The Czechoslovak 'First Republic' (1918-1938) created the myth of the Legion, and Mr. Bradley's article has a great value in attempting to abolish this myth. But I feel that in doing so he goes to the other extreme and takes from the Legion as a whole and from the individual legionnaires the merits which were undoubtedly theirs: the national ideal, the will to fight for their future independent and free State and the will to build this State. The almost general enthusiasm and selfless efforts of Czechs and Slovaks in the post-9gI8 years, with which they managed to build out of practically nothing an exceedingly successful political and economic unit amidst chaotic conditions on one side (e.g. in Germany and Hungary) and indifferent tiredness on the other (e.g. in France), prove, it seems, that the ideals which inspired them were healthy and valid. These ideals were not only present in the Czech Legion in Russia, but they were its motive force.

Mr. Bradley seems to have been influenced by the material he mainly used for the formulation of his theses. In the first section of his article he critically evaluates and quite rightly rejects as biased and unrelable both the Czech 'pro-Legion' myth- ology and the Communist 'anti-Legion' literature. But the latter seems to have penetrated his scholar's defences. From my own experience I know how difficult it is to resist the sheer mass of Communist literature with its consistency of the propaganda line and its sedulous misuse of material and facts. Training and habits of work prevent the non-Communist scholar accepting uncritically the point of view put forward by Communist writers and commentators; but their ways of seeing and thinking may manage to seep through imperceptibly and affect the consistent effectiveness of his critical faculties unless he is fully aware of this danger.

A SIXTH LIST OF SOVIET STATISTICAL ABSTRACTS

As a continuation of the lists appearing in earlier issues of Soviet Studies, this year's register adds 51 new statistical abstracts, and comprises entries in Knizhnaya letopis up to no. 40, I963 inclusive. The most important addition was, no doubt, the report of the I959 census, in one summary volume and 15 Republican volumes (all except the Lithuanian published in Moscow). The detailed territorial coverage of at least one general abstract per oblast (or corresponding ASSR or krai) has hardly been supplemented by the year's appearances. There is still no handbook on Kaliningrad,1 Kamchatka or Yakutia in the Russian Federation and there are only three additions- against one last year-for oblasts in other Republics. Many oblasts which made an early issue have, however, brought their abstract up to date: since I960 there have been new editions for 29 regions of the RSFSR, for four oblasts of the Ukraine and for the Abkhaz ASSR in Georgia. Most of the Republican handbooks now cover the year I96I: four of them (the RSFSR, Ukraine, Georgia and Kirgizia) are sub- titled ezhegodnik rather than sbornik, with the implication of future annual revision. Only Armenia, Azerbaidzhan and Estonia are not so in line, while the RSFSR and Latvia have kratkiye sborniki already providing data on I962.

Apart from trade, foreign and domestic, and the annual collections of publishing statistics, abstracts on particular sectors are now very rare (one on secondary technical education was the novelty this year) and reliance must be placed upon the annual general series Narodnoye khozyaistvo SSSR. This year's issue was late in appearing and

1 Mr. Sergius Yakobsen, Chief, Slavic and Central European Division, Library of Congress, points out that a booklet (36 p.) of Tsifry ifakty has just been published on Kaliningrad oblast (Knizhnaya letopis no. 36); this is not a statistical abstract proper, but it goes some way towards filling the gap.
