AMU is one of the largest academic centers in Poland. In addition to its facilities in Poznan, it has campuses in Gniezno, Kalisz, Pila and Slubice. The University currently employs nearly 3,000 teaching staff, including 345 tenured professors, 550 AMU professors and over 1,600 doctors and senior lecturers. Since 2002 our professors have coordinated or have been partners in over 50 research projects funded by the European Union Framework Programs for Research and Technological Development (from FP5 to FP7). AMU is strongly dedicated to creating high-standard educational opportunities. The University serves over 47,000 students with 15 faculties offering BA, MA and PhD programs. Students who know Polish can choose from over 170 majors. The newest programs include National Security, Biophysics with Nano-Bio-Med component, Geoecology, as well as new language programs such as Latvian Studies and South African Studies. r descriptionThe student of the unique Balkan studies gains the practical knowledge of two regional languages – one is Slavonic

chosen from the group of following languages: Bulgarian/Macedonian/Serbian (level B1) and one non-Slavonic from amongAlbanian, Greek, Romanian and Turkish (level B1). The practical knowledge of those languages is supplemented withcomprehensive studies of Balkan contemporary literature and current cultural, social, political and economictransformations in the Balkans. The interdisciplinary character of the programme, including research methods of languageand literature studies, ethnology, history and political science gives knowledge about the lingustic, ethnic and politicalconditions, including the identity issues, and their current forms in Balkan countries. The specific merger of those four realmsof science leads to the attainment of skills necessary to synthesizing and applying those theories in practice. Students learnto think in terms of the dialectics of analysis and synthesis, to formulate and verify hypotheses and evaluate the currentcultural, politic and economic phenomena in the Balkans. The graduate will be highly competent in cultural and socialanalysis. Prospective jobs include national and self-government administration, national institutions, European Unionauthorities, cultural, educational, publishing institutions, foundations, economic institutions and mass media. A graduate ofthe unique Balkan studies will be well prepared to undertake research and enter PhD studies.

r descriptionLanguages and Literature The three-year course of studies includes classes from general and applied linguistics

(morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics) and international languages – both ethnic languages which have been a linguafranca: from Aramaic, through Latin to English and planned languages, from the philosophical languages of the MiddleAges through Esperanto to the latest proposals. The focus of the studies is Esperanto as the only planned language to havespread across the world. The grammar, literature and history of Esperanto are examined in depth. Another importantcomponent of the studies is intercultural communication. The language of instruction is Esperanto. One session persemester (in September and February). During the intensive week long session in Poznan there are examinations and four10-hour courses. During the semester students working on assignments given out during the session can consult lecturersby email and the programme’s internet platform. Programme is also learned in Esperanto.
