What is Acupuncture?

a Chinese medical practice or procedure that treats illness or provides local anesthesia by the insertion of needles at specified sites of the body.

Page 3: Acupuncture 2

How old is it ?Its origins have dated back some 2500 years, It has been widely used in China for its medical system.  It is possible that pre-historic Chinese used crude needling practices (e.g. tattooing) to treat musculoskeletal pain. But it was a much less organized system of healing, and not unlike other pre-historic cultures. See http://aim.bmj.com/content/31/1/2.full, and http://www.iceman.it/en/node/262.

How does it work? After asking many questions on your first visit. Your practitioner will diagnose you in Chinese medicine. We will take your pulse and look at you tongue.

Then arrive a treatment plan and treat you with very fine single use sterile needles and or other modalities.

How does it work ?

If you notice, you will see how tiny Acupuncture needles are. (blue arrow)

The needles will be places on points that run along energy channels that usually run vertically along the body. Each point stimulated has a different purpose, basically the reaction is to tell the body that it has to start working or slow down. This is controlled by the body's ability to provoke homeostasis. (a balance of energy in the meridians)

Some Modalities Acupuncture can be helped with different treatment modalities techniques, like…Moxibustion - (1) Using prepared medicine sticks that apply warmth to specific parts of the body or used to heat the needles.

A combination of both cupping and moxa can be used. (1A) The 2nd set of pictures is the result of cupping. Cupping is used to remove toxins, wind, heat (fever) or remove stagnation from the body. The red marks usually disappear in any where from a few hours to a week. ( This depends on the constitution of the person and their condition)

(3) Electro-acupuncture is used to help with back spasms and lower back pain. Asthma in children as well.

(4) Raw Herbs and (5) Formulas in tea pills, usually recommended to help with all types of conditions.

Acupuncture Acupuncture is a holistic way of

balancing the body.

It is not a fast way of healing, it takes time, exercise, herbals and a balanced diet.

Depending on your ailment treatments are individualized.

Every “body” is different.

Usually it takes about 3 rounds of 12 treatments to stabilize patients.

*Again this depends on the patient, their condition, age, severity. Some see results faster or slower

Page 14: Acupuncture 2

Adverse effects Acupuncture side effects

are not fixed and depend on the mode of treatment and ability of a patient to respond to it. The most common of these are:

a risk of hematoma(bleeding under the skin) or bruising.

nausea, vomiting, headache, lightheadedness, fatigue, fainting and anxiety. (some people are really scared of needles)

All these can also happen when your blood is drawn by a phlebotomist

These are the most common side effects of acupuncture, but these may be controlled if the treatment is executed correctly.

Hematomas can happen with anyone, unfortunately no one has a map where the capillaries and veins and arteries lie In every “body”.

Make sure that you tell your practioner if you are on any blood thinners.

THIS IS AN EXTREME CASE OF A HEMATOMA… "CAUSED BY BLOOD DRAWING." PICTURE ABOVE.

This hematoma could have been caused by trauma or an Acu needleFor the most part we are very careful

Acupuncture Imperial data is being

collected the results are published all the time. (See link PubMed)

There are studies on going with the results of Acupuncture treatments.

Of coarse there are many opinions as to the results but the proof is in the pudding.
