Library Saves Our Citizens Money

Based on circulation statistics,

community room usage, and li-

brary program attendance,

Coffeyville Public Library saved

the citizens of Coffeyville over

$1,535,492 in 2016. This

means the citizens of Coffeyville

would have had to spend $1.5

million out of their pockets to

purchase the resources and ser-

vices the library offers to the

community for free.

Library Gets a Facelift In late 2016 the Coffeyville Public Library Foundation

funded the remodel of the library's Community Room

and the purchase of new computer desks.

The new computer desks al lowed for

the addition of four new computers for

public use. We now have three comput-

ers for children, four computers for

young adults, and twelve computers for

adult use. Our computer usage saw an in-

crease after the install of the new desks and computers. In

2016 the public logged into these computers over 15,000

times--that's an average of 50 logins everyday! The Com-

munity Room remodel included a new paint job and instal-

lation of a new kitchenette. The Community Room is

available for public use for private parties, meetings, etc.

On Your Mark, Get Set...READ! The 2016 National

Summer Reading (SRP) theme encompassed fitness,

healthy living, and wellness with tie ins to the Summer

Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Our SRP followed the na-

tional theme and was kicked off with

a visit from KC Wolf of the Kansas

City Chiefs. We held over forty pro-

grams for people of all ages during the

summer months and had over 1000

participants!

Some of our most popular events for

SRP included a yoga class for kids

(see picture below), a visit from a mu-

sical group, installation of a Story-

Walk at LeClere Park, and a perfor-

mance by a professional juggler. Each

program was aimed at encouraging

people to embrace a healthy lifestyle by exercising

more, making healthy food choices, and understanding

the importance of feed your body and mind.

Children learned breathing techniques and how to

properly stretch with Miss Vickie, our Yoga instructor.

She explained how breathing can help calm your nerves

in stressfully situations and taught the children yoga po-

sitions that were then used to tell a story.

Our Children’s librarian hosted a Silly Sock Hop and

taught the children ‘50s style dancing

and the musical group Percussion

Magic brought drums and other noise

makers to show the kids how exercis-

ing could be fun!

While the kids love to attend the pro-

grams offered during the summer, we

encourage the kids to participate all

summer long by reading books at

home. We hope to keep their minds

active over the summer to prevent the

’summer slide’ or the tendency for

students to lose the skills and

knowledge they gained during the

previous school year. We have all kids keep a reading

log and for every five books the children read they re-

ceived a ticket. At the end of the summer they used the

tickets to buy prizes for all their hard work.

Community Partnerships We strive to build strong relationships with different

businesses, organizations, and civic groups to offer a

wide variety of programs and services for our pa-

trons. In 2016 we partnered with the Kansas Humani-

ties Council to bring in guest speakers to teach our

patrons the art of quilting and writing. We also

worked with USD 445 to host a Kansas author, Jef-

ferson Knapp, for the 4th grade classes of Communi-

ty Elementary. Our Children’s librarian visited the

Jerry Hamm Early Learning Center, Holy Name

Catholic School, and other preschools throughout the

year to offer storytimes. We received sponsorships

from several community businesses and the help of

the City of Coffeyville to install our StoryWalk at

LeClere Park. All of these partnerships allow us to

offer a wide assortment of programs and we thank all

those businesses, organizations, and individuals who

helped the library in 2016.

Storywalk @ LeClere Park

The library installed a temporary Storywalk at

LeClere Park during the summer of 2016. With

the cooperation of the City of Coffeyville and

several community sponsors, the library was

able to combine a love of reading and living a

healthy lifestyle. During the months of June and

July people could utilize the walking path at the

park and read two different stories. Catching the

Moon, the story of a little girl’s dream to be-

come a professional baseball player and Olym-

pig!, the encouraging story of a resilient pig

trying to win an Olympic gold medal. The li-

brary’s first Storywalk was a huge success and

we look forward to offering other Storywalks in

the future.

Employee Recognition

The library had two employees cele-

brate 30 years of service. Both Elaine

Wylie and Cindy Powell started work-

ing at the library in 1986. We celebrated

this milestone with a reception and cake

in July 2016. Miss Cindy retired later

that year and left us with this message.

“I feel privileged to have been a part of

Coffeyville Public Library and want to

say thank you to all my coworkers and

supervisors thru the years and to the

thousands of patrons both young and

old, that have crossed my path.“ —

Cindy Powell

We thank both of these ladies for the

awesome work they have provided to

the citizens of Coffeyville over the last

30 years!
