ABSTRACT
In this report gasification and gas cleaning techniques for biomass are treated. The mainreason for gasifying biomass is to refine the fuel to make it suitable as vehicle fuel or in
industrial processes. The focus is on production of synthesis gas that can be used for
production of vehicle fuel. Depending on application different types of gasifiers, gasification
techniques and process parameters are of interest.
A gasification technique has been identified as suitable for syngas generation, mainly due to
the fact that they allow the production of a nitrogen free gas out of the gasifier; Indirect
gasification.
urthermore, there are plants that, through gasification of carbonaceous materials, produce
electricity and heat or provide industrial processes with a clean fuel. The gas composition is
normally not as critical in stationary applications as in the production process of synthetic
fuels for the transportation sector.
Increased competition for biofuels will inevitably lead to higher raw material costs. This in
turn means that the fuel chains with high efficiency, such as biomethane through gasificationand methanation, are favored. The lower the investment cost, the lower the financial risk.
This implies that techniques that are relatively cost!effective in the smaller scale may benefit
initially. As the technology develops and e"perience is built up the plant si#e will increase.
