In this age of globalised business, theports of this world are the relay stationsof the flow of goods. The focus there is on ever larger shipping units, evershorter turnaround times and efficientmovement of goods. A major challengefor everyone responsible for the loadingand unloading of goods.

Dockside cranes, as high-performanceinstruments, play a decisive role in thisprocess. They must always function precisely in all possible climatic zonesand fulfil the widest range of demandswith regard to handling capacity, ge-ometry and ground pressure limits, etc.

Q INFOSo what characterises the best mobile dockside cranes? What are the key factors?

Q Essentially:

– low operating costs – high performance– excellent mobility– minimised outrigger base

Q More precisely:

– efficient and safe handling of bulk goods and general cargo– comfortable working conditions for the crane operator– maximisation of handling capacity and thus short turnaround times of the ships– economical unloading and loading – low maintenance costs– long service life– free passage below high gantry

The Adler combines all these features.

THE THEORY: MAXIMUM HANDLING CAPACITY AND MAXIMUM MOBILITY. THE PRACTICE: THE ADLER. WITH THE DOUBLE JIB PRINCIPLE AND A MOVING HIGH GANTRY.

Mobile dockside cranes traditionally havemany advantages: they can be usedflexibly in the entire port area, they donot need any external power supply, they can be used for all bulk goods and containers. But: trucks and wagons cannot be moved below them – so theyimpede a real fluid flow of goods in the ports. And: mobile dockside cranes are generally single jib systems char-acterised by long rope swinging lengths. Until now. Because the Adler adds innovative ben-efits to the traditional advantages ofmobile dockside cranes: greater efficien-cy thanks to the double jib principle;improved mobility on the quay thanks tothe high gantry. Plus added flexibilitythanks to a range of alternative versions.

Greater efficiencyArdelt invented the double jib level luff-ing principle back in 1932 – and hasdeveloped it further ever since. It consists

Q INFOTypical Adler

– extremely productive: short load paths, short rope and swinging lengths thanks to the double-jib principle

– very mobile: moving high gantry allows all kinds of traffic to pass underneath

– highly versatile: thanks to a range of different versions and the possibility of working with different kinds of load handling equipment

THE TECHNICAL CONCEPT.

of four elements: A-frame, main jib, tiejib and cantilever jib. The main point ofthis special geometry is: it ensures that the desired horizontal load path isrealised mechanically. Without having to use energy from the hoisting mecha-nism. In this context the downwardpointing boom is characteristic: it deci-sively reduces the free swinging ropelength.

This means (above all in comparison to single-jib cranes): the horizontal loadpath and the proximity of the boom tothe load allow outstanding performanceof the crane. Thanks to the short ropeswinging lengths, even in wind, loads canbe positioned easily and precisely – ahuge advantage in all operational situa-tions. The Adler thus stands for high

handling capacity, a horizontal load pathand short swinging lengths.

Another double-jib advantage alsoapplies to the Adler: even in the unlikelyevent of the luffing gear failing the boomcannot come crashing down. It is heldabsolutely securely by the tie jib. And:the optimum rope guide minimises thebending load of the ropes, increases theirservice life – and thus reduces oper-ating costs.

A further technically characteristic fea-ture of the Adler is its mobile high gantry. It has no props and undercarriage, thusenabling all forms of land transport to drive through underneath it. As such, unrestricted handling is guaranteed forthe first time ever even on narrow quays.

ADLERADLER

THERE ARE MANY REASONS FORCHOOSING THE ADLER. HERE ARETHE MOST IMPRESSIVE:

02 THE HOISTING MECHANISMWe have optimised our lifting gear overdecades so we can guarantee maximumperformance and availability. As stan-dard they are fitted with compact, power-ful and modularly structured planetarygears. That means savings in weight andcosts.

01 THE LUFFING GEARThe Adler’s luffing gear consisting of arack and pinion system is extremely safe and robust, easy to maintain andindependent of climatic conditions. In comparison to hydraulic and spindle luffing gear it stands out with loweroperating costs.

03 THE SLEWING GEARThe slewing gear operates with compact,low-maintenance planetary gears. Thelarge roller bearing slewing ring is fixedvia the Superbolt® system consisting ofspecial high tensioning bolts and nuts.

08 THE COLUMNThe column, another module in the overall concept of the Adler, is designedas a compact construction. Inside theslewing gears and the patented hydraulicdead weight compensation are housed. The electrical connections between the column and the equally modularlydesigned machine house are providedby disconnect boxes, or plug con-nections. The slewing ring in turn isfixed at the gantry and the column –using Superbolt® tension nuts.

06 THE TRAVEL MECHANISMWith the Adler travel mechanism weprofit from the experience of our Kran-union partner Kirow: it is designed onthe basis of the proven Kirow runninggear solutions for heavy load trans-porters. The running gear consists offour separate drives that are controlledsynchronously. The manoeuvrability ofthe wheels allows turning of the craneby 360° on the spot.

05 THE SUPPORT SYSTEMThe Adler is supported by means ofhydraulically lowerable cantileverslocated between the travel mechanisms.Supported by the load distribution pads, the crane is lifted, but not entirely,it also remains partly on the stabilisingtyres for optimal load distribution. The decisive advantage of the can-tilevers moving within the gantry is:there are no hindrances of any kind to port traffic. The arrangement of the cantileversallows the erection of the Adler directlyon the edge of the quay – and driving it away quickly if necessary.

07 THE JIB SYSTEMThe Adler’s jib system corresponds tothe thousandfold proven double jibprinciple, with one innovative change:we have done away with the counter-weight lever (for weight reasons) infavour of a hydraulic load compensationintegrated in the column. One can say that the approx. 32 m long main jib is the element that givesthe Adler its distinctive shape. It isdesigned as a faceted volume in a mul-tiple canted solid structure – and thushas a high degree of rigidity taking into account the low weight.

09 THE DRIVER’S CABINA premium feature of the Adler is thedriver’s cabin designed according to thelatest ergonomic findings: it is placed on the mast frame and infinitely height-adjustable – from 12 to 26 m. It allowsoptimal visibility of the loading or un-loading processes and as an additionalfunction of being an elevator an idealaccess to the drive and control compo-nents because the platforms can also be easily reached. The maintenance platforms at the back of the column are equally easilyaccessible.

04 THE DRIVE UNITThe drive unit elements – power pack, electric control container and the hoistmechanisms – are housed in modules, each of which can be transported in ahigh-cube container. The same appliesto the gantry’s cross-beams, uprightunits and running gear. A cost benefitfor you. The modular nature of the systemhas a further advantage in that shortassembly time equates to the fast set-upand dismantling of the equipment and,as such, potentially high resale values.
