After all, chewing gum seems like such a harm-less—no, even smart—habit. You want something sweet? Pop a stick of gum for less than 5 calories (better than a candy bar, right?). Stressed? Chew a couple sticks of gum (preferable to chewing out a coworker, no?). Feeling hungry? Chomp some gum while you think about your options (as in, hit the brakes before you end up knuckle-deep in the chips). What’s not to like? How about IBS and junk

food binges, just to name a few unwelcome conse-quences of your gum habit. People are not likely to develop addiction to bubble gum, but the habit of having something to chew in their mouths all the time means they come to depend on it. Some people also chew gum by pleasure because they make them feel so cool and attractive so when they have a gum in their mouths they develop a different personality in the outside world.

FACTThe largest bubble ever blown was 23 inches in diameter. The record was set in July 19, 1994 by Susan Montgomery Williams

from California.

(Guinness Book of Records, 1998).

7 Gross side effects of chewing gum...

Chewing gum before a meal is often recommended as a way to reduce hunger and also to eat less. But a recent study published in The journal Eating Be-haviors debunks this belief. The study showed gum chewing not only had no effect on calories con-sumed, but chewing mint-flavored gum reduced the intake of healthy food (fruit) and increased the

likelihood of eating junk food such as potato chips and candy. Researchers believe the minty flavor of the gum gave fruits and vegetables a very strong and bad bitter flavor. So now, try sipping a cup of green tea before and after a meal to curb your ap-petite instead, which not only will make you eat healthy but also help you lose weight!

It can trigger TMJ:#2

For some people chewing gum is bad because it can lead to mouth disorders like temporomandib-ular joint disorder (TMJ), which includes jaw pain associated with the chewing muscles and joints that connect your lower jaw to your skull. Ouch!!! “Overuse of any muscle and joint can lead to pain and problems,” says Don Atkins, DDS, a dentist in Long Beach, California. Many people end up with contracted muscles of the jaw, head, and neck,

which can lead to headaches, earaches, or tooth-aches over time. But even if you don’t have a seri-ous problem, excessive gum chewing can aggra-vates the cartilage and surrounding joints in the mouth through extra wear and tear. You can eat an apple instead, which satisfies the urge to chew and reduces your risk of cardiovascular disease at the same time, and it is also a lot healthy for your body and helps when you are hungry too.

Chewing gum brings in an excess of swallowed air which can put pressure on the intestine and cause cramping and bloating. And for those who suffer from IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) this can be really bad. IBS is a GI disorder characterized by abdominal pain, cramping, and changes in bow-el habits. “Chewing gum can contribute to IBS, as

excess air can be swallowed, which contributes to abdominal pain and bloating,” says Patrick Taka-hashi, MD, chief of gastroenterology at St. Vincent Medical Center, Los Angeles, California. In addition to swallowing air, artificial sweeteners such as sor-bitol and mannitol can cause diarrhea in otherwise healthy people.

You’re chewing a sheep by-product:#4

Lanolin, an ingredient found in skincare products, keeps chewing gum soft. It doesn’t sound too bad until you find out it’s a yellow waxy substance se-creted by the sebaceous glands of sheep. Known as “wool fat,” lanolin is harvested by squeezing the sheep’s harvested wool between rollers. “In the

amounts utilized in chewing gum, it hardly poses a threat to one’s health, although the thought of di-gesting it may be a bit unsavory,” says Dr. Taka-hashi. Unsavory indeed. Do you imagine chewing in your mouth part of a sheep? Think about it now before you put some gum in your mouth!

Most gum these days love to market that they are “sugar free,” but artificial sweeteners are far from my “okay to eat” real food list. Aspartame is just an example that has been linked to brain tumors, birth defects, and cancer. Read why I don’t trust the stuff here. But even the “safer” sweeteners are suspicious for this “back to basics, just eat what we recognize as real food” gal. Just because you

don’t generally ingest your gum doesn’t mean it doesn’t go in your body: The ingredients in gum travel into the bloodstream faster and in higher concentrations than other food ingredients does, because they absorb straight through the walls of the mouth of your stomach, and these ingredients do not undergo the normal filtration process of di-gestion. It is really bad for our bodies, isnt it?

Artificial Sweeteners:#5

Yikes! That’s pretty scary when you think about some of the common ingredients listed on a pack of chewing gum:

Gum Base

Maltitol

Mannitol

Artificial and ‘Natural’ Flavoring

Acacia

Acesulfame Potassiu

BHT

Calcium Casein Peptone-calcium Phosphate

Candelilla Wax

Sodium Stearate

Titanium Dioxide

Chewing gum doesnt get rid of BAD BREATH:#6

I remember how “minty clean” my mouth would feel after chewing a piece of gum (for a min-ute or two, at least), but gum doesn’t get rid of bad breath. Bad breath is symptom of digestive problems or excessive tooth decay. In fact, once I changed my diet and improved my health through real food I no longer had bad breath. Real food for

the win! The gum “absorbs” all our little pieces of food that are already in our mouth and tooth, it starts to smell bad after a few minutes and start loosing their flavor. If you only chew gum because of having a good smell in your mouth, you are wrong, stop doing that and start worrying about your digestive problems, and consult your doctor!

If you’ve been around the Thank Your Body site for a while you know how important metabolic health is. But did you know that chewing gum, which stimulates saliva production for an unnaturally long time, can take away from other important

metabolic functions? Crazy, right? Your metabo-lism is such as important as your body, because it is healthy to have a good metabolism. If you hinder this, you will not only gain a lot of weight, but you

can be a lot slower and stressed by things in life.
