The idea was simple. Teachers wanted to copy from television for teaching. Filmmakers wanted to be paid for this use of their work. Screenrights was set up to make this happen. This presentation is an introduction to Screenrights and its services.

Making it easy for audiences to use TV

Screenrights began licensing Australian schools, TAFEs and universities to copy from television and radio for use in teaching in 1990.

Educational copying in New Zealand

Online communication of copied programs in educational institutions

Retransmission of free to air broadcasts on pay TV and mobile phones

Government copying of TV & radio

In 2007/08 Screenrights collected $30.1 million from its licences.

Paying filmmakers for their work

Screenrights distributes the money it collects to the rightsholders in the programs, after deducting its overheads only.

In 2007/08 expenses were only 14.8 % of collections.
