Regression?

• Dictionary meaning= returning back or going back

• First used by Sir Francis Galton in 1877• Today it means estimating line or a line

representing relation between two variables. • We can predict with the help of regression

analysis. • There are (min.) two variables : dependent

and independent.

Solution

• ∑ X = Na + b ∑Y• 30 = 5*a + b *40

• ∑XY = A ∑Y + B ∑Y^2• 214 = A *40 + B *340 • Thus we have two equations : • 30 = 5a + 40b (let us multiply this by 8) • 214=40a + 340b


Solution…

• 240 = 40a + 320b

• 214=40a + 340b (now deducting 2nd from first).

• (240 – 214) = (40a – 40a) + (320 b – 340 b)

• 26 = -20 B or B = -26/20

• B = -1.3


Finding A

• Let us multiply the first equation by 6 so that we may equate the two equations and deduct the second from the first.


• 240 = 30*a + 180b• 214 = A *30 + B *220 • 26 = -40 B• B = - 26/40 • B = - .65 (putting the value of B in the first

equation, we get A) • 40 = 5*a + (-.65) *30 or 5a = 40 + 19.5• A = 11.9• Thus we can say that • Y = 11.9 + (-.65) X
