Mural Arts began in 1984 as part of the Philadelphia Anti-Graffiti Network’s effort to eradicate the graffiti crisis plaguing the city. Artist Jane Golden was hired to reach out to graffiti writers and redirect their energies from destructive graffiti writing to constructive mural painting. The collaborative effort of mural-making provided a support structure through which budding artists who otherwise lacked opportunities could develop their skills and take an active role in beautifying their communities. In 1996, the Anti-Graffiti Network was reorganized into the Mural Arts Program with Golden as its director. Soon after, golden established the Philadelphia Mural Arts Advocates, making Mural Arts a unique public/private partnership between the city agency and nonprofit organization. Today, Mural Arts has become one of the largest public arts initiatives of its kind, producing over 3,500 murals and educating over 30,000 under-served youth in its first 30 years. The Mural Arts Program’s success is in large part due to its faith in three simple words, three words Jane Golden herself uses as a personal and professional mantra: Art Saves Lives. It is with this conviction that the organization looks forward to continually enhancing its programs and embarking on special initiatives that will continue to challenge and inspire the many individuals whose lives are touched by Philadelphia’s murals. About Mural Arts Tours Each tour is led by an experienced guide, who will share the stories behind the art, including the people, places, and themes of each mural. Along the way, learn about the mural making process, the culture of the neighborhoods, and how the murals compliment their environment. Below is a list of the many different neighborhood and themed routes that are offered, accompanied by a sampling of the many murals showcased along the way.
