $11 billion importing
food each year”
If the Federal and State
Governments vigorously pursue
the right policies, the country
can raise local rice production
from the current 500,000 MT
per annum to meet the national
demand of 2.5 million MT.
The country also has the capacity to achieve
self-sufficiency in Wheat, Fish, Sourghun
and Tomatoes, among others. But since
FAO named Nigeria in 2011 as one of the
four countries facing imminent food crisis,
our food import bill has been skyrocketing.
In 2011, the International Fund for
Agricultural Development described
Nigeria’s food situation as very vulnerable,
with the country unable to feed its 170
million people
We cannot continue to rely on
ageing farmers on small farms
to feed us. Policies should be
put in place to attract investors
into large-scale mechanized
farming and agro-processing
industries to wean the country
from its dependence on oil
revenues.
