Welcome back, everyone! Amazingly, summer has drawn to a close! Autumn is now upon us, and it is time to reignite our endeavors with the CCREA.

Thanks to all of you who made our spring luncheon such a huge success. Our sincere gratitude goes to members of the executive committee, who handled all the aspects of

our luncheon. This includes registration, introducing speakers, photography, donating and assembling raffle baskets, as well as calling out the numbers of the winners of the raffle and delivering prizes to the win-ners. Thank you to all members who attended the luncheon, nominated students for our random scholarships, and purchased tickets to help CCREA provide scholarships to worthy students.

At our spring luncheon, it was refreshing to hear Senator Donald Norcross continue to state and carry out his support for educators. NJEA President, Wendell Steinhauer, NJREA President, Pat Provnick, and CCCEA President, Cathy Howley, stated emphatically that we educators need to remain committed to amending our state constitution with a requirement that quarterly pension monies are paid, thereby reducing the deficit. With this result in mind, many of our members have spent their summer making phone calls to members, knocking on doors, and speaking to voters about the benefits of this amendment. Several members also visited Trenton to voice solidarity with legislators who supported adding this amendment to November's ballot. The Assembly had already voted to support our educators. However, the Senate failed to even raise the issue of adding the amendment on the November ballot. We should note that Senator Stephen Sweeney, at the earlier NJEA Legislative Conference, had promised educators he would push to include the amendment on the ballot. This did not happen.

Of course, we feel discouraged. But we cannot afford to be discouraged. We have a presidential election in November. Your vote is essential! Also, primary elections will be held in 2017, and we need to let our legislators know that if they don’t support educators, then educators cannot support them in their reelection bids.

We must also be diligent about protecting our health benefits. Thanks to all of you who called the governor’s office to let him know that another member needs to be added to the School Employee Health Commission to protect our health benefits. Despite recent setbacks, we are looking forward to a positive outcome for our pension fund and our health benefits in the year ahead. Members, please be ready to help us!

CONSTITUTION UPDATE Betty Procopio, Chairman

The Constitution Committee members – Betty Procopio, Diana Lindner, Gary Milby, Marge Jackson, Dianne Papadinec, Pat Legge and Sue Ronca – have worked on the CCREA constitution for the past few years.

The constitution was submitted to NJREA in Trenton in April 2016. Suggestions from NJREA were given and included in this final copy of our constitution.

The final copy will be presented to the CCREA membership for approval.

GOVERNMENT RELATIONS Dorothy Blindenbacher & Susan Ronca

As you already know, the constitutional amendment to require fiscally responsible pension payments by the state will not be on the ballot in November. Senate President Steve Sweeney broke his promise to NJEA members and other public employees by not posting the resolution, SCR-2, by August 8.

NJEA is not deterred by this outcome, but very disappointed. Our membership is more than 200,000 strong and we will overcome this setback. All of us will need to work together to eventually get the constitutional amendment on pension funding on the ballot next year or shortly thereafter.

Even though the Senate did not post and pass the constitutional resolution, we should thank Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto and the 50 Assembly men and women who kept their promise and supported ACR-109, the pension funding resolution. You can e-mail all 50 of them at one time by visiting www.voteNJpension.org/take action.

Governor Christie is at it again! This time, his attack is aimed at the medical benefits of retirees. He wants to push all eligible retirees into a Medicare Advantage program by bypassing the School Employees Health Benefit Plan (SEHBP) Design Committee and putting it to a vote through the SEHBP Commission. The governor wants the Commission to vote on this now because he currently holds a majority. There is a union representative vacancy that needs to be filled. It has been vacant for over a year due to a member's death. The governor refuses to appoint a replacement! He has the names which were provided to him by NJEA, but he does not want to do his job and fill the vacancy.

Please visit NJEA.org for updates on current issues affecting NJEA/NJREA members.

A SPECIAL THANKS TO CONSTITUTION COMMITTEE

Gary Milby, Past President

As past president of CCREA, I wanted to take this opportunity to publicly thank Betty Procopio for her tireless work in completing a revision of our CCREA Constitution. Each county had been asked by NJREA to review and revise their individual constitutions to reflect those changes which had been made to the NJREA Constitution. This process began a few years ago and along with the Constitution Committee members, we were able, under the direction of Betty, to make those necessary changes to comply with the state association's constitution. I wanted to express my appreciation to Betty for her continued leadership and her willingness to listen and then record those revisions which the committee felt were necessary. Today we have a newly revised CCREA Constitution, which will soon be presented to the membership for their approval. Again, many thanks to Betty and also the committee for completing this formidable task.

Attention: Funding of CCREA Scholarship Award:

One of our most valued projects is raising funds for 4 $1000 scholarships that are awarded to

eligible high school and college students in order for them to continue their academic studies to-

wards a degree in higher education. Yet, we are experiencing a financial shortage in meeting this

year’s goal. Since becoming unified with the NJREA, members have been asked to write a

separate check to fund our scholarships. During this transition, we have lagged behind in our

contributions, thereby raising the possibility of limiting the number of these scholarships.

Therefore, we are asking all members to please consider making a donation so that we can continue our mission of serving the educational needs of our county’s communities. Thank you for your generosity and for your continued support.
