Introduction – Key factors for ConnectedTV success
• IPTV, HybridTV and WebTV is nothing new, started many years ago.
• What has changed ? Why now?
• Broadband widely available in households
• sufficient bandwidth, affordable
• Internet services are commodity
• Devices
• more powerful, ubiquitous computing, hybrid
• Flat Screen, hi resolution
• Evolved Web Standards & Tools
• HTML, JS, CSS
Introduction – Services
What is the killer app for TVs ?
• Mobile apps can hardly be ported onto TV:
• Remote control
• Viewing distance (10-foot UX)
• Lean-back mentality / passive consumption
• Shared viewing experience
Mobile apps exploit the features of smartphone devices!!!

Introduction – What is the killer app for TVs ?
Video is !
Introduction - Growth of IP Traffic and Non-PC Devices
In 2016, the gigabyte equivalent of all movies ever made will cross global IP networks every 3 minutes.
It would take over 138 years to watch the amount of video that will cross global IP networks every second in 2016.
Video-on-demand traffic will triple by 2016. The amount of VoDtraffic in 2016 will be equivalent to 4 billion DVDs per month.
The number of devices connected to IP networks will be nearly three times as high as the global population in 2016.
In 2011, 22 percent of IP traffic originated with non-PC devices, but by 2016 the non-PC share of IP traffic will grow to 31 percent.

Reasons to set on multi-screen apps?Changed user/viewer behavior is the driving factor
23
The end user role.
“77% of Internet users are surfing while watching television.”(BITKOM, “Zapping 2.0”, June 2012)
“77% of the time when we’re using a TV, we’re using another device.”(Google, “The New Multi-screen World: Understanding Cross-platform Consumer Behavior”, August 2012)
“Almost 60% of Internet users would rather give up sweets than the Internet”(Yahoo! Germany, “Vertical Study On Connected Devices”, March 2012)
The content provider possibilities.
Getting more of user’s attention
Making the user discover new content
The broadcaster opportunities.
“25% of german viewers watched the olympic games in London from PC or mobile.” (BITKOM, “Olympia 2012: Durchbruch für Internet-TV”, August 2012)
Feedback channel. The user is not muted anymore, Example case:
– The live-act shows during the transmission of the olympic games 2012 closing ceremony were accompanied by intrusive commentary.
– This led to a intense “Shitstorm” on social media and the provision of an uncommented live-stream by the broadcaster.

Standards – Hybrid TV + Web Standards
As content providers are diversifying their target audience…
– common authoring basis to address those different devices(Internet,TV, tablets, mobiles)
– faster authoring time for simple applications or reuse of existing solutions (e.g. reuse of backend and only frontend adaptations)
– benefit from the WWW community and capitalize on existing content of the Web.
– Browser as common denominator
Standards – HbbTV
• HbbTV is a key technology for Hybrid TV
– ETSI TS 102 796 V1.2.1 (Nov 2012)
Based on: ETSI TS 102 796 V1.1.1, errata 2 to V1.1.1, HbbTV 1.5

Standards – HbbTV
• Broadcast-related vs. Broadcast-independent (how to access HbbTV apps)
– Broadcast-independent application
not associated with any broadcast service
downloaded via broadband and accesses all of its associated data via broadband
– Broadcast-related application
associated with one or more broadcast services or one or more broadcast events within a service
may be launched automatically ("autostart") or explicitly upon user request.
may be downloaded broadband or broadcast and may access its data via either

HbbTV draws from other open standards
– CEA-2014 (CE-HTML)
– OIPF DAE & A/V formats
– ETSI TS 102 809
– W3C specifications
TV app platforms are different!!!
– Samsung has 1000+ apps available and
ten million downloads
– LG, Toshiba and TP Vision define common
platform - (HTML/HbbTV-based)
– And many more
Expensive for content providers to deploy one service to all TV platforms
BUT, common basis is (CE-) HTML + JavaScript

Concluding thoughts
“Understand Media” – TV/video is part of it – be a Media Expert
Be on all screens – think multiscreen / digital natives expect you to be everywhere – all others will follow
Do video and put it on all channels – image videos work
TV is getting interactive – use the back channel
– Turn a broadcast medium into a 1:1 channel
– Help your customers by prolonging their TV campaigns
Involve viewers to pull them into your “Ecosystem”
If you go for TV please don’t put (to much) text on the big screen
