This figured bass was written by a student of J.S. Bach, Johann Kirnberger, and is takenfrom his important text "The Art of Strict Musical Composition." The passage begins in a C and modulates to G. The same phrase is then presented in G and modulates to D.
After working out the given bass, continue the pattern as follows. Transpose the basslineto D, then work out the figures in that key. Continue along to A. At that point,switch from 3 sharps to 3 flats and write in Eb major, then continue the modulation around cycle of fifths to Bb and finally to F. You'll end up back in C major.
