An Integrated Education

When you are practicing preventive medicine, you make sure that ALL facets of the person’s well-being are covered

In educating a child, it is very important to remember all the ingredients for success - you can’t NOT educate one part and expect the rest to turn out OK

Page 7: A Prescription for Wellness and a Happy, Healthy Life Physical Education and the Brookings School Program

So, what is our program all

about?

Page 8: A Prescription for Wellness and a Happy, Healthy Life Physical Education and the Brookings School Program

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

We believe that physical education should enable students to be efficient, effective, knowledgeable movers for

their lifetime.

Page 9: A Prescription for Wellness and a Happy, Healthy Life Physical Education and the Brookings School Program

HAS learned skills necessary to perform a variety of physical activities Current research suggests that if children do

not reach a degree of competence and confidence in fundamental movement skills by the sixth grade, they will not engage in regular physical activity or sports for the rest of their lives.

IS physically fit

The Surgeon General has declared that “childhood obesity is at epidemic levels in the United States.”

Only 25% of children and young people participate in any type of daily physical activity that will lead to an active and healthy adult lifestyle.

Page 11: A Prescription for Wellness and a Happy, Healthy Life Physical Education and the Brookings School Program

DOES participate regularly in physical activity Physical education classes for middle schoolers

in California provided students a total of only 25 minutes of vigorous activity per week.

A study of third and fourth graders showed engagement in vigorous physical activity only occurring 36% of the class time.

60% of Americans are not regularly active and 25% are not active at all.

KNOWS the implications of and the benefits from involvement in physical activities

Many of us recognize that when one part of us is not “well,” nothing seems to flow in our lives.

Many of us also recognize that when we are at our best we are active, alert, challenged, and ready to meet the world .

Page 13: A Prescription for Wellness and a Happy, Healthy Life Physical Education and the Brookings School Program

VALUES physical activity and its contributions to a healthy lifestyle

The Center for Disease Control warns that obesity accounts for more than 300,000 premature deaths, which is second only to tobacco as a cause of mortality.

People value their life, as well as the lives of those around them.

What our students will know includes– benefits of regular participation in physical

activity– that wellness involves more than being

physically fit– that participating in regular physical activity

can lead to opportunities for enjoyment, self-expression and better communication with those in their world
