alan Barnes & Brian Kellock
CARMELITE LIBRARY, 8PM, £15
Quintessential jazz in the intimate surroundsof the Library. The classic art of improvisingon the tunes of the great American songbook, and a few jazz “standards” is becoming a rarity. It requires musicians with encyclopaedic musical knowledge, great harmonic understanding, a love of melodiesand virtuosity on their instrument. Fortunately, saxophonist Barnes, and pianistKellock, are masters of all these trades, butnever show-off. They’re always too busy having fun; telling gags; and engrossing audiences in their love of playing jazz. Unmissable.
ralph alessi Baida QuartetTHE BLUE LAMP, 8PM, £12.50 (£11.50)
“Unstoppably inventive” said The New YorkTimes about cutting edge trumpeter, Alessi. Ifyou want to hear where jazz is now in the cre-ative cauldron of New York - “Baida” are playingthe hippest club in town, The Village Vanguardas we write. They are also releasing their newalbum “Quiver” on state of the art record label,ECM – this is a band that features four of themost revered contemporary jazz musicians inNew York: Alessi (trumpet), Gary Versace(piano), Drew Gress (bass), and Nasheet Waits(drums). They’re brilliant players taking jazz tonew places, courtesy of Alessi’s music: “asclean and airy and sophisticated and disciplinedas post-modern progressive jazz gets” (JazzTimes). PRESENTED IN
