ALTERNATIVE PROGRAMSNEW BEGINNINGS: New Beginnings is an optional alternative education program for pregnant or parenting teens in the Mid-Del School District. It is so named because students who become pregnant, find themselves faced with many “new beginnings” in their lives; the beginning of a new life, as birth of the baby nears, the new role of parent should she decide to keep the baby, the new dimension to relationships with family and peers, and the realities of adult life. The challenges and fears of the future may be overwhelming and few things in the mother’s life remain the same. The goal is to help these students face the future with as much support and information as possible to ensure healthy, productive lives for themselves and their babies.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES: • Provide alternative academic instruction for pregnant or parenting high school students in the Mid-Del

School District.

• Increase the likelihood that pregnant or parenting students will remain in school through graduation.

• Provide counseling, referral services, information and emotional support.

• Provide adult mentors to serve as positive role models.

• Provide knowledge and skills for positive parenting.

SWAPS: The SWAPS program offers students ages 16-18 in the Mid-Del District the opportunity to resume their education. This program is unique because its academic component is coupled with the possibility of occupational training.

Students choose from strictly academic instruction or a combination of academic instruction and Career Tech instruction. Three sessions are available: 7:50-10:25; 11:25-1:50; or 2:00-6:00. Small groups allow individualized training and personalized instruction.

STARS: The STARS program provides students who are at risk of dropping out of school the opportunity to continue their education in an individualized self-paced environment. This unique program combines an academic component with occupational training. Students spend half of their school day working on academic subjects (English, Math, Science, and History) plus individual and occupational counseling. They spend the other half of their school day working in a CareerTech Program of their choice.

ADMISSIONS: Initial referrals for an alternative program must come from the student’s sending school. The student and parent must attend a conference with a MDTC counselor prior to admission. The student should obtain a credit check form and a transcript from their high school counselor to bring with them to the conference.
