Patanjali“When you are inspired by some

great purpose, some extraordinary project, all your thoughts break their bonds; your mind transcends limitations, your consciousness expands in every direction, and you find yourself in a new, great and wonderful world. Dormant forces, faculties and talents become alive, and you discover yourself more than you ever dream yourself to be.”**

Patanjali* *The author of Yoga Sutras. ** Wisdom of the Ages, Wayne W.

Dyer, Harper Collins Publishers, c. 1998

Loss and GainMessage:Animation #1: I trust you are aware that

change is an inevitable part of our society today.

Animation #2: Obviously, change has two components: the lost and the gained.

Animation #3: For example, we make a decision to take a vacation to a nice climate, like Hawaii.

Animation #4: In order to take that trip, we must make many preparations and arrangements for the transportation, housing, and so forth.

Animation #5: After these preparations are made, we have to depart from our familiar and comfortable home, in order to get to our destination.

Animation #6: So, without hard work, we cannot get to our destination in Hawaii.

Adjustments to live in comfort and balance

I feel that we, as individuals, have to learn to evaluate these gains and losses and try to make a balance between them. In other words, we need to learn to make constant adjustment in order to live in comfort and balance.

Loss and Gain in This ClassAnimation #1: I trust that, in the past, you were used to

going to a classroom and being comfortable listening and hearing the lecture directly from your instructor. Indeed, this is the way I am used to, and I felt comfortable for many years. This comfort level and familiarity is the loss I was talking about earlier.

Animation #2: I feel that, by changing from a classroom lecture format to Web-based teaching, the human interaction will diminish. However, we can be creative in continuing to communicate as classmates and instructors via e-mail and the learning management system with the hope of keeping this gap closed as much as possible.

Animation #3: Also, on the positive side, technology has advanced in such a way that you can learn from a far distance, from the comfort of your home, and according to the flexibility of your time. This is the gain that I was talking about earlier.

Work TogetherAnimation 1: So, in order to find balance

between these changes, we have to work together as teacher and student to make this transition as smooth as possible.

Animation 2: From my end, I will be available to answer any questions, to do any corrections as necessary and needed to make this transition as smooth as possible.

Animation 3: From your end, I expect to see willingness for this new format of teaching. I trust if you put your effort and energy into this course, you will do very well. I hope this course will prepare you for your future education, especially at the master’s level.

Characteristics #1Animation 1: On the next page, you will see

some characteristics that you may need to focus on in order to do well in this course. Intentionally, no particular order and format was used to list these characteristics. Please format and order them according to your needs. At the end of the list, you may add other attributes that are meaningful to you.

Animation 2: During the course, you may want to go back to the list and make changes to the order as necessary. Also, for those of you who may find the course boring, and those of you who may not know the meaning of some of these characteristics, it is a good opportunity to pick one that you want to know more about, study it and master it, and teach it later.

Different expectationsPlease remember that there

are many students in this course, and each one of you is unique. Each of you has different expectations and limitations. To bring that gap together is the challenge that I am facing. I appreciate your assistance in this matter.
