The Worthing CollegeSports Academy

Enhance your sports performance and further your academic studies

What is the Sports Academy? The Worthing College Sports Academy provides aspiring young sports-people with the opportunity to enhance their sports performance and further their academic study. The Sports Academy is structured to ensure students can choose from our wide range of academic courses. The Sports Academy consists of the following squads and is available to both male and female performers:

• Basketball• Dance • Football • Golf • Hockey • Netball • Rugby • Tennis

Sport at Worthing College is going from strength to strength, in 2007 we achieved the Specialist Sports College of the year award. The Rugby programme has been awarded Beacon status by the RFU and our Golf programme has achieved England Golf AASE Academy status. We have also been shortlisted for the 2009 Sussex Sports Innovation in Education Award.

Academy staff are highly skilled, they deliver a quality programme including video analysis, strength and conditioning, skill development and team preparation for the weekly Wednesday fixture.Academysquadscompeteinlocal, regionaland national competitions.

Which academic courses can I choose? All Academy members follow full time level 1, 2, or 3 programmes. Academy applicants at level 2 or 3 who wish to follow a vocational route are advised to study either a BTEC First or a BTEC National Diploma in Sport or Public Services.A level students are advised to include AS PE in theirfirstyearoptionsortheBTECNationalAwardin Sport Science.

How will my Sports Academy work be assessed? Each Academy student is issued a performance log which is used to record progress. These logs focus on performance, conditioning, goal setting, sports psychology and nutrition. The log is a crucial component to the regular individual discussion each Academy student has with their coach.

Academy students will be subject to regular fitnessandperformancetestingthatwillbeusedto measure progress. Year 12 level 3 Academy students also complete the Community Sports Leader Award (CSLA) during the summer term. The CSLA provides an opportunity to develop and hone existing sports leadership and coaching skills. In addition to the CSLA and the main programme of study students are encouraged

to undertake a level 1 NGB (National Governing Bodies)coachingorofficialaward.

Are there any specific entry requirements for the Academy? The selection process is very competitive. Students are required to purchase the Academy kit package which costs up to £150. In addition to the cost of kit each Academy student is required to pay a travel subsidy of £25 per annum.

It is important to note that the Academy is a one year programme. Academy students sign a charter agreement at the start of September which outlines our expectations of them and that existing academy members will re-trial annually with all new applicants. Academy students are expected to meet high attendance, punctuality and performance standards and failure to meet these standards will jeopardise their Academy place.

Our Tennis and Golf Academy squads train at local clubs. The Tennis is based at the West Worthing Club and the Golf is based at Worthing Golf Club. Students from both the Tennis and Golf squads are required to take up junior membership at the clubs. The junior rate will be available to the students for as long as they are an Academy member. We are also able to arrange host families for students wishing to join the Academy from out of the area or overseas. This requirement must be clearly stated at the time of application.

The Sports Academy supports the Chestnut Tree House which is the only children’s hospice in Sussex. Chestnut Tree House cares for children and young adults from 0-19 years of age with progressive life-limiting and life-threatening illnesses from all over the county. The hospice provides a 'home from home' environment with 10 children's bedrooms plus 8 family rooms, a wet and dry play area, computer and music rooms, a multi sensory room and hydrotherapy pool. The hospice costs approximately £2 million per year to run. Families are not charged for their care and the hospice receives very little government funding so it relies almost entirely on the generosity, help and support of the people of Sussex. The inaugural Sports Academy ‘pier to pier’ walk raised in excess of £4,500. This is planned to become an annual event and for 2010 takes place on Friday 24 September.
