    En quinze ans, nous avons pu assister a un extraordinaire renversement de reputation. En 1965, la cote d'Eugene Viollet le Duc (1814- 1879) est au plus bas: on lui reproche son neo-gothique de mauvais goilt et une d6sas- treuse manie de la restauration; a Paris, une exposition lui est consacree: elle rencontre in- diffhrence ou hostilite. Puis, 1980, avec un an de retard sur son centenaire, sera une annte Viollet le Duc: reeditions, expositions, dithy- rambes, colloque international avec treize pays representes, dont sont ici magnifique- ment publiees 31 communications. Le vent a tourne, pour des raisons rv61latrices d'une profonde evolution culturelle: ces Actes, pu- blies par les soins attentifs de Pierre-Marie Auzas, inspecteur general des Monuments historiques, en portent temoignage. Trois par- ties: le theoricien, le restaurateur et le crea- teur, I'influence.

    La derniere partie nous entraine en Croatie, en Autriche, en Norvege, en Hongrie, en Polo- gne, en Angleterre, aux Pays-Bas, en Belgi- que, et mdme au Japon et aux Etats-Unis. La premiere nous met en contact avec la penste scientifique et mathematique et pose les pro- blemes de l'evolution de l'architecture au XIXe siecle. On regrettera ici l'absence de la communication de Jean-Yves Hameline, ( Viollet le Duc et le mouvement liturgique au XIXe sicle ~, parue dans La Maison-Dieu, 142, 1980, p. 57-86.

    Trois communications retiendront ici notre attention. L'une d'apparence anecdotique: la decouverte de Jacques Chailley, a la suite de ses recherches sur La Fldte enchantee de Mozart, d'un medaillon place par V. au centre mime du portail central de Notre- Dame de Paris, et dont s'impose l'interpr~ta- tion alchimique-esoterique: plaisanterie d'un

    futur d6pute radical, pense-t-il, trop vite sans doute en jugera J.P. Laurant. La seconde, de caractere institutionnel, est trbs neuve: Jean- Michel Leniaud y presente le peu connu ser- vice des Edifices diocesains dont V. fut le pa- tron de 1848 a 1874 et qui avait alors plus d'importance (et de moyens) que celui -ri- val- des Monuments historiques (c'est en 1912 seulement que les cath6drales passeront du premier au second). La dernibre, de Louis Grodecki, domine ce volume: elle analyse le positivisme de V., montrant comment son ro- mantisme s'oppose a la fois au romantisme es- thetique et au romantisme catholique; plus que ses theses historiques, insuffisantes, compte sa doctrine architecturale, affirmation d'une methode au regard de laquelle ( tout est fonction de la structure, . Son rationalisme ne fut pas une tentative isolke dans son siecle: il correspondait a l'evolution des id6es et des techniques. I1 ne fut pas davantage le dernier mot: dans un siecle feru d'exptrience, celle-ci vint des bombardements de la Grande Guerre, o lI'on vit des voites et des structures tenir malgre la theorie...

    Un seul regret: l'homme n'apparait qu'a travers le theoricien et le realisateur. On eilt aime savoir qui il etait, quelles influences il avait subies, comment il s'etait form6 et avait evolue. Tout ce qu'on a su nous expliquer sur Fustei de Coulanges, son contemporain un peu plus jeune.
